Not knowing much about how the NFL works behind the scenes, could anyone tell me what's happening with the Panthers?

They've let some veterans go, including Brad Hoover, who's a bit of a hero in these parts, and plan on replacing them with cheaper, younger alternatives. They didn't get anyone of note in free agency, and don't really have any decent draft picks.

Rumours have it they're clearing the decks because of this potential salary cap thing, which of course I barely understand.

To confuse matters more, coach John Fox is a 'lame duck' coach in his final contractual year. Are they running down the squad for an incoming coach, so he can effectively start from scratch? I keep hearing rumours about some bloke called 'Cowher'.

And most importantly, does it mean the Panthers will be even more shit this season than they were last?

Pretty much. Along with there being no cap there is no salary floor. Some teams are expected to try and save money this way, the Panthers being one of them from what I understand.

The Bucs done it a year early last year as well.

Panthers should try and get young this year with the draft.

A few other teams across the league will be doing the same.

If I was Carolina, i'd consider trading one of the 2 Running Backs. You'll get a first for one or the other. Could be worth it though. I reckon there'll be another 4 or 5 decent (900-1200yd) guys drafted in Rounds 3-7 this year. You could keep Stewart and get a bigger back in the 4th. Or keep Williams and pick up a 3rd down back in the 3rd, 4th rounds.

This is a big year for prospects, if i'm a re-building team, i'd be trying to get into this draft and get lower round guys.

Possibly, but I think that would be potentially a bad move for the Panthers, who are so dependent on their running game. It's pretty much a given that either or both of Stewart and Williams will get injured at some point in the season, and Steve Smith is the only outstanding WR we have.

I'd say a WR is the priority offensively, especially if Matt Moore starts throwing the ball more than Delhomme (RIP) does. Especially if those throws are going towards Panthers players rather than the opposition. For a change.

Who says they're trying to win though? If they wait until after the draft they can arguably trade one, get a first round in 2011 and not have to pay first round money this year. Just sayin'.

It's odd this year as no-one knows if there will be football next year. Or if there will be a rookie cap.

Lots more people will be cut as bonuses become due and they decide to take them vs having them up against the cap in 2011.

But, he'll cost less than a rookie would and he has been in the NFL and will have knowledge of some sort of NFL system anyway.

If the Seahawks are out of the race for the West this year with a few games left, then this guy will get a go.

Competing in a mock draft on a different site, and i'm the Steelers.

Got to pick 18 and CJ Spiller was still on the board.

I took him as best player available ahead of Mike Iupati who would have filled a need.

Most teams need 2 good back and this would give the Steelers a top 5 running game in the league and a better return game as well as allow Mendenhall to have a break.

Iupati is a Guard who could be a Tackle, and the highest Guard taken in the draft was Hutchinson at either #11 or #17.

Trades seems to have died down a bit now, I guess everyone is getting themselves set for the Draft in a months time.

Tebow does seem to be getting a lot of coverage on his knew throwing technique, appears as though there are going to be a couple of teams after him in the draft, I still don't think he'll get taken until at least the 3rd round if not the 4th.

Jags will take him in 2nd round if they manage to get a pick there.

If they take him at #10, take that franchise off them

Mike Bell now officially an Eagle. Good signing as backup to McCoy and more a power runner than has been seen in Philly for a loooong time.

Yep, I'm happy with Bell, did really well when he was called upon early last season with the Saints, how much we'll use him though remains to be seen, our running game has been poor for a few years now.
