Tis true jolly, when I'd see there was only a bit left at the bottom I think 'may as well finish that off then'. Only recently have I tried not to finish the entire bottle off, and not always succeeded!

I think that's why wine boxes are good for a bit of cheap plonk of an evening. Makes it a lot easier to have just the couple of glasses and leave it at that than be faced with a bottle that you might as well finish.

Er, no, then you're faced with a 3 litre wine box you may as well finish

I think the perception of saying i had a 'bottle of wine' is in fact not really that much as its only probably 3 glasses which is hardly excessive. I know many people young and old which open up a bottle a night and enjoy with dinner and there after but wouldn't say they have a problem.

that is a reasonable argument untill they decide not to have a bottle and cant sleep sweat all night and get up feeling like shit

I have more to say on this than I have time to write right now.

Some people can cut down and control their drinking but for others total abstinence is the only way. It's a cliche but one day at a time is the most successful method. I know people who haven't drunk for years who still deal with it that way. And if you lapse, don't beat yourself up about it, just start again. Call it pressing the reset button.

PM - tolerance does quicky fall. The good (or bad) news is that it can be built up again just as quickly.

I've cut down hugley this year, and had a couple of 10 day booze free-periods. I've then kidded myself that I can go back to having 1 beer or a couple of glasses of wine (whereas in the past I would have though what's the point in having 1) but it doesn't stay at that number long.

The hot weather and the World Cup, stresses at work, none of these things help. You have to break to habit and the associations. Stop seeing social activities as an opportunity to drink and a chance to actually socialise. I went to a wedding and stayed sober for the first time in years last weekend, enjoyed it so much better. After a while it actually gets harder to have a drink than to not have one.

1 bottle of wine is not 3 glasses. It is three large pub glasses but that is a silly way of measuring, encouraging people to spend more.

I always end up having to finish the bottle and probably whatever else is in the house. That's why I only ever buy drink in small quantities. The day I went to the wine warehouse was a big mistake...

As I am reminded by my other half, a bottle of red wine is roughly the equivalent of 10 units of alcohol, hence drinking one every day would be 70 units a week, even 2/3 of a bottle seven days a week is over 46 units a week.

The bizarre thing is there isnt a momenty during the day when I even fancy a cigarette, and if I don't have a drink I don't need a ciggy either, but, open a bottle of wine and after the first glass i crave ciggies and end up having a couple. So essentially, I only smoke maybe two a day tops and sometimes none, and i don't miss it, yet could I have just a glass of wine and no ciggy? No is the answer.

I agree, however they do serve as a sort of barometer against laid down guidelines about acceptable levels of alcoholic intake and when I work out my intake, it's way over the acceptable level.

Agreed, but you can achieve this on a smaller scale. For example, last Friday everytime I was asked if I wanted a glass of wine or a berr I said "not just yet." I was putting off having the first drink to limit the amount I might have. In the end I didn't have one at all.

If you drank Guinness Smurph you might find it easier to limit the intake.

I always manage to squeeze in 5 or 6 pints of Guiness when I go out snookering. The one good thing about wine is it doesn't come by the pint!

I think as a general rule 1 bottle is 6 units (125ml glasses) although this varies with strength. I can't agree with Maz that 'units are for wimps' if only because they give an idea about exactly how much alcohol (and consequent liver etc damage) you might really be doing.
