In fact, PVA made the chance Jimmy inexplicably missed, produced a great delivery that Kelly should have buried a header from AND made the chance Batshuyai should have scored from. He really did have a great second half! Made 3 huge chances.

He then played a part in our goal.

That's a lot more than 1 good run!

I don't think you can afford to have two players like that - Meyer isn't that type of player to track back and make an impression defensively, which is why I think he's best suited to being used as a sub ( until he improves that part of his game or adapts physically to the Premier League).
Although, when Meyer and Zaha play, they're excellent together and really cause problems?

I guess that is the crux of the Roy question.

Do we primarily worry about the opposition, or give the opposition something to worry about?

Seems like when let of the leash, we dominated a decent West Ham side.

Guaita 5 Some decent saves, but also gave away the pen - if you come off the line, you have to get the ball and he didn't

PVA 7 Partially at fault for goal, although the question would have been whether he could have tackled/blocked Antonio from scoring had Guaita not rushed out. We saw in the 2nd half how much better he is at attacking. Genuine quality on the ball, and good at linking up with others. Love him. Play to his strengths

Sakho 7 The guy is class. Won more headers than usual as well.
Kelly 7 Rock solid. Justified Roy's confidence in him
AWB 7 Solid tackling and looking very comfortable on the ball

Schlupp 8 MOM Thought he was the player I thought he could be if he applied himself in centre midfield. He's not the best technically but he should be able to cover the ground and make important contributions with his pace and power off the ball and in a defensive capacity as well as in an attacking mode. For the first time he did this, and for that reason, as well as the stick I have given him in recent weeks, he deserves the MOM vote for much better application. Well done Jeff.
Milivojevic 4 Thought he was very quiet and disappointing.
McArthur 7 People are giving him poor ratings because of the miss but he was all-action and outshone the captain by some way.

Zaha 8 Worked hard getting up and down. Scored with persistence and I particularly liked the effort a few minutes later where he used his pace to get there and get the shot off - that was an excellent save from the keeper because he must have seen it late. Still want him defending less though (more about that later)

Benteke 6 Didn't win as many headers as normal, probably should have scored, but totally isolated in the 4-3-3 so I have given him a rating that gives him the benefit of the doubt.

Townsend 4 I felt he was very poor. Little of his usual engine, and simply not involved enough. Yes, a lot of the attacks were down the left hand side, but he didn't do enough and he should have been hooked.

Subs:

Batshuayi 6 Didn't really do much. People will say he was a big improvement on Benteke but he missed a difficult opportunity on his left foot because he had to take it early and although he looks more exciting because of increased mobility he rarely threatened apart from that.

Meyer 7 Technical ability that the other central midfielders at the club could only dream of having.

Hodgson 4 I've boosted his score for the early sub, but actually they were the wrong changes. The 4-3-3 formation at home to West Ham isolated Benteke. Townsend didn't get into the game in an attacking sense or defensively. Benteke was on his own because Wilf is hugging the touchline. The balance is just wrong for a winnable home game. Instead Roy should have started 4-4-2, and certainly he should have kept Benteke on and partnered him with Batshuayi when 1-0 down early in the 2nd half or at half time. It's just typical negative Roy. Meyer should also be used in home games. The manager needs to have a long hard look at our home form and how he sets the team up. Away from home we are fine. There's so much space for Zaha to exploit and it makes sense to go 4-3-3. But for 17 games out of 19 at home we should be playing 4-4-2 with Max Meyer in centre mid.
And there's no excuse because we have the personnel to do it.

Really? They've got a plethora of talent that you could see when they controlled the midfield in the first half.

Diop, Fredericks, Antionio, Cresswell as well as Anderson would be players I'd love at Palace.

One of the main reasons Benteke is isolated is because he is so static. Bringing on a mobile forward in Bats changed the game hugely. The only way to use benteke effectively is seemingly to play wingers who can cross to his head. This really isn’t our style anymore. We pass the ball out from the back, mainly through Sakho and luka, trying to play through teams. A huge change from our defensive, counter attacking style of recent years. Benteke simply doesn’t make the type of runs that we need in this style.

To my mind wilf is an attacking wide player, not a striker. He looks best wife left, drive in onto his right foot or getting to the byline and cutting it back (rather than putting in a cross for a header. His link play is excellent when he has others on his wavelength. RLC and Mayer have made him come alive.

I’d keep benteke on the bench to use if we need to mix it up, start with bats and make room for Mayer in front of a holding two, rather than reset to an archaic 442 where we could be overrun in the centre.

If he’s won’t do that it’s even less likely he will go with the Glaziers Fan plan of 442 with Meyer in a central two.

Spot on analysis. Particularly at Selhurst this is the way forward. Teesdale, you know your stuff.

If his best wife left that might explain why he’s been looking a bit fed up lately.
