Genuine question, doesn’t your detergent kill the plants?

UK holidaymakers in the UK.
I guess a lot of this people are used to their all-inclusive Costa's breaks, because a hell of a lot of them sure don't know how to behave.
We've had our bolt hole on the Isle of Wight for years, and I've never come across so many rude and generally unpleasant people there as this summer. Thank Christ they usually f**k off abroad.

I know It's like everyone came out of lockdown and forgot that there are other road users. The stupid Chainlink and the dogs dinner that is the new traffic light system by St Marys Hospital instead of the roundabout haven't helped. See no many people go the wrong way or try an U-turn. Mate came over and said, "Why don't they replace this with a roundabout?" I could have punched him.

My cousin's daughter's partner is an A&E Doctor and they were living in Bristol. He has been transferred to South Wales somewhere and apparently it is an easy drive from the place they have in Bristol.

Sounds very idyllic wherever it is his hospital is located, despite I assume being near to Cardiff or Swansea.

I would love to BUT £££ and swamped with tourists. I have a friend in Holbeten. It’s great and would be brilliant if we could live near but we need a place that has no neighbours and 4 acres for the mad rescue dogs with issues. We would be ok here but for neighbours (who are great but we want none ) and the bloody ferries who have cut and cut services that make it impossible.

No funds for liquor either. I haven't had a drink since Friday, and that was a glass of white with food.

I might have a Bailey's later, the wife has gone to Santiago for a few days....:afro:

I am not the one with countertop problems. Come on Tim, the start of this spat is only a week old ... at least try and remember that.

Covid related, at least by psychology.

We have all read or listened to the 'sneering' right wing comments about government hand outs resulting in a section of people not being in a rush to go back to work. On the BBS, the general sentiment is that people (at least BBSers) can't wait to get back to work or study - maybe with a more flexible approach, but an enthusiasm to get back to the grind.

The UK Furlough system is mirrored in part by a universal payment to the underpaid sector here - this covers the most vulnerable up to those earning not much more than the mininum wage. This has been extended until the end of the year.

In the midst of the crisis unemployement rose to about 15%, but this figure has come down to 10% or so - especially as construction workers went back. We now have a situation where cafes, restaurants and stores are reopening, but they can't find many willing to work while the universal payments are being paid. The government are even paying the benefit to those on top of wages should they go back to work.

But a personal anecdote has me thinking the 'sneering' Tory class have a point.

My feckin useless son again. He shows no interest in working, and is happy to leech on free family accommodation in the meantime. To inspire him we invited him to our countryside house. Preferring to pay him to do our various DIY jobs than strangers - all board paid for. Also giving him the opportunity to research the general area for opportunities.

He lasted three days before deciding he couldn't be arsed.

In context this is the same son that hasn't got vaccinated, carried the virus around on public buses, and didn't even bother to get tested. The same son that I have financed twice on incompleted higher education, and also failed to complete government finance higher education twice.

The reason my missus is in Santiago is to organise a moving firm to bring the rest of our gear from Santiago. It sees we have to now make him homeless to wake him up somewhat.

He is 35 years old. FFS.

Sounds like you can't do much more than you are doing - ultimately at his age he needs to take responsibility. Very frustrating for you and your partner though. Having said that, the death of his biological dad may have created issues, and maybe he needs some professional help. Maybe even being home less might kick him in to gear - but on the other hand, he could get worse in that situation - ending up on drugs or involved in crime.

Thanks.

TBF his father died a good while ago. He does have his psychological issues, but is as unlikely to go and see someone about them or discuss them even with his best friends of brother and sister. I have tried a quiet chat on occasions but it is more like I am talking at him rather than talking with him. Parents can't advise their kids anyway. On even the most obvious or simple things the adult kids will just go ahead and do the opposite.

Many families have the one offspring that can't find their path in life. That also begs the question that is it necessary that someone should find a defined path - just because it is expected.

It is likely that his life is set out now. Fortunately, he fathered only the one grandson, who is now 13, and he hasn't dropped other little bombs all over the place.

My wife and I have come to the conclusion that when we leave this life, he will be the one living out his days in our house in the country/beach. Pottering around like some hermit.

If I can be forgiven for a vomit inducing phrase....

It is, what it is.

Adomola Lookman signs for Leicester and comes out with a well rehearsed line, "It's a great honour to be signed by such a big and amazing club with such a huge history.
Now maybe Adomola didn't show up for his history lessons or maybe he thought he was going back to Everton. Yes, Leicester, in the last five or six years have won the league and the cup. Before that though? Maybe the odd League Cup but to say they have a huge history is a little bit revisionist. All I ever remember, pre- the world beginning in 93, is them going up and a few seasons later going back down again. Rinse and repeat.

"What was those fancy medical names again?" he replied.

I thought that Chile had issues regarding water supplies with concerns heightened by Climate change. Think you will find dishwashers use far less water than washing up by hand.

PeterH 01-09-2021 01:17 AM

Okay, let's breakdown this myth. A little dance with Harry Palace. And his opinion (or Samsung publicity dressed up as fact.

Let's start with how do you get a dishasher into your house. Where are the dishwasher and its replacement parts made, and how is it transported. Where are they stored, and where are they displayed for selling? How do you get to the shop that sells it, and how does the dishasher get your house and get installed. What happens when it needs maintenance?

I suppose it uses water and electricity to run, and some form of detergent. And then you are scrapping off the big chunks and rinsing under a running tap before items go in - at least if you want to keep the maintenance issues down and prolong its useful life.

What happens to the machine once it is past its useful life?

Remember all those old refrigerators.

TBF I have never owned a car, so I can agree that I need to get with the program. But are we saying that walking, cycling or public transport use is less beneficial to the environment than running a car.

In advance, I fully anticipate some false stories from BBSers on how they always use their dishwashers to the absolute maximum environmental efficiency. That kind of fake dishonesty is cheating a little.

I will not mention my solar panels then.....nor the wonders of recycling products. Times change and we move on technologies change. How by the way do you heat the water you use when washing up.

Depends if you leave the tap running. Middle class people in urban areas here have dishwashers. I live semi-rural, where does my dishwasher water go.

Although we are currently being connected to the grid, so semi-rural will probably be semi-urban in a couple of years.

If I wash up a selection of plates and cups I use two bowls of water. One to wash, one to rinse, and a touch under the tap. Are you telling me a dishwasher uses less than that. I wouldn't be happy keeping my filthy crockery and glasses in the machine to accumulate. That sounds like Timbo and his filthy countertops.

What do you do with the saucepans, oven pots, and frying pans?

I suspect some of those are washed by hand - overall where is the saving? It's looking like you eco-warriors are actually using more water than us luddites, and then talking nonsense to cover up your convenient middle class laziness.

Are you comparing solar panels and recycled products with a dishwasher? I suspect environmentally they are at opposite ends of the spectrum.

Are solar panels now viable in the UK due to climatic crisis caused in great part by needless overconsumption? It exists, therefore I must have it.

They came with the bungalow.....i was responding to your comment about fake environmental efficiencies.

Solar panels work fine in the UK its not about direct sunlight they work perfectly well on dark cloudy days. Its about light not direct sunlight.

Recycling was about what happens to dishwashers after there useful life ends.

We might get solar panels heavily subsidised in a couple of years.

Are all dishwashers recycled? Are they recycled in the same way as some chav leaving their old fridge outside my front door in the middle of the night to dispose of?

I wouldn't necessarily trust the entire UK population to do the right thing that the responsible brigade do. Plenty of stories of the disgusting brigade emptying their full ashtrays out of their car windows, and improper littering of covid masks. The convenient machine will one day become an inconvenience to some. As much as a Covid or Christmas bought puppy.

Closer to home, I'd barely trust a single Chilean to dispose of this kind of stuff in an environmental way.

Very much the correct thread for this, but I very much doubt washing by hand in Chile uses more water than a dishwasher for the simple reason that Chilean kitchen sinks are no bigger than the bowl you eat your cornflakes out of (slight hyperbole I'll admit, but only slight).
My lard-arse-American-portion-sized dinner plates only just fit into our kitchen sink (and that's no hyperbole).
And another thing, the sink and subsequently the work tops are all too low. Short-arse bloody latins.

I will be in Santiago long weekend of 24th Sept -27th Sept. Includes old boys cricket against the warring Indians and some poker and BBQs. Try for a meet up.

Ooooh. Good choice there. Bit dry though. Kross brewery right there.

On the way to mine.

CT_Palace 01-09-2021 02:13 AM

Dryness is a big problem yes... 2 of the 3 have a pozo though.

PeterH 01-09-2021 02:26 AM

Here or on the Virus thread.

I see the authorities have banned the big 'fondas' - outside meat, drink and folklore celebrations for September 18th. But they have approved the military celebration and march past on September 19th. Which is held in the same park where one of the biggest 'fondas' is usually held.

The sheep can take their families along to that in large numbers and wave little flags.

I predict some protests.

Bollox, have you seen all the bubbles that come out of a dishwaher if it overflows? I have it filled the whole kitchen up. Washing up uses no electrical energy so it doesnt matter how ‘green’ the energy is.

I dont bother using the dishwasher as yoi have to rinse them before you load and the rinse when they come out, I might aswell just have cleaned them in the sink and put them away first time.

Not sure if this is a whoosh...... but washing up in cold water is not ideal....therefore you use some form of power to heat the water.

Talking of buying a better dishwasher, one of my ambitions in life is to replace all my white goods with Miele versions.

I know that's quite sad but I want the feeling of never having to buy them again + I can say to any visitors "these are 25 years old, still good as new".

Miele might be good, I though the same with NEFF, Fridge Freezer, Induction Hob, Oven, Microwave, all really shoddy kit, and would never buy again.

Ron Dodgers 01-09-2021 09:15 AM

Miele washing machines are great, but I wasn't impressed by the Miele dishwasher I had, nor the tumble dryer. Both of those conked out after about five years and weren't worth the cost of repair. Out of guarantee repairs are eye-wateringly expensive.

I was reading that the amount of people resigning is at an unprecedented high due largely to covid, lockdowns and wanting change. Not necessarily grievance with their employer but wanting something different whether it be a different location, more Wfh, a more vocational profession ( nearly a million people wanting to get a job helping people) an ambition to earn through a hobby etc etc.

That would ring true with LinkedIn. They don’t have an issue with their employer but the last 2 years have caused massive change.

Same at Stansted. Just take the back route on the approach roundabout and avoid the ludicrous drop charge.

That water is heated whether you wash up or not. If the water that replaces the hot needs extra energy, that will be marginal compared to a 40 minute dishwasher cycle.

More to the point, the argument about being ‘greener’ by using your dishwasher over the sink is nonsense, even if the water is heated.

The vast majority of homes in the uk heat water using gas. Dishwashers use electricity. You can fuel your home using green electricity but there is no such thing as green gas.

Your argument is a bit like saying electric cars have equal or less impact on the environment as petrol or diesel cars. It’s utter nonsense.

Dishwashers also use significantly less water so there is less water to heat.

I work volunteering for a homeless charity and sometimes when you get to a customers whose donating a mattress you rightly have to inspect for a fire label plus stains.
When you have to turn down a mattress you sometimes get the "Yea but it's for homeless people who would be grateful, 1) it isn't just homeless people who would buy/donated your mattress and 2) even so they don't have to pay/donated for the privilege of sleeping in your festered piss.

But I heard a new one today "Yea but the Afghan refugees wouldn't refuse it" No dear as much as I don't want an influx of refugees even they don't want to sleep on your pissy mattress.

Also one of our jobs was allocated collection of 3 items, we turn up to an old people's residential home and end up being donated 1/2 her flat, as by the looks of it she was moving out and thought we'd be a cheap alternative for house clearance.

Totally get the pissy mattress thing, but the fire label thing has frustrated me in the past. I had a two year old sofa from ikea, it was clearly hardly used and when I moved from one rented place to another, it wouldn't fit - so I thought I'd do a nice thing and donate it. What i hadn't realised was that somehow the fire label was missing - it was also a modular sofa and the chap who came to look at it said that every "module" needed a label - none had. So they wouldn't accept it.
