Mariners' match with London team in doubt By TRIS WYKES , The Virginian-Pilot © June 8, 2006
The status of a scheduled international exhibition soccer match between the Virginia Beach Mariners and English team Crystal Palace is uncertain, a Mariners official said Wednesday. Cindy Focke, the team's marketing director, said "it's possible Crystal Palace might not play here" on July 22, but she was unable to give details. The London-based Eagles, founded in 1905 and members of England's First Division, are scheduled to play the Los Angeles Galaxy of MLS in a an exhibition at 7 p.m. July 19 in Richmond. Paul Marstaller, the U.S. Soccer Federation's director of events, said his organization has little to do with the July 22 match, slated for the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. "U.S. Soccer doesn't play a role except to sanction the event," Marstaller said in an e-mail. The federation charges a $100 application fee and a $3,750 performance bond for U.S. teams wishing to host foreign clubs, some of which can command tens of thousands of dollars in guaranteed appearance fees. A Mariners press release issued last month to announce the Crystal Palace match is no longer on the team's Web site, and Focke said it was pulled because of the game's uncertainty. Tickets were advertised as being on sale and costing $10-$40 . "I'm not sure that a lot of tickets have been sold," Focke said. "But I'm sure people who had already bought them would get their money back." The Mariners last hosted an international exhibition in July 20, 2004, when a previous ownership group drew an announced crowd of 1,360 to see English First Division foe Nottingham Forest. Tickets for that match cost $10 if bought in advance and $14 the day of the match. http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories...5682&ran=35904 ![]() More discussion by Mariners fans on here: http://www.usldiscussions.com/cgi-bi...;f=34;t=000903

From the LA Galaxy web site.... I can find no mention of any game with Palace.... I'm open to direction.
I know for sure there was talk of this game on there a few weeks ago.

I HAVE EMAILED THE CLUB TO ASK FOR URGENT CONFIRMATION THAT THE MATCHES ARE STILL TAKING PLACE AS ORIGINALLY STATED IN THE WATFORD PLAY OFF PROGAMME (APART FROM THE FIRST MATCH BEING BROUGHT FOWARD 1 DAY) AND AWAIT THEIR URGENT RESPONSE.
AS FAR AS THE LA GALAXY MATCH IS CONCERNED THERE IS REFERENCE TO IT IF WHEN GOING ONTO THE LA GALAXY SITE YOU SEARCH FOR CRYSTAL PALACE IT BRINGS UP PRESS REPORTS REGARDING THE MATCH. WILL POST AGAIN WHEN REPLY REC'D FROM PALACE. |

I have contacted somebody directly at the club first thing this morning and am expecting a prompt reply. Will post up any news when I have it.
I shall refrain from any other comment at this stage until we know the facts regarding all three matches.

Well according to the official club website today, the three games in the USA are confirmed pre season matches and they even give the links to the LA Galaxy and Virginia Beach Mariners websites for more information.
So would appear everything is going ahead as planned but with the first match being a day earlier. Lets hope so anyway. |

I wouldn't necessarily assume that the official site has the up to date situation. I am more than a little concerned about the VB game appearing to be "uncertain". Will hopefully get an answer from CP this morning.

I ordered two tickets for the LA Galaxy game direct from the www.richmondkickers.com website last week. The links to the game and tickets were still there this morning.
I emailed the club last Thursday about the Vigininia Beach Mariners game to find out if it was still on. They replied on Friday but I was away until today. This was my reply. Dear Karen At present our representative in the USA is in contact with Virginia Beach Mariners concerning this issue. We will update supporters via our website as soon as we have any news. Kind regards. Marc Harrington Communications Officer Crystal Palace FC Also from Virginian Pilot on line edition dated the 10th June hidden amongst the review of the Mariners last match was this snippet. Mariners publicist Jeanne Evans said the team has no update on the uncertain status of the July 22 exhibition against English team Crystal Palace at the Sportsplex. So I'm none the wiser. Hopefully there will be some news this week. |

Needless to say CPFC have not replied yet. ShipEagle anything ?
On a brighter note I have got a huge streetmap of Richmond with loads of pubs marked on it. Most of them are in the Shockoe Slip area. The most suitable ones nearest the ground for immediate pre-match drinking are: The Commercial Tap House, 111 North Robinson Street The Sidewalk Cafe, 2101 West Main Street. These two are about 15mins walk from the stadium and right next to each other. ![]()

My message to the Club was as follows:-
quote AS YOU ARE NO DOUBT AWARE A NUMBER OF LOYAL SUPPORTERS HAVE BOOKED VERY EXPENSIVE TRIPS TO FOLLOW THE CLUB ON THEIR USA TOUR IN JULY. IT IS NOW NOTICED THAT THE DATE OF THE FIRST MATCH HAS BEEN BROUGHT FOWARD FROM THE SUNDAY TO THE SATURDAY WHICH COULD CAUSE A NUMBER OF THE THOSE TRAVELLING SUPPORTERS PROBLEMS WITH THEIR ARRANGEMENTS, HOPEFULLY MY GROUP OF 8 CAN AMEND OUR PLANS TO BE THERE ON THAT DAY, HOWEVER THERE ARE NOW RUMOURS THAT OTHER MATCHES ON THE TOUR ARE IN DOUBT AND I WOULD BE PLEASED TO RECEIVE YOUR URGENT CONFIRMATION THAT THE OTHER TWO MATCHES ARE STILL GOING AHEAD AS PLANNED AND THAT THE SCHEDULE IS NOW AS FOLLOWS:- SATURDAY 15TH JULY vs CRYSTAL PALACE FC USA AT THE US NAVAL ACADEMY, ANNAPOLIS WEDNBESDAY 19TH JULY vs LA GALAXY AT UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA SATURDAY 22ND JULY vs VIRGINIA BEACH MARINERS AT THE VITRGINIA BEACH SPORTSSPLEX YOUR URGENT CONFIRMATION WOULD BE APPRECIATED. unquote Have today received following response:- quote At present our representative in the USA is in contact with the clubs concerning this issue. We will update supporters via our website as soon as we have any news. Kind regards. Marc Harrington Communications Officer Crystal Palace FC unquote Looks like the same response to KKL, I dont like the sound of this at all but lets hope the tour is still going ahead as otherwise a number of supporters are going to be well out of pocket or lumbered with a holiday to the USA while the team play somewhere else. What a way to treat supporters. Last edited by SHIPEAGLE : 13-06-2006 at 06:50 PM. |

Still no reply from CPFC.
Although the VB game is still not back on their site the Richmond tickets are still on sale so that looks more positive. Would it be asking too much for just a little more information from Palace ? ![]()

N,
At the risk of incurring some headbangings, where does this information come from ? I can't see anything on the official site.

Try www.cpfcusa.com. That seems to work.
Not that it clears up the confusion, as it still shows the Mariners game to be on and tickets available. |
