Chocky has been texting me all morning about Curb your Enthusiasm, I think I managed to convert him after suggesting he watch the restaurant opening episode, the car wash c**t! Anyone seen "Killer Eyes" in series three? "You my caucasian"?

I am surprised you didnt like it. It's generally revered as being the funniest, most original comedy in a long time. Maybe you ought to stick to Last of the Summer Wine and 2.4 Children

Brilliant stuff. Saw the first two series on the Beeb, but haven't managed to catch any of series 3, thanks to E4's rather irratic scheduling. Might pick it up on DVD as it's only 17.99 on Play. Hmmmm...

It's just full of ridiculous "I've got so many problems because I'm American" issues. It's like watching paint dry.

Will Ferrell over that bloke anytime

A little xenophobic in your summary! Best summed up here:

"Curb Your Enthusiasm proves how seemingly trivial details of one's day-to-day life--a trip to the movies, a phone call, a visit from some trick-or-treaters-- can precipitate a "Murphy's Law" chain of misfortune to hilarious effect. Like George Costanza in Seinfeld, the protagonist of Curb Your Enthusiasm has a knack for getting himself into uncomfortable situations that end up alienating him from peers and acquaintances. To keep the narrative fresh and spontaneous, Curb Your Enthusiasm is shot without a script; the cast is given scene outlines and often improvise lines as they go. The result is an unpredictable format that's unlike anything else on TV."

In short, the fact he is American has nothing whatsoever to do with it. Everybody in life from time to time gets themselves in awkward situations. Larry David just magnifies that and weaves seemingly unrelated incidents together in a clever and innovative way.

I wouldn't say xenophobic.

What I'm trying to say is that the situations are very much in the 'I'm in therapy' mould. There are undertones of self-obsession that I find irritating rather than humourous.

Al, I'm surprised you're watching a comedy (and standing up for it) on the basis of critical acclaim. I thought you didn't like things that are hyped up.

I wasnt on the critical acclaim bandwagon at the time it came out. They were on series four or five (i.e. three or four years into the show) before I had even heard of it. And it's not hyped up, because you only need to hype something up that isn't as good as it claims to be. Curb your Enthusiasm. I have learnt, long after the event, is a very clever and innovative show. It's purely because it's put on our screens at such stupid hours that I didnt stumble across it before I did.

That's the one! The bit where Larry is helping him write the lyrics to that rap. Something about "or I'll nut in your eye". Very funny.

Considering he sold the rights to Seinfeld for $240m I'm amazed he even bothered writing anything else. And to write something so clever and different is a breath of fresh air.

I didn't know about the $240m.

I heard a very prescient statement once that American comedy (at its best) is always about winners whereas English comedy, at its best, is always about losers.

CYE certainly fits in here. I can only think of Roseanne, and mebbe Cheers where its not been the case in the US...

(Ready to be shot down in flames).

Good point.

Delboy, Basil Fawlty, David Brent fit that mold for a start...

Doesn't setting oneself on fire render spontanaity redundant?
