One of my first Palace heroes - RIP

To be honest I thought he had already passed away. I'm pretty sure a good few years ago it was reported he was pretty sick.

A classy player. Came into his own during the 68/69 promotion season. A pleasure to see him play.

I recall his first game for us. A 3 -1 win i think, but can't remember who it was against. Cliff Jackson bamboozled the opposition defence by cutting in along the goal line instead of crossing it, which is what everyone expected him to do. It was a bit of a trademark move of his. Still remember how impressed we all were by it.

A letter from Sheila Jackson..... 21/7/2007

Hello

I am Sheila Jackson, wife of Cliff Jackson. I notice on your page that one or two people are asking about Cliff. I tried to register, but because I use Hotmail I wasn't allowed to. Perhaps you could let those people know who are asking about Cliff that he is now feeling much better. This year he has suffered five strokes, a bout of severe sudden onset pneumonia and has a heart problem. Unfortunately as a result of the strokes Cliff has lost his speech, which is very frustrating for him. But, luckily after nearly 46 years of married life together we manage to communicate very well without words.

We returned from Spain after Cliff's first stroke and are now back in what we think of as our 'home' town, Billericay in Essex. We are very lucky in that we have four fantastic grown up children and nine grandchildren, ranging in ages from 22 years to 3 years. They all support and help us tremendously.

Cliff is currently waiting to hear from a cardiology consultant about the possibility of having an intervention device fitted to his heart, which would help to make life better for him, relieving the extreme fatigue that he suffers from at the moment.

We had hoped that on the 22 December, at the invitation of the club, passed on to us by David Payne and Mel Blythe, Cliff would have been able to attend the Palace -v- Plymouth Argyle match, but unfortunately we aren't able to do that, maybe another time!

Many thanks to all the supporters who enquired about Cliff, he's feeling 'Glad All Over', looking forward to Christmas, and the future with much optimism. I know Cliff would want to say he wishes the Palace and it's fans all the very best, it was one of the best times in his footballing career.

Sincerely
Sheila Jackson
.

Seeing what he went through 11 years ago shows what a man he was battling through it until now. Rest in Peace.
Not just one of the team that got us to the First Division for the very first time he was the top scorer that season. One of Bert Heads youngsters having him at Swindon before joining us. Played the first season in the top flight but be it through injuries catching up it was a step to far but that should not ever lessen the contribution he made to our history. The gladiator salute when he scored I guess I was not the only one to copy it on the school playing field. Condolences to a his family and friends.

Sad news. One of Bert Head's Swindon old boys.
He played a big part in us winning promotion to the first division for the first time when converted to a centre forward.
RIP Cliff and sincere condolences to family and friends.
