You just don't know. A fresh start at a new team with new ideas could be just what a player needs. It has happened plenty of times before and will again.

Cedric Benson comes to mind from last season.

Swanny32 12-03-2010 10:11 AM

Ced Benson was quality last year, I like him.

Unfortunately there are also those players who are destined to be backup players and will never be anything more than that, Fargas and Baskett strike me as those kinds of players.

jazman 12-03-2010 10:37 AM

But back up players in NFL are so different to any other sport in my view. Just like you have a running back just for 3rd downs ... back up running backs probably see more action than most other back ups to be honest. The worst back up has to be at quarter back. There are exceptions though like Philly last season but it's normally the case where the back up rarely gets a look in.

I still shiver when I think of Romo getting injured the season before last and Brad Johnson filled in ...

ardeo 12-03-2010 11:39 AM

We're also looking at a number 2 RB, as Shady will definitely be number 1, and we have Weaver who will probably see more carries. I think Fargas did a decent job for the Raiders and would do a decent job for us. Think Baskett would add a bit more height, but we're not really going to mess around with our top 3 WRs: Jackson, Maclin, Avant. Have lost Brown and can't guarentee much from Curtis so do need another WR as back up.

Swanny32 12-03-2010 12:41 PM

It's a shame because I like Curtis but can we really afford to have a player like him on our roster, he can't have played more than 2 or 3 times for us last season, I hope his contract reflects that.

As with the RB situation, we do need a bit of experience in the backfield so Fargas would suit more than a draft pick but I think I'd rather draft someone and know that you'll have someone that Reid can mould into the player he wants rather than Fargas who has just turned 30 and we all know what happens to running backs when they hit 30.

LT has left Minnesota without a deal and is on a plane to NYC to discuss terms with the Jets.

I mentioned that rumour yesterday .. ;)

And it seems rookie TE Martelius Bennet has spoken out of turn at the Cowboys which has encouraged a prompt retort from owner Jerry Jones ... :D

The reason running backs output decreases after 30 is that they physically can't maintain the same number of carries. Fargas has never had a massive workload so shouldn't be worn down too much and is only running back number 2, so won't even have a big workload with us, maybe 5-10 touches a game. We've got Shady as our RB of the future so don't see why we need another one. Would much rather invest our draft picks in areas we have ageing players rather than as back up to a 1 year pro.

Yes, but in terms of his job what he did with the Colts last year is more relevant. Especially the kick off to the second half of the Super Bowl.

pauldrulez 12-03-2010 04:13 PM

Don't play him on Special Teams then :D

Look at Matt Forte.

Can't give a guy too many carries if you want them to last. If you give Fargas/Weaver a 1/3 of the carries, it'll help you in the long run.
