Back into it now for the new season and we start with the opening of the new Holmesdale stand back in 1995.
There are also braces for Johnny Byrne and Jerry Murphy, a hat-trick for Dwight Gayle and, with hindsight, a key win at Huddersfield in 2000. To view the link you have to Register or Login |

September 5th - Happy "You're a disgrace to The Midlands Blues" day everybody.
5th September 1988; Birmingham City 0-6 Crystal Palace (Cannon, Thomas, Redfearn, Bright, Gray 2) That team could have gone on to be a better team than the one that won promotion the following season if they'd all stayed fit or hadn't put in transfer requests. |

September 7th 1985.
An away match at The Valley. We'd actually started OK-ish in Coppell's 2nd season so by mid-80's standards there was almost a hint of early Autumn optimism in the air and more than the usual paltry away turn-out in those days. Disinterested turnstyle operator thrusts a photocopied piece of A4 in my hand which I duly fold up and stick in my back pocket without reading. The chants from the Palace support of "What's it like to have no ground?" and "we don't want you at Selhurst!" makes me get the flyer out and re-read it. WTF!!! Seriously!? That horrible bunch of white-trash are actually going to play at OUR ground. With OUR permission apparently. Sod that. Then they even got promoted and stayed up for several seasons at Selhurst with Noades' connivance. And they won. Loads of penalties; can't remember the sequence. That match summed up the mid-80's funk that hung over football. Rock-bottom crowds and terrible decisions by chairmen/adminstrators/politicians. The only good thing that came from it was acquiring John Humphrey via some dodgy rent-arrears arrangement. |

Out of interest, where did away fans used to stand at the Valley in the 80s? Assuming they were seated still in the Jimmy Seed end, but can't think of where there was a segregated terrace.

Same stand they are now. The big terrace to the right as away fans stood facing the pitch was condemned; that was part of the reason they had to leave. That weird Subbuteo, main stand was to the left and the home end opposite.

And currently that end is harder to enter than through the Arthur turnstiles.
Dreadful congestion and stewards from hell in recent years. |

The first time I went to Charlton was about 1981-82, I remember a fenced in pen for away fans on the half way line. There were a good few of us in there and a good few in the seats. The following season we were all in the seats, Shaun Brooks scored a decent goal from just outside the box. They got a winner in the last minute, Don McAlister I think. The reason that game stands out was Kevin Mabbutt made his come back from injury, when his name was read out as substitute before kick off the Palace fans gave a great roar of approval, coming on in the 2nd half he got a great reception
