It’s not saving me any money though because I have about 200 books stacked up to read that I needn’t have bought. Oops. They were bargains though :) |

As I said earlier I shall no doubt end up buying it anyway. |

My point was that I’d expect the bulk of the cost to go to the author, with any difference in price being based on whether it’s a printed or digital version. Seeing as, even on a relatively short print run, it’s less than a pound, to print a paperback with a coloured cover, I’d expect any difference to be about a pound. People expecting to buy a 9.99 paperback book for 2.99 in a digital format, surely think that the method of distribution is the major value in their purchase? |

........Actually You got me interested and so I just looked it up and apparently the publisher gives a royalty of 8-12% of the sale price to the author. So printing, distribution publisher are taking the bulk. I am guessing that’s the wholesale price that the publisher sells it to the retailer but it could include retail % I guess. I didn’t dig that deep. Your point re printing still stands. With self publishing and self marketing growing I guess this is changing. I would think Amazon promoting a book these days has a massive impact but again that’s a guess. Thanks. |

As you say, as you get older things change. you only need 3 or 4 books because by the time you have read the last one you can’t remember what the first one was all about and you can start again! :) :) not quite there yet but did get a chapter into one recently before I realised I had already read it :) wife did the same last week as it happens - oops. |

It gets on my nerves on the BBS when someone posts something relevant to a question being asked, and then just a couple of posts later someone else posts exactly the same thing. Is it that feckin' hard to just read the last few posts before you post? I'm not suggesting people should re-read the whole thread when it's multiple pages.

It's 70 years in EU and US. Others vary but at least 50 years is common as most countries are signatories to the Berne Convention. It was 50 years prior to 1993 in the EU, which seemigly wasn't retrospective which means European labels can release reissues of 50+ years old records without paying any royalties. The US has been 70 years in 1989, but appears to be retrospective as there aren't US labels putting out these "grey market" reissues. Anything before 1925 was considered to be in the public domain and free from copyright. There are slightly different rules between literature, art, music and tv/radio broadcasts. That's as I understand it, happy to be corrected if I'm wrong. I cancelled the order in any case, will get a bonafide reissue or a second hand copy. |

I'm not sure this annoys me as such, more that it's flabbergasting
I've seen it quite a lot recently and today whilst out on my bike. I went past some people chatting with a few dogs running around and one had a pram. As I went past them I noticed that there was not a baby in the prem but a small ugly looking dog. I mean seriously what actually has to be your mind set to take a dog for a walk in a pram Absolutely barking mad (pun intended) |

Had to google it. I think they are called Dog Strollers. If it’s for dogs with arthritis then perhaps fair enough, but if it’s a fashion statement...then oh dear, indeed. |

He used to justify his personal bus by citing increased visibility, because of the high driving position. He wasn't keen on the logic that if everyone bought them there would be no advantage. Then again, he lives in the wilds of the home counties, where they are, of course, essential. He could have just said it's a personal choice, but there you go. |

In The US, there used to be the big cadillacs etc.. Even in the UK you had Zephyrs, Austin Cambridge estates, Granadas and Cortinas. And via the old Rolls Royce you could have entered Narnia. Today you have some people carriers and some short penised twats like to drive massive american style trucks and even public versions of military vehicles. But we have had Range Rovers and Transit vans for a long time. And there are still small cars around. Pre cars needed the length of a horse or horses added to them - even the buses. And the very early cars had some kind of steam contraption. I wouldn't say that the super cars of the 70s were particularly small or an E Type for that matter. |

Sooner or later something will need to be done about them. The UK is full of narrow streets double-lined with parked cars: massive cars are a becoming a public nuisance. |

Also, pretty much all cars of all types are bigger now than they used to be. For extreme examples, look at minis, but also look at the size of a modern Golf compared with a Mk 1.
|
Back in the 60's and 70' there were big cars but they mostly were slim, look at most house garages on older houses to see thus. Cars now are of course longer I think the first Q7 was 2 meters long and also wider. Parking spaces are designed to fit in as many cars as possible soon we all end up with dented doors. Recently Lakeside shopping centre redid all of its car parks, all the spaces now fit mordern cars, its really goid except the wife then wants to get out and waste hours in the shops.

They took an iconic brand and completely reinvented it - to create a funky, but well-engineered range of small cars that seem to sell like hot cakes around the world. Buyers clearly love love them - mainly, I suspect, because the designs are based on an iconic one suitably modernised and, most importantly, they know they are buying BMW engineering underneath. For BMW, they have successfully entered the small car market, with a premium product, and avoided cheapening their "prestige" (yes, I know ...) BMW large car brand. Surely everyone is a winner with the brand engineering ? Quote:

I have always used buses. They are quite large. If you want to go down the tax route, and reduce street parking etc., pay extra tax on 2nd car ownership per household. Exemption is based on engine size or somesuch. That way people can have a SUV, but they will pay tax on having an unnecessary second one. Or hopefully wont pay because the second car is a small run around. Catholics can be exempted. |
