“Tear here”

You mean that place that’s completely impossible to tear, meaning you have to go to the other end which also doesn’t tear? The scissors are nowhere to be found, and next thing you know you’re covered in shredded cheese

Or you scratch your worktop using a sharp knife to 'tear here'.

i was in the union at work before and the representatives were like a chocolate fireplace when i needed them so i thought i would save the money.I found the reps only doing it for their own self interest.

Anyway if it comes to mass redundancies being in a union has no sway in who is picked. They might be able to get you a couple of more quid.

Also found out that volunteers are in still working even though HR said they should not be.

i.e. There is nothing wrong with asking for voluntary redundancies and compulsory redundancies are covered by that legislation including protections.

So I assume you mean the temporary covering of parts of jobs while long term workforce on furlough counting as constructive dismissal. But they haven't been dismissed and in these circumstances they are included in a clearly defined programme of furlough. Unless they literally put 10 on furlough and brought in 10 to do 100% the same thing and that seems unlikely. TBH I doubt that's constructive dismissal, more of an abuse of the furlough programme TBH. The rub would only come if when the furlough ended they weren't expected to get their old jobs back and instead expected to do something else or go through the voluntary/compulsory redundancy process.

I am not so much arguing, more thinking out aloud about what you said. (unusual I know :))

There are roughly 35 people been furloughed in our department and there are about 7-8 volunteers who come jn part time. They are expecting people to volunteer in our department for redundancy.Problem being these volunteers also help when we are at work so got no clue whats going on up in the hr department and management.

The worse packets are those little Soy Sauce packets you get with Chinese take-out.

The force required to actually tear them results in spraying the Soy Sauce everywhere but on your food.

Plan B is to use a serrated knife if there is one handy, but in my experience the result is pretty much the same.

It's almost a shock when one actually tears successfully without any drama.

Don't even get me started on those little tubs of milk they have on the table in cafes and restaurants. Guaranteed spillage when the little tab finally pulls away.

strawberry mivi 16-06-2020 04:35 PM

We went to the States and ordered a Chinese take-away whilst in LA.
We were very disappointed that it didn't come in those tall square containers we see all the time on TV, just the normal plastic trays with lids.
We was robbed.

strawberry mivi 16-06-2020 04:35 PM

I believe, and will have to look it up, but they stopped using the tall square ones because of the little metal handles on them. People were putting them in the microwave and all hell was let loose.

Sorry I got a bit tied up in the factual bit while of course you are living it - far harder. Apologies if it read a little cold.

I am filling in the gaps from afar but I suspect that it's as simple as your permanent roles count for furloughing support and those temp employees don't. So this way both sets remain funded. A win for the business, permanents and temps in what are difficult times. Easy for me to say and I have no context of how good/bad an employer you have but those arrangements don't seem unreasonable. It's what happens next I guess. If they are looking for redundancies etc. then obviously things aren't in great shape due to the situation or perhaps they are taking advantage of the situation to make changes - I have no idea. For some - taking redundancy and moving onto something else can be timely (I have a number of friends that started up their own businesses that way) but if that's not the case then it's always stressful. A lot will change over the next 12 months that will show quite how damaging the global reaction to this has been. Hopefully it will all go well for you, the company and other employees but sadly that can't be the case universally. Fingers crossed.

I noticed lately the country that brought you, 'Have a nice Day", "What's up?" and "How y'all doing?", has progressed to the equally annoying and unanswerable, "How's your day so far?".

I assume this can only be used before noon?

Sharkba1t 17-06-2020 05:53 PM

While ive been working from home my PC is set up in the front of the house and i look on to the street (in Beckenham) every day.
I've seen quite a lot that annoys me but 2 things stand out :
1. Gangs of kids on bikes cycling down the middle of the road and giving it large to all and sundry
2. Worse than 1, imo, are these arseholes on motorised scooters on the pavements. I've seen a few and they are travelling pretty fast - looks like 15mph and above. Now, if someone steps out on to the pavement from their house they will be flattened by these arseholes.

I'm pretty sure there is a lot of clandestine hair dressing going on out there.

I got my hair cut yesterday (first time since Feb 21st). All above board and within the recommendations of the State and City.

I asked the girl that cuts my hair (and owns the salon) when she started up again, and she said, "I never stopped, I just sneaked people in here one at a time and had people pay by cash and had the door locked".

Pretty much as I suspected as in my post above, and I'm sure not unique.

Went for a posh tapas with the current Mrs Maidstoned yesterday, ask for the menu and was told to scan a QR code on the table which linked to their online menu. Bloody awful and difficult to read. This also ensured lots of kerfuffle from other diners around us as they had to be instructed to download a QR reader app to the phone.

Next up is a foil covering on a bottle of coffee creamer. First it’s necessary to unscrew the plastic spout to access the foil covering, which has an extra semi circle shaped piece indicating that you merely need to pull to remove the foil.

This turns out to be nothing more than a cruel game to wear out your fingers and cause your nails to serrate your fingertips as you grip tighter than a Manchester United fan watching a Champions league group decider on ITV.

Confounded, you are left with no other choice but to stab the foil with a spoon, thereby contaminating the creamer with things far worse than anything the foil was protecting you from, and foil fragments as you desperately try to peel the million shards off the spout of the bottle

Fatboy 20-06-2020 08:40 AM

Authorities telling everyone to wear face coverings on public transport and within the train stations and then you see the Police walking around the stations with no coverings at all.

Next up is a foil covering on a bottle of coffee creamer. First it’s necessary to unscrew the plastic spout to access the foil covering, which has an extra semi circle shaped piece indicating that you merely need to pull to remove the foil.

I have yet to have any success pulling up or on that semi circular thing on any product that has them.

Like you this usually ends up with a stab through with a knife and picking away at the foil with my fingers, which result in fingers getting covered in whatever sticky stuff is in the bottle.

That ******* "Last Of Us 2" trailer.

**** off with that ******* song.

Love the Beach Boys but incessant SKY Mobile adverts featuring 'Wouldn't It Be Nice' are wearing me down :hmph:

Especially when you consider its about underage sex.

Having ESPN here showing every Premier game except Palace is quite miffing after the long lay off.

Still it is the result that counts...

I know BBSers come from all walks of life, so if there are any out there whose job it is to put the sachets in Pot Noodles, can I ask to make sure you place them on top, not bloody stuck in the middle so you have to go digging inside the pre prepared mixture to retrieve it, knocking the powder all over your kitchen surface in the process and having loads of powder and a dried pea stuck to a your hand. The one today was lodged in and needed every bit of strength to free.

Ruins the whole ease and stress free nature of the Pot Noodle experience.

PeterH 20-06-2020 10:18 PM

That dried pea chaffs a bit later when you are rubbing one out...

Dear Maidstoned Eagle

My good lady wife likes to see 'Morris Dancers' perform.
Not my 'Cup of tea'. Many moons ago in Woodstock, she insisted watching a dance troupe perform whereas I just wanted to return to our hotel for a dip in the pool.Ruddy annoying.

People on social media declaring TV and film as ‘problematic‘ because they have noticed something that retrospectively doesn’t fit with their world view.

Queer eye is ‘problematic’ because they sometimes feature Trump supporters. Rupauls drag race is ‘problematic’ because the white queens get more followers on Twitter than the black ones. Etc.

Poorly constructed effigies and badly drawn murals.

Look, I'm not questioning the validity of your cause. But don't make me play a guessing game when I'm trying to work out what you're protesting/defending.

Take some f**king pride in your work.
