It's weird. As mentioned here a few times, but never in a couple of interviews I've heard from SP about this, rules on non-EU players are entirely the FA and UK government decisions. I'd be interested to hear him properly interviewed about it.

Because the FA have never been able to specify a minimum number of British players in a squad due to EU freedom of movement. The closest they could get is homegrown. Of course that had just made the clubs stock the academies with young europeans of got lots of Brazilians to get an Italian passport.

Not saying FA will change the rules but they could. It’s interestinf as England are finally producing loads of good young players. This can be seen by the success of the youth teams at international level. Very few get a look in, in the premier league. It even took a massive injury crisis for our own youngster to get a chance.
