I'm slightly in awe of Costa Coffee Baristas, it has to be said. I love the way they never seem to run out of utensils and can make so many coffees in such a small, confined space.

If we're revisiting LA(X), I still think the full 'Los Angeles' is more polite and humble, and becoming of someone not born there; 'LA' sounds puffed up and pretentious.

London Taxi drivers. The venerable, rough diamond, man of the people, honest to goodness, there when Jack the Hat got shot, competition loathing Cabbie!
For a long time I have been a strong advocate of black cabs, but I got bitten this weekend and now will take my trade elsewhere. £40 from Victoria to Tower Bridge! Given the much vaunted "knowledge" and claims to know the best routes, my man still waited until £15 was on the clock, a mile up Victoria Street, just outside 1VS in fact to suggest he might try another route. So we skipped around Whitehall, but down Northumberland Ave on to Embankment. There we processed in the roadwork infested snail paced jam until Tower Hill. Those road-works on VS and Embankment did not spring up that morning and he knew full well it was the longest route. I hope the extras he made from me justify the loss from his colleague, from now on. Apparently it was Boris' fault. I didn’t realise he had shut every single road in London, except the one which takes the longest and permits arrogant cab drivers to trouser the benefit. Addison Lee, it turns out, would have been £15 with pick-up from the public car park at the Gatwick Express gate / Victoria Place, next to the very taxi rank I used. This experience led me to try Uber and I see with the Hackney Carriage’s days are numbered. |

I have had a look on the PCO website and there is a line about devious routes. While the route taken was direct, it was not the quickest option at all and the issues wre not spontaneous. This is the first time I have had poor service, and fundamentally have accepted the slight premium in cost for ease of use and trust in their proffession. |

Admittedly, that was in about 1999, so well after Jack the Hat was stabbed. |

The level of ignorance on this thread about east-end villains.
Anyone in the know as we say in this manor could tell you that Jack The Hat ended up brown bread (I couldn't find the correct rhyming slang for stabbed) some other place innit. It was George Cornell what was shot down The Blind Beggar know-what-I-mean guv. |

Now, for one, the prices are M&S prices, so are a bit high. I would hate to see their store wastage. On the other flip-side, I can see the above becoming a problem during the day. |

When I reached the till about 5 mins later, they were about to report my car as having driven off without paying, even though you could still see it 20 feet away from the window! Won't be doing that again. There are already fewer petrol stations around here than 20 years ago, so I now take the view that if these little shops help keep the remaining stations profitable, then that's preferable to more closing and then we all have to drive further to fewer sites. |
Revisionism.
ie People claiming the Krays were alright as soon as they died, despite the evidence suggesting they were violent mockney twats. |

I was told that fuel is making them money, and the stuff in shops is often seen as pricey so it didn't do so well either, so they approached M&S and a partnership was born. When I popped in to the one on Godstone Road, Whyteleafe, last week, it was very quiet, although this was at 1am. The stuff they have in there is very supermarket-esque, so they clearly want it to run like a convenience shop, but I wondered how much wastage they must have, and could see that, if people did buy their shopping there, it could indeed cause a problem outside. Also, I did think, not everyone can afford M&S prices. That being siad, they had some nice stuff in there. I bought some Davidstow Cheddar and bacon topped sausage rolls. They were delicious and very nourish. I am inclined to know what other people think. |
