Steve Parish has already said we'd keep the existing seating deck of the Old Stand as the lower tier going forward. Said he wanted to keep fans close as they are currently. Presumably so we wouldn't have a vast gap at the front from the pitch like you see at the likes of Stoke or the Amex.

The existing Main Stand structure (minus roof and pillars) won't be supporting anything extra. Everything new will be sited external to what is there currently. The upper tier will be sitting on about 6 or 7 floors of new restaurants and bars built completely behind the existing structure. The new roof will be either an overarching cantilever, with all the structural steel behind what is the current stand, or a goalpost structure like at Liverpool, so a huge frame across the top to hold the roof, supported by vast towers at each end.

The engineers will do the same as at Liverpool.

Benefit of leaving the old stand alone is that you don't lose capacity, whereas if you remove the old stand and replace it with a lower tier of the same rake etc, then there would be a lower capacity due to having to build to current (ie modern) regs - larger legroom, wider aisles, and have disabled viewing platforms which eat up capacity.

There will of course be disabled sections in the new upper tier (there has to be)

I'm assuming SP is talking about just retaining the Paddock seating, rather than the entire deck. Surely we wouldn't incorporate about 20 rows of wooden steps and supporting beams into a multi million pound new build?

Thanks for the link. I like the old Selhurst Park shots and the picture of the Chelsea team posing by their (mini)bus in the early 70's. How times have changed.

Thanks for the link. Fascinating to see the frostbound pitch framed inbetween the old Whitehorse Lane and Park Road terracing with large areas of grass sloping above them - I have heard many a tale of people sliding down when the banks got muddy or slippery!

The caption is quite obviously wrong though as there was already a two tiered terracing on the Whitehorse and it extended round to make the new Arthur Wait Stand, which was completed in time for our first match in Division One after promotion in 1969 - scary to think we will be celebrating 50 years of the ‘New Stand’ as we always used to call it from my first visit in 1970 until probably the early 90’s when it first became all seated after the Taylor Report.

Don’t think the atmosphere was ever quite the same after that, as the terracing always lent itself to groups of fans joining up and making more noise at the bigger games.

Your post has just got me thinking CP.

Rail seating, or safe standing as it is also known is well on the way, it is at Celtic, and soon, Shrewsbury. Give it a couple more seasons, and I reckon the green light will be well and truly on.

Everyone is pretty much of the same mind that when rail standing is allowed at Selhurst, the place to have it would be the Holmesdale Lower.

Presumably because this is for the last 20 years the main noisy part of Selhurst, but also, where standing occurs the most.

However in the late 80's it was very much the Arthur Wait Enclosure where the young would go for standing and being noisy, and boy was it noisy under that roof, the acoustics were superb, and the noise spread across the whole length of the pitch.

I still believe that a full and noisy Arthur Wait Enclosure beats the Holmesdale Lower (even with the HF) for noise at most games at a ratio of x2.

If I was the owner and was looking to introduce an area of safe standing, I would put it in the old Arthur Wait Enclosure space in a heartbeat over the Holmesdale Lower.

It would mean the seating area at the back would have a concourse of the correct size again, and just imagine the racket!

It would also mean the away section would have a mixture of safe standing and seating.

Plus the general rake (angle) of the seats at the back works in tandem with standing at the front, it was how the stand was originally designed - of course that would require some reprofiling back to how the stand was originally

It is pretty obvious the Arthur Wait Stand is never going to be replaced, get it back to as close as it used to be, and it'd be miles better.

Leave the Holmesdale as a modern seating stand, it works fine as such.

I would guess that photo was taken after or before the abandoned Blackpool game in early December 1968. In other pictures posted elsewhere from the same game you can see the superstructure of the stand towards Holmesdale end of what was the Park Rd Terrace. If you look closely at the photo you can just see the plywood fence that was erected to keep supporters and plant/materials apart, I doubt you would get away with construction of such a large stand while the terrace underneath was still in use

The Arthur was named after the legendary Arthur Wait soon after it was completed. However as you say for many years a lot of fans called it the new stand.

The one of Selhurst near the bottom dated to the early 70s is wrongly dated because the AW was built by then. Looking at the cranes there it's probably around 1968-69.

Great shots all of them.

As you say named after Arthur Wait when officially opened but changed to New Stand by his successor Ray Bloye it seems (that's when my season ticket booklet cover there changed names!)
