Southgate is also effectively using Maguire at the back post routine a fair amount, whereas our alternative was Andy Thorn at the near post. Maybe we shall see this variation on Wednesday!

Great guy and great player but his departure was far, far worse than Gareths who allegedly gave Salako a clump for not trying hard enough in 95
Anyone who has clumped Salako goes right up in my estimation. Although i bet his poor wife suffered the consequences that night.
Southgate was a decent pro and has handled himself very well thus far with the England job. But its quite easy when things are going well. Worst job in the World when things go wrong.

Although it is good news that England are in semi finals it still seems bit surreal how we have got to this stage

Tunisia Last minute winner

Panoma Well they are poor

Belgium Lost - 2 teams playing back up players

Columbia Penalties

Sweden They offered nothing

You can only beat the teams your drawn against , but we have been extremely fortunate having drawn the opposition above .

I have been impressed by the way southgate has presented himself and managed the young team. The reality is however (and whisper it) the excitement and fervour far outweighs the actual achievement thus far. It's great though because we have managed to mess up easier games and it would take a proper misery not to be loving this world cup from an england perspective.

We need to beat a top side in a knock out game for us to be really confident this isn't just a wales style run..

Please explain how Southgate's performance has been mediocre. You are only as good as your last game as a manager and Southgate has performed brilliantly.
Again, no one has said Southgate's performance has been mediocre. He has done a great job in this tournament. You can be an ok manager (mediocre seems a bit harsh), but have a great tournament. See Coleman and Wales in 2016 as an example, although Coleman also did great in qualifying to be fair to him. Being an international manager obviously requires very different skills, but I'm not sure the majority of Palace fans would have been happy with Southgate or Martinez being appointed here prior to this WC.

I'm don't think folk are trying to knock Gareth, just discussing things. Gareth deserves huge credit, particularly for his decision to rest players against Belgium which the media would have crucified him for had we lost to Colombia, but which was actually a great decision that I think will enable us to reach (and perhaps win) the final. Using a system that seems to suit the squad feels quite fresh for an England manager too!

Anyone who was underwhelmed at his appointment was right to be so. We had nothing but a fairly non existant track record to go on. It would have been difficult at the time to think that he would bring much to the 'table'.

What he has brought (in hindsight) in actual fact seems a perfect blend.

Tournament experience

You can only beat the teams your drawn against , but we have been extremely fortunate having drawn the opposition above .
Hold on its not Englands fault that the so called big boys are poor this time around.

Holland and Italy failed to qualify.

Sweden lets not forget beat both France and Italy in qualification which would suggest this is not a poor Swedish team, more likely England played very well and Sweden could not match us. Therefore bearing in mind they beat France on route to Russia, should England reach the final and face France we will be in with a chance.

Germany & Argentina both poor and lets not forget the Argies only just qualified. Brazil often a bigger reputation than their team is and this time no different, one superstar player who wanted to focus on his acting rather than his football.

Is it really a surprise when you take a step back the four semi finalists are who they are ? I don't think England are lucky to be where they are, as has been said already Gareth has prepared very well, he has in a short time changed the make up of the team and installed a positive ethos in the whole set up. He has made some tough decisions, but has also made the whole set up more media savvy and at the same time eased a lot of the pressure from the players, who are playing without fear.

Finally Gareth took a lot of stick from some Palace fans over the academy issue and while I can see where those giving the stick were coming from he had to make some tough calls which were going to upset people, but he did not fudge it. We now have won two World Championships at junior levels and there is a much better flow between the young England sides and the senior team, which must provide a real opportunity for an exciting future for England. If we do not win this year, the 2020 Euros and 2022 World cup must be a real possibility.

Last but not least and this is important the team is sprinkled with players from a broader selection of Premier league clubs which gives every English player (and there is sadly too few of them in the premier league at present) hope that even if the play for Bournemouth, Palace, Leicester or Watford you have a chance of breaking into the squad. This means greater competition for places which will improve the level of performance.

If we do win the 2018 World Cup it will not be luck, but because we are well prepared and have a good team, maybe not blessed with superstars, but a real play for each other and talented squad

[QUOTE=Stan the man;14289168]Mediocre at best at Boro. Their fans dont rate him. Since then failed to get a job elsewhere, scurried off to the FA with the Old Boys network there. Again underwhelming. When has he last managed a high pressure game? 2009 with Boro in their final dismal Prem season, for which he was sacked.

Despite the press' praise for coming across as 'studious and thoughtful', all i see is the usual England copying this years model, and instead of the Tika-Take fixation of a decade or so ago, are now aping Pep's model. It's this zeitgeist chasing that has left England without it's own true footballing identiy. Always chasing the flash model of what is in reality 2 or more years ago. We should have taken inspiration from that Leicester title winning side and based our game on that, given it gets somewhat limited players in a team playing above the sum of it's parts, but instead are trying to play a pass out the back possession game, with sod all creative midfielders.

Be delighted to be proven wrong, but can see England wilting again in the first high pressure game. Any team will just play a high press and break up any attempts at possession in our defensive third. Under the pressure the players will revet to the usual hot potato routine, and Southgate will be scratching his beard trying to look all sage on the touchline to no effect.

And re Palace, when has he shown us any affection since leaving? He doesnt have to, it's his choice. But i dont recall him ever standing by the club during our two admin eras, when players with far more fleeting Palace careers and loyalty did so, or ever being at key games or enjoying our successes since then. Again, his choice, but it cuts both ways.[/QUOTE

The words egg and face come to mind.

I very much hope that, if ITV make the mistake of using Roy Keane as a summariser for tomorrow night's game, all you social media types send a clip of him stamping on Southgate in that FA Cup semi-final viral ...

He has done a great job of managing the squad. I guess that makes him a good manager.

Not a perfect blend but a start , the key question is now can he learn from his mistakes. For example, A plan is not enough , and b and c plan was needed.
