Italy's populist rulers have lent vocal and technological support to the yellow vest movement after eight weeks of riots in France.

"I support honest citizens who protest against a president who governs against his own people," Italian deputy prime minister Matteo Salvini said on Monday (7 January), referring to French president Emmanuel Macron.

Luigi Di Maio ( offered yellow vest leaders his party's IT platform to organise events

"Yellow vests, do not weaken!", Luigi di Maio, Italy's other deputy prime minister, added.

Di Maio, from the Five Star Movement (5MS) party in Italy's ruling coalition, also offered yellow vest leaders the use of his party's IT platform, called Rousseau, to help organise future events in France.

Macron has pitted himself against Salvini as the head of a liberal pro-EU front against the Italian's anti-EU league in the coming European Parliament (EP) elections.

The French president, a former investment banker, is also a bogeyman for 5MS-type populism, with Di Maio, on Monday, ramming the idea home.

Macron represented "the interests of the elites, those who live off privilege, no longer those of the people," Di Maio said on his blog.

"A new Europe is being born. That of the 'yellow vests', that of movements, that of direct democracy. It's a tough battle that we can win together," Di Maio added.

The Rousseau IT platform is designed to help organise events on the ground, select candidates, and draft electoral programmes in what could help transform the French yellow vest movement into a political party.

Another interesting point is the UK electorate have a strong legal case for UK, MEP's representation and a vote in the upcoming EU elections , If May's deal or any other deal is agreed that still leaves Brussels deciding UK policy , Laws , Export Tariffs , Trade agreements etc.

No we don't. We voted to leave without any details of what terms we would leave on: we left that to Parliament. If Parliament backs May's deal, then we have signed up to leaving on that basis. We would have no legal case for continuing representation in the EU Parliament.

bizarre thinking that a protest movement would want to align itself with a disparate bunch of Italian nutters. I expect this is more posturing from the Italian govt then anything else.

Why do you approvingly quote a government who is a coalition with the far right?

It is interesting, the era of the EU liberal does seem to be faltering. Merkel's domination of both Germany and the EU seems to be on the wane. Some of big players want her to go now not in 2021. The French seem to be falling out of love with Macron.

Many of the other countries are moving away from the EU's enforced liberalism. The Italians seem to particularly keen to tell Macron to feck off. This could well result in a sea change in the EU's relentless march towards a liberalist driven federalist EU state. Even bringing their policies closer to those of the UK.

The May elections could well be the start of this. It would be a shame to leave now if the EU does significantly change. Still, the die is cast now.

The EU will never be a comfort zone of the populist right, however much racey hopes it will.

The problem with the separate Politics forum is that you risk missing genius like this

It's more nuanced than that, but neoliberalism has a strong foothold all over Europe, especially in the UK.

Broadly I agree. The introduction of the single market strengthened the hand of the multinationals and weakened workers and government. It's been a boon for tax avoidence and a useful tool for multinationals to drive down wages by playing workers off against each other. It could have been rectified at some cost by the EU if they had ensured a higher level of workers rights. However, as predicted, it has been used most effectively by the most powerful e.g US and Japanese multinationals. One of many factors why wages have been held down.

What will happen is after more months and months of Brexit deal/no deal misery everything will come to a complete shutdown, a second referendum is called and remain are triumphant this time and at that precise moment the EU collapses.

It’s a kind of inevitable extension of monetarism as practised in the UK from the late 70s onwards, and in most capitalist democracies around that time and later. It pretty much blew up in 2008 but so many political and business figures had such a stake in it that they pumped air into its corpse - and we are where we are.

The thread title seems to suggest that we the people are electing the EU which is odd as the thread starter believes the EU are a dictatorship.

Strange times.
