To be fair most college starting QB’s will have had years of fawning over them through high school and college, being the popular kid who is always told how amazing they are while having their pick of the cheerleaders so it’s no surprise most of them are confident cocky shits

To be fair, Mayfield was a walk-on at Texas Tech. He started as a freshman then got pissed when he lost his starting job due to injury. (To the Giants backup, btw) He then went to Oklahoma as a walk-on. He won the starting job at Oklahoma and got a scholarship then.

In terms of the pick itself, not convinced we need a second pass catching TE. Would have been better off staying a blocking one later in the draft. We don't have any holes though, so maybe he was just best player available at the time by some distance.

Now, I would never have let him go and think he has top 5-10 potential as a QB but he still demonstrated a few issues for the 49ers. He did throw only throw 2 more TDs than INTs.

He's now being paid to play like a top 5 QB from the start. I'm actually a bit bemused that the Niners didn't go for Allen Robinson for him. He's got very few weapons besides Garcon (who is getting on a bit), McKinnon (very good receiving back) and the mismatch of players he had last season. Though getting him McGlinchey (Best of a bad lot, so we'll see) and Pettis (again, on of the best of a bad lot) is a start.

Shanahan can make an offense look a lot better than the sum of the parts anyway, and that's perfect for Jimmy.
