Plus, we have the typical Chilean ordering food for the table to fill everyone up before the first pint has gone down.

Hedgehog 06-07-2021 11:13 PM

Listened to the second half of the Euro game today in the car, and they were using the ESPN video feed commentary.

A very odd experience as there were long pauses with no commentary just crowd noise. I guess it works on TV, but very annoying on the radio.

Added to the annoyance was having Taylor Twellman ramble on, especially about the “vertical game” at least 3 times (and previous games). Not sure what it is… I assume long balls down the middle.

Peter.

A while back you went through a period of making a cock out of yourself at increasingly regular intervals. I seem to remember that you posted something along the lines of 'Oooh, the Mods have had a word with me' and you pulled back a tad.

I tore you a new arsehole when you tried a similar thing the other day... seriously fella, the 'edgy', confrontational banterboy PeterH v2.0 is a backward step. Just go back to how you used to be... :)

What a dreadful mess this is.

I made the stuff up about the mods having a word,,,even Les took part in the joke.

Then you ask me to stop being the 'edgy' confrontational banter boy by using words like 'I tore you a new arsehole'. That was on a thread that I did post up as a bit of fun, but then the clever clogs decided to ruin it.

I have said that I post a lot, and a lot of shite when I am not busy, and I am apart from the missus.

Tell me, how I should react when I logon and find people have been having fun at my expense.

TBF. I am the idiot. It took me 20 years to realise the BBS had a fair number of idiots on it. I guess it took Brexit and the Pandemic to bring them to the surface.

I was a compliant sap on here in the past, I'm not going back to that. Especially because you are telling me to.

Not sure why you keep poking me with a stick. You could just put me on ignore. I recommend that to everyone. The mods aren't going to ban me, so that is the only option open to those that tire of me.

Quality over quantity is impossible to justify, just by the very nature of the BBS.

Oh dear, Peter, not you as well? I had not thought you would be so simple as to take post count literally.

Given that the average length of your posts is probably four or five times my own, maybe more, you might well concede that post count in this context is an irrelevant dynamic.

Maybe she will appear on here like that strange situation some time back when someone came on here berating their partner for wasting time on here again.

That was really leftfield. It will never beat Paul Daniels or even that Medhi (sp) character.

But you must read all those post that you are succinctly replying to. There is a dynometric of time to think about there. On a long, fast moving thread, that is a lot of work (or distraction from work TBF). However, I admit that I am mostly playing catch up.

Does it matter whether I am English or not? Isn't that most of the issue here...little englanders getting butt hurt over some silly spelling? And one in particular that lives in Scotland with whatever English and mixed language they have up there.

I teach American English as a rule. I did use The OUP American English File. If Oxford are promoting that, who are plebs on the BBS to judge. To my knowledge there isn't a OUP British English File.

There are the Cambridge set of coursebooks and exams and I am currently using the great Pearson software. But for the most part I think TOEIC, TOEFL are more globally used. I think the latter two are preferred by our colonial cousins in Australia.

Painful, isn't he ? Massively verbose and constantly stating the bleeding' obvious. I can't remember who, but some venerable old commentator used to say that television commentators should let the pictures do the talking and only add in commentary as absolutely necessary. I quite enjoyed Lee Dixon though. I thought he was quite funny at times and he doesn't seem to get so wrapped in the stupid exagerations that most pundits slip into.

I am sure it's sacrilege for many on here because he was such a hero as a player at the time but I really can't bear to listen to Wrighty. He rarely has anything interesting to say and it's even less likely to be insightful. Just emotional drivel for the most part. That maybe a little harsh but not that inaccurate. I can't help but like the guy but as a pundit he is pretty useless.

Keane and Neville were both good value last night and it was nice to hear Roy Keane talk with such respect for Southgate as a man and as a Manager. Roy rarely talks in such gushing terms about any player/Manager. I also thought he nailed it with Shaw (as did Neville) in that Mourinho gets stick for giving Shaw a hard time but Shaw wasn't delivering/was never fully fit and TBF nothing else had worked with him and that players do need the harsh word sometimes to get a response.

I don't mind Lee Dixon, but I agree that he got a little over-excited last night, and caught up in the Mattarface burbling approach.

I remember the crushing disappointment in the early days of MOTD2 of discovering that Lee Dixon was actually quite affable and erudite - not at all what I expected after his playing days. See also: Gary Neville.

I think that's very obvious - and we know it from his time as a Palace player - but whilst it is quite enjoyable to watch him getting over-excited it isn't what you want from a studio pundit.

I posted elsewhere, I was listening to the Italy/Spain game while driving and they were using the ESPN TV feed.

It was painful listening as there were so many commentatorless periods with just the crowd noise - I kept yelling at the radio, "WTF is going on?". The commentator (Jon Champion) appeared to be taking the advice in bold above!

Lee Dixon and Graeme Le Saux share co-commentator duties for NBC over here.

I've always quite liked both of them, neither taking it too serious unlike some others I've heard.

Sometimes they will have both of them on together doing a game, and they have some pretty good (harmless) banter.

They also sound very much alike which confuses the heck out of me!

I always liked Dixon when he was briefly on MOTD, obviously more articulate than Shearer &
Wright, but he soon left.
It’s hard to think of a worse football commentator than Sam
Matterface. Actually, when he’s on TalkSport he’s OK, he hasn’t learnt to tone it down for TV, in fact he now seems to think it’s all about him.

Pritti innit, not the worst looking woman in the world, by quite a way.

Pritti as in Patel.

The antidote to this is obviously the various shots of despairing Brighton fans hiding their faces behind clackers at a certain game in 2013, as their "Premier-League-ready" team is firmly put in its place. Again. Can't be arsed to look for the pictures, but you know the ones I mean.

Royal Mail delivery man.

Had a tracked (not signed for) delivery expected yesterday. No one was at home (which I knew would be the case) but didn't even bother to ring the Ring doorbell where I would have asked them if they would be so kind as to leave at a particular place. What's the f--king point of having a ring doorbell if bastards don't press it! Must have taken more effort to fill out a card and take back to the sorting office than just done the obvious thing. Grrrr

They’ve been known to pre-prepare a load of “sorry you were out” cards and whizz round poking those through letterboxes without even trying to deliver packages.

As a postie in a former life, and I can confirm that writing out cards in advance is a known practice, but usually only on days with inclement weather etc, because it's harder to write them out on your walk. Your theory is they're doing it to save time, but writing out 20 unnecessary cards would negate that, and you're really wanting to get rid of the packages rather than carry them around.

Also, not getting the signature removes any possibility of the postman favourite 'hand the pen and the signature card with both hands to the attractive woman holding up her towel' trick.

We need to keep a careful weather eye on ants, I am becoming convinced that these absolute ***** will be the earth's dominant species in 20 years time.

They are gradually ruining my lawn, there is nothing that will deter them. Kill off a nest and within days another army will have marched in to build a new one next door to it. I have even resorted to googling 'can you keep an anteater as a pet', the answer is yes in parts of the US which do not experienc weather extremes but here in the UK the winter cold would be too much for them. It said that they need to eat up to 10,000 ants per day which is challenging when kept as a pet, well they would have no problem whatsoever in my garden, in fact they would probably end up obese having gorged morning noon and night on the little bastards.

This should cheer you up, Bipe: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ant_colony#Supercolonies

Bipe 10-07-2021 01:27 PM

Yeah thanks for that, I will keep tabs on how my supercolony is evolving and report back in due course.

The picture of the ant's nest plastercast on that page is actually quite interesting, around 8 feet in depth so no wonder buggering about on the surface to try to destroy them has little impact. They just retreat to their subterranean lairs and then burst out all over the lawn again as soon as my back is turned. Complete wankers.

How about doing this and making a bit of money?

Have you ever watched the movie "The Hellstrom Chronicle"?

Watch that and you will see you are about right - less the anteater!

On the subject of posties the practice of dropping rubber bands on the pavement. Certain areas are now a no go area when walking the dog. Plus the money waste. Put them in your pocket use them again or face a fine for litterimg.

Why not just save your time and just brush the anthills off when it's dry? Surely if you're maintaining (and occasionally rolling) your lawn well it won't suffer and the ants are actually aerating it.

My garden is over run by red ants. Possibly because the estate was built on farmland. I'll always end up covered in bites after gardening as you don't even notice the little buggers on you, but I still don't get the obsession with trying to kill everything (slugs and snails aside as they destroy some plants given the chance).

My kids used to collect them and put them on their scooter handlebars which the children at my son's school still do.

How hard it is to buy a single pint of milk in the supermarket nowadays. Always have to buy 2 or 4 and end up chucking most of it.

Hedgehog 11-07-2021 06:44 PM

There is a small Ex-Pat community out here where I live, and for my sins I'm on their Facebook group, but never met any of them bar one who I knew from work.

Anyway, they decide to have a get together on Wednesday (which I have no intention of going to). It is being called for 6:30 in a local "pub". A few of the people are saying they cannot get there to 7 or 7:30.

Me trying to be helpful post on there that the places closes at 8:00pm and maybe they should call the proprietor and check.

For my trouble I got a curt reply from the group leader/administrator that she is well aware of the closing time and that is plenty of time!

Bunch of self righteous wankers... let them enjoy their hour of talking about nothing but how wonderful Britain is and how much they are homesick.

Freeze it. Or even turn it into a milk ice-lolly.

You'd have thought that tonight for the football which is probably midmorning there would be a good excuse for a meet-up. Not midweek when the barman wants to piss off home.

To be fair there is also a thread on there about a bar (not an English type pub) that is showing the game and has proved popular with the ex-pats for the previous games.

This "event" Wednesday would appear to be for for a social type get together, probably dominated by women although some men say they are going.
