Are we allowed to use our phones as sat navs?

For example, i can use the sat nav in the car whilst driving, but it doesn't do traffic updates so sometimes I use my phone, would I be allowed to, for example, select an alternate route by touching my phone screen (it's mounted on the dash)?

I should have clarified that the law prohibits handheld devices ; I presume that if you are using a phone that is mounted as a sat nav you are not holding it, so no problem.

Same goes with bluetooth comms.

Thanks Maz, so additional question, if phone is mounted, can I use Spotify/Audible etc as it's not hand held?

Maz 29-07-2022 10:45 AM

I would presume so, yes. No different to using a car radio.

I do not do it but since I have a newer phone I can understand it, its ******* awful for calls hate using it, I direct people to call my landline now if it's an important or long call.

Put mobile to my ear and the persons voice is coming from the top of the phone or the bottom cannot decide but there is no speaker where it should be. End up moving it away from my ear to hear them. All about full screen, I guess. My wife's the same I can hear everything.

I thought it was just me, I can't hear it unless I put it on speaker unless I have some sort of headset/ear thingies. Bizarre that the reason you originally bought it, seems low down the designer's priorities. Flaming thing can be used to film an 8k movie, calculate DNA calculations or play games but make a phone call can be a mysteru on some even let alone hearing it :) BTW, I am no luddite but often puzzled by it.

Yes the UK Is increasingly populated by total and utter morons, it's so disheartening. I was in Dungeness the other week and some morons had left one on top of a picnic table on the edge of the nature reserve. Thankfully the table was the tough recycled plastic type and it didn't catch fire, just melted a fair bit.

Two opposites to this

NZ at the local park. Large Māori family dug a huge hole and put in a load of fire wood. Stuck food in and covered. Great time had by all. Everything back in place and NOT A SPOT of litter to be seen. Only thing you could see was bare earth where the pit was.

Some “new age” travelers stopped locally cut out a chunk of grass. Had a fire pit. Watered the grass and put it back when they left !!

You can do it if you have the sense and motivation. Unfortunately we have so many wankers, especially the ones that use McDonald’s drive throughs and throw their shit out the car windows, in this world.

Possibly the aerial and amp as they have to be tuned to the appropriate frequencies. The old phones only had 2G/3G to contend with but the new phones have to deal with 2G through to 5G signals now and the aerial is a jack of all trades now? Also probably more attention paid in the old phone to call components compared to the myriad of extras packed into new phones like NFC, wifi, GPS etc.

Litter (again). The irony of being behind a small van that was having to drive slowly because there was a road sweeper machine going along the gutter. Driver of van proceeds to throw his cigarette butt out the window followed by an empty packet.

We all worked this shit out during the pandemic, didn't we? I think a lot of people had some cosy idea of what our countrymen and women were all about - based mainly on our own friends, family and colleagues.

Utter pandemic selfishness, post brexit petrol station chaos, yobbery and thuggery at the Men's Euros and last season, rising crime, reality TV, vacuous bints and sex case footballers are role models, Boris is/was PM to pretty huge popular support, and the utter filth on social media (the trolling of weather forecasters being the latest) - all this seems to point to some moral vacuum. Led by the uncaring, in it for themselves. polticians and billionaires.

If Boris and his team can be involved in all those 'get-togethers' and he could still be broadly supported by the electorate - what does that say about where the British are at. Lots of outrage from the other 50% on sites such as this - but even that is just noise, the online version of tutting. Even the most outraged, and those most affected (in the saddest of ways) weren't exactly protesting outside parliament. They preferred the media in all its forms to protest for them. After all, there was a rumour of a pre-order of a PS5 or possible shipment of a new car to worry about.

:) yep so have I. When I lived in NZ I was always impressed with the neighbourlinesses of the people on the South Island. Where ever we seem to go someone was doing something that they were happy to share. Food, carpets tied on to 4x4 for the kids to be flung about, loaned snow chains, 400 meters of copper cable “pay me when you get your bank account sorted “ help from the school, kids looked after, invites at Christmas, etc all from strangers or people we had only just been introduced to. Fabulous country made by its people.
Just a shame it’s the other side of the bloody world !

Three irritating linguistic tics:

Calling out, as in "you should have called him out for his behaviour". A stupid Americanism - what's wrong with criticise, condemn, challenge?

"I'm living my best life". What's the alternative?

And worst of all "It is what it is". Usually delivered with smug certainty, as though the speaker has just discovered the true meaning of life.

Use of 'Reach out' instead of 'make contact'

Apparently goes back to an American TV ad from the 1970's?

I don't know the brand as I'm home now. "Going off on day 2 a slight exaggeration", but doesn't last like it does at home (obvs keeping it at 5 degrees in a fridge). It certainly doesn't taste of anything.

I noticed the Spanish seemed to be buying a lot of UHT.

Basically changed cintract termination date instead of going on to standard rate. Which they still charged. They were offering a free Alexa which if you accepted added 18 months to the contract. I ignored it never got it never accepted the link. However seems the IT dept at Talk Talk assumed everyone offered it would.

I persevered with the Whatsapp chat and quoted their website.

"You may get a better introductory offer with another provider, and you might also get a better deal if you bundle all your services together from a single supplier. If you decide to switch, you’ll need to give us 30 days’ notice by calling 0345 454 1111, but if you cancel after your contract ends on 03/08/2022 you won’t have any early termination fees to pay."

No mention of a disconnection charge and two months rental, that they were trying to stiff me out of.

I stuck with it and they eventually they said the contract will be cancelled, and I will get a refund of about a fiver.

I only had broadband, standard tv offering and a landline that I have never used. The reason, I decided to leave was the rather lovely way they broke the news to me about the charge going up.

"Like many of our customers, you've been enjoying a lower price of £48.00 a month with us. When your contract comes to an end on 03/08/2022, it will then change to £73.25 a month"

I recently discovered that we can get 5g in the area so I have gone with Three, and get faster speeds than the 108mbs max that Virgin were providing. We only watch "terrestrial", Netflix and Amazon so don't need their TV package. We will now be paying £18 a month.

Needless to say Virgin rang up today and told me they could give me a special deal....£45 pcm. I declined their offer.

Wherever it is, the place has bars on windows. Very safe area I reckon

I can’t understand why the driver didn’t park sideways

simon 03-08-2022 07:57 PM

It was at St Anthony’s hospital in Cheam. Didn’t see the driver, but they didn’t have a disabled sticker, which would have redeemed them slightly.

simon 03-08-2022 07:58 PM

I think it’s the pharmacy in that part of the hospital, which would explain the bars.

Judging by the width of those bays (disabled lorry parking??) it’s entirely possible that this driver is an opportunist who parked between two other cars.

People who expect more of politicians other than protecting their self-interest!

Oddly, they seem to have parked within the old old bays (faint white lines visible each side of the car), prior to the disabled markings being done

Obviously that doesn't excuse this joke piece of parking, whether they have a badge or not

People who use the word "utilise" where "use" would do.

Anyway, rant over, I'm off to utilise the toilet.

‘-isms’ or ‘-ists’

Read this morning that Beyoncé has written an ableist lyric and there has been a backlash…... A WHAT!

I am a ‘cantbearseddwithallthis-ist’. Join with me and we can start an ism.

I’ve quite enjoyed a couple of the early Overlap fan chats but the longer they have gone on, the more it’s become just a ****fest for ManU, Liverpool, Man City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Spurs. Their fans even get big comfy armchairs at the front while the ‘rest’ sit at the back. Not even sure if there is a Palace fan that goes to this is there? Certainly never gets air time if they are there. Guessing the HF were asked and we turned it down?

Re the fans that do get to talk. A couple of them are clearly knowledgeable (but understandably biased) but some of them are just cartoon characters with loud voices.

CP-RJW 04-08-2022 11:33 AM

I think ableism is just as legitimate and important a term as say racism.

I think the issue most certainly is as important but that wasn’t my point.

TBH I can’t say I have ever heard the term before. Shouldn’t it be disableism?

The difference between disablism and ableism
Both terms describe disability discrimination, but the emphasis is different.

Disablism emphasises discrimination against disabled people.

Ableism emphasises discrimination in favour of non-disabled people.

Should I say disablism or ableism?
Different people prefer to use one or other term. Or it might depend on which aspect of discrimination you want to emphasise.

Neither is considered wrong and they can be used interchangeably.

Just don't call it ~~~~ism as Beyoncé and Lizzo no doubt would.

Ableism is hardly a new concept. Things can exist before you hear of them. If it bothers you imagine how people with disabilities feel when there aren't suitable access facilities to a building, for example, or when they aren't taken seriously because of their disability, or are actively mocked.

Did you read my post, maybe it wasn’t clear? I wasn’t moaning about ableism I was moaning that there is a tendency to stick ist and ism behind any old word lately to create a new thing. and ableism just happened to be the latest due to the Beyoncé story of which I know no detail.

If ableism is a widely used term, then I have never heard of it. I am more than familiar with the real life issue which is very real, having been extremely close to it in our lives, having disabled family members. It’s the latter that makes it surprising I don’t know the word if this is in common usage. As another example, ‘metooism’ - WTF.

edit - I thought I would look up metooism assuming it was must be a recent one but it apparently dates back to the 19th century. you live and learn.
