Despite his accomplishments on the field, Lewis' public image was tarnished following a Super Bowl party on January 31, 2000. Following the party, a fight broke out between him and rapper Chino Nino's entourage, which Jacinth Baker, 21, and Richard Lollar, 24, died from stab wounds. Lewis and two companions, Reginald Oakley and Joseph Sweeting, were brought to an Atlanta police station for questioning. Eleven days later, along with Oakley and Sweeting, Lewis was indicted for murder and aggravated assault.

During the trial, several witnesses whose testimony would supposedly prove Lewis’ guilt had altered their stories initially given to investigators.[citation needed] Their testimonies were supposed to show that Ray Lewis hit, kicked or stabbed someone, and that he even admitted as much afterwards. Instead, the vast majority of testimony had either been inconclusive, or else supported the defense’s contention that Lewis acted solely as a peacemaker, trying to prevent a tragedy that he would be tied to and potentially hurt his career. According to ESPN legal analyst, Alan J. Baverman, "as to Ray Lewis, there is no evidence that he assisted anybody in a stabbing or encouraged anybody to do a stabbing which would make him a party to felony murder, malice murder, or felony assault with a knife."[17]

Lewis's attorney arranged with prosecutors to dismiss the murder charges if Lewis pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of obstruction of justice[18] in exchange for him testifying against Oakley and Sweeting. Lewis accepted the plea bargain and was sentenced to one year of probation. He was not suspended by the NFL but was fined US$250,000, a league record at the time.

Oakley and Sweeting were acquitted of the charges in June 2000. No other suspects have ever been arrested for the crime.

The following year, Lewis was named Super Bowl XXXV MVP. However, due to the controversy, he did not get the endorsements or the Disney World trip offered to recent MVP recipients. The signature phrase "I'm going to Disney World!" was given instead by quarterback Trent Dilfer.

On April 29, 2004, Lewis reached a settlement with four-year-old India Lollar, born months after the death of her father Richard, preempting a scheduled civil proceeding. [19] Lewis also reached an undisclosed settlement with Baker's family.
Wiki of course.

Is Mrs JM still an Eages fan? Philly is only about 90 miles south of New York - You could take her to the Linc!!!! ;) :hi:

She has a real lack of interest in any sport which is probably why at a push she chose Philly ... :o ;)

Swanny32 24-07-2009 01:37 PM

Cruising for a bruising Jaz!

Swanny32 24-07-2009 01:38 PM

At least she was sensible and didn't choose those gutless cowgirls!

Oooooh, I feel some negative rep coming my way!

jazman 24-07-2009 01:54 PM

You're lucky Swanny, I don't do negative rep! :p

But I agree to a certain point, we were gutless in the final regular season game at your place last season ...

Swanny32 24-07-2009 02:09 PM

Now there's an understatement if I ever heard one!

Do negative rep now?? :p

nookiebear 24-07-2009 02:55 PM

You know you both chose badly, right? ;)

Swanny32 24-07-2009 03:04 PM

Not as bad as you though!

nookiebear 24-07-2009 03:16 PM

A while back I mentioned the Redskins giving a fella called Mike Williams a go. He's O-line, a right tackle.

He was the No4 pick in the 2002 draft for the Bills and was a major bust after a couple of seasons.

He's been out of the game since 2007 injured, and his weight ballooned to 450lbs.

He's been given a chance to get back in the game and has earned a place on the pre-season roster and now weighs 340lbs!

He's only 29 and it'll be interesting to see if he makes it into the final squad and gets some playing time. The Redskins like what they see in him already apparently. He clearly had talent but his career nosedived.

I like this kind of story :)

So my brothers girlfriends Mum just got back from Philly. She went past the Linc and took some nice pictures for me and also bought me back a Philly shirt (which I requested only 2 days before she came home). So she gets back home about 10pm last night and I get a phone call from my brother,

Stu: "I have got your Jersey, guess how much?"
Me: "$80?"
Stu: "Take $50 off that!"
Me: "Oh, wow, that's pretty cheap, how come?"
Stu: "She went to a new shop just opening and they had a big sale"
Me: "Is it real?"
Stu: "Looks like it to me"
Me: "Sweet, bring it round"

So Stu and his bird come round with the jersey, I was so excited about getting a Jackson jersey, thought it would save Elliott having to bring me one back, I could start wearing it with pride and would mean I don't wear my Westbrook jersey so often. One look at it and I knew it wasn't real, no tag at the bottom, no reebok logo's, numbers are too big, no air holes, no NFL crest on the collar, collar wasn't even green, it was all black!!

It's the thought that counts though so I was still very grateful and coughed up the £20. Problem is now i'm stuck with a shirt that I don't really want and I have to pay a further £50 for a shirt to send to Elliott. C'est la vie!

A pic.

Anyone want it for £20?

Latvian Eagle 25-07-2009 01:13 PM

NFL.com are such asses! I asked them to send the shirt to Elliott's gf under the name "My name" C/O Elliott and they cancelled the order! :veryangry So I've just ordered the Seahawks home (Houshmanzadeh) and road (Tatupu) from the Seahawks direct. Can't be bothered to bugger about. I'd have gone through Football Fanatics but they only have the White Hawks jersey in Large or bigger.

elliott 25-07-2009 01:53 PM

I was going to say, just put your name on it and I'll warn my GF about it.

I normally just put her name on stuff anyway.

Swanny32 25-07-2009 02:03 PM

Elliott can you drop me your address in the states and i'll make sure my jersey is with your girlfriend by the time you get out there.

Ta

New DC for us then, wonder what will happen when JJ recovers and wants to get back into the game. Will be interesting to see if we are blitz orientated as we were last season.

Training camp started today as well! Not long to go!! Wooooo
