Now signed for the Bears.

SteveyHawking 26-03-2014 01:48 PM

Evan Mathis on the trade block now. Errr... He's the best left guard in the business. Please don't get rid of him Chip!

Proposals passed:
  • Officials can now use replay review to rule on loose ball recoveries—the so-called "NaVorro Bowman" rule, so dubbed after the 49ers were unable to challenge an obvious Niners fumble recovery in the NFC Championship that the refs awarded to the Seahawks.
  • The goalpost uprights will be extended five feet higher, to reduce the instances of a kick sailing above the upright and leaving it to the officials' judgment.
  • The game clock will no longer stop when a quarterback is sacked.
  • "Roll up blocks," where a blocker hits the side of the knee of a player, are banned.
  • Officials will now be able to speak wirelessly with each other, and with the central replay office.
  • While not a new rule, the existing rule forbidding the use of the ball as a prop during TD celebrations will be extended to ban dunking the ball over the crossbar.

Proposals tabled for further review:
  • Though a proposal to move the line of scrimmage on PATs to the 25 was officially tabled, there will be a change. For the first two weeks of the preseason, extra point tries will be snapped from the 20, making it roughly a 38-yard kick. (Historical data says to expect a success rate in the high 80s.) The league will monitor the results, and presumably vote on changing the rule at next year's meetings.
  • A proposal to do away with overtime in preseason games and let them end in ties.
  • A proposal to add six boundary-line cameras at every game to make replay reviews more conclusive. (This was the one where Bill Belichick joked that the NFL needs to hold a bake sale if they can't afford the cameras.)

Proposals voted down:
  • Owners voted against moving the kickoff from the 35-yard-line to the 40.
  • Owners voted against a proposal that would have made every play challengeable by coaches.
  • Owners voted against allowing officials to use replay to review personal foul penalty calls.

Surprising news in the case of Ravens RB Ray Rice, accused of knocking his fiancée unconscious at an Atlantic City casino last month. He's been indicted on a more serious charge than prosecutors initially asked for, one that could carry a sentence of three to five years in prison.

Rice initially faced a charge of simple assault, but prosecutors presented a charge of aggravated assault to a grand jury, which returned an indictment. It's a big difference: Simple assault carries a maximum of six month in prison, while aggravated assault has a maximum of three to five years. Considering neither Rice nor his fiancée, Janay Palmer, want this case to be tried, it's probably safe to assume the reported video of the alleged knockout punch exists.
After reading how many women refused to press charges against the son of the Boston Red Sox broadcaster before he killed a woman, I will be sick if this woman does not testify. (if the state has a case. allegedly)

pauldrulez 27-03-2014 11:15 PM

Sadly FB, it seems to be the way these things go.

I hope there is strong video evidence one way or another.

Listening to Dave Spadaro at the moment and Mathis isn't on the trade block, people have enquired about him and we've listened to see what's available but we're not actively looking to trade him or DeSean either.

We have however signed Sanchez as backup to Foles. Hmmmmmm

And like that... DeSean is released. Wowsers. Looks like we'll be going for a WR early on in the draft this year!

There'll definitely be a fair few teams queuing up to obtain Jackson's signature. 49ers, Panthers, Jets, Raiders to name a few.

He always seems to me to have a real attitude problem and for that reason never really fulfilled his potential. Obviously would suit the Raiders. I suspect the Chiefs might be interested with the coach link.

Yeah the Chiefs are a good shout. They've not got much in the way of WRs as it is even without the coach link.

The Eagles have released star receiver DeSean Jackson. The move is something of a surprise—though he was likely done in Philly, they might have gotten something for him in a trade—but the timing is fascinating. The announcement came exactly 35 minutes after the publication of an NJ.com article alleging the Eagles were concerned about Jackson's possible gang ties.

There is a lot to unpack here. First the facts, uncovered by Eliot Shorr-Parks and A.J. Perez:
  • Jackson was contacted by an LAPD detective seeking information on a 2010 gang-related murder in Los Angeles. Jackson was not a suspect, but police believe he may have had information about a suspect in the murder, Theron Shakir. Shakir, a purported Crips member, is a rapper who has worked on Jackson's record label, and the two have been photographed together. (Shakir was acquitted of the murder.)
  • In 2012, another gang-related murder took place outside a party in Los Angeles. The building was owned or leased by a member of Jackson's family, and some documents belonging to him were found inside. Police attempted to contact Jackson, who was not a suspect, but were unable to get in touch with him.
  • Jackson had a previously unreported arrest in 2009 for marijuana possession, tinted windows, and disturbing the peace.
Then, there are the implications. The LAPD detective, Eric Crosson, clearly believes Jackson himself is part of the Crips gang. His evidence includes Jackson throwing up supposed Crip gang signs in photos, even on the field in NFL games. Also, the name of Jackson's record label—Jaccpot—because, according to Crosson, "Crips avoid putting a 'C' next to a 'K' because in gangspeak, that stands for 'Crip Killer.'"

I'm gutted, really really gutted at him being released but if the reports are true then we had to get shot of him sooner rather than later when he's standing in front of a judge. His play making ability is going to be massively missed but we realised the talent of a down field threat last season in Riley Cooper, Maclin is back as well so I think we're still looking pretty good at WR although I do expect us to maybe draft a WR early or even trade up to nab someone special, although I have no idea who that might be as I don't really follow College ball. I think we also have to look at the fact that Cooper and Maclin as well as Shady and now Sproles, are all very capable of catching the ball and running with it.

In Chip we trust.

The timing of my post couldn't have been more badly timed. Was only repeating what Spadaro said on the live stream. Maybe he wasn't aware of the DJax goings on either.

D-jax to Carolina would be awesome

The draft is ridiculously deep at WR. Don't think you can afford to trade up for Sammy Watkins (or would want to) but if they drafted a WR in the 1st round that is a carbon copy of Desean Jackson, Brandin Crooks will probably be there when they draft. Or they could go for a bigger guy in Donte Moncrief in round 2. Bruce Ellington (Andre's brother) could probably be had in the middle rounds.

I think the Panthers have been put off by his OTT cap figure, and diva reputation (having just got rid of Steve Smith)
