Bill Barnwell tries to see where Joe Flacco's playoffs compares to other QBs. Still crazy to look at that playoff statline for Joe Montana in 1989.

Like Man U, their success over the past 20 years is what has set them apart from many franchises. In 1992, the year I first properly picked a team to "follow", they went 2-14. Two years earlier (1990), they'd gone 1-15 and 6 out of 7 seasons after that were losing seasons.

The success has only been recent with only 8 play-off games in the 20 years prior to 1990, including one SB loss.

Anyway, the reason I picked them initially was because I enjoyed watching the games in the snow and the "England" part of the name drew me in, the irony of which was lost on me as a 14 year old but is now quite amusing :D

Since then I've seen them play three times - twice in Foxboro and once in the Meadowlands, all three matches in the same season when Brady was out injured. In other words, I've not yet seen the second best QB ever, which is a shame and something I'll have to rectify quickly. I have seen about 15 NFL games in the US, in 14 different stadiums, as well as visiting about 10 other stadiums outside of game days... but going to NE feels special and is something I miss not being able to do regularly.

I feel your pain, I've only been to the Linc twice now but I love the place, would love to own a season ticket and live nearby, however shocking we are, such a great atmosphere in and around the stadium. Alas, I have to live in the UK unfortunately.

Oh and my trip to the Metlife Stadium for the Jets season opener against the Ravens.....awesome experience, fantastic stadium, but nowhere near as good as the Linc for atmosphere.....and the Jets fans are *****.

If you had gone to Veteran's Stadium instead, I'd doubt you'd be an Eagles fan now.

I got into NFL while at university - there were a few Americans there and I was dragged along to a sports bar to watch Super Bowl XXXV. I loved the pantomime surrounding it all and looked around for a team.

I had a JD poster on my wall in halls, and the name sounded good, so I went with it. The Yanks were Dolphins, Pats and Cowboys fans, so I couldn't choose them. :clown:

NEW ORLEANS -- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Sunday's 34-minute blackout won't impact the city of New Orleans' chances of hosting another Super Bowl.

"I fully expect that we will be back here for Super Bowls," he said Monday morning. "And I hope we will be back. We want to be back."
Caption contest! What should my reply to this be?

Did most of you who properly support a side just pick one, for fairly arbitrary reasons? I'm guessing most don't have geographical or family reasons like in soccer.

Isn't it just a bit odd to pluck a team out like the Patriots and just say that's my team? Isn't that just as bad as Asians or North Americans supporting Manchester United (something that is regularly mocked on here and amongst English soccer fans)?

Since that day I have followed the Dallas Cowboys which has lead me into following all the Dallas teams (Mavs, Stars, FC Dallas and Texas Rangers) ...

Jaz and myself have already established that we were both watching this game, way back when. We figured it was 1982, right Jaz? I chose the 49ers and have stuck by them ever since. It helped a lot that the first city I lived in, in the USA, was SF during the 90's :p
Accordingly I am also a Giants fan (baseball Giants) so this year was sooo close to the double.

I don't know how the Ravens were lucky? I think it was more due to the fact 49ers defense was incredibly poor for the most part. They were awful... It wasn't luck that made Joe Flacco and Jacobey Jones look like absolute stars, it was absolute rubbish defense.

Then again, Ravens had a poor defense too...

Yes fella, 81 or 82, not been able to nail it down. Bloody long time ago now!

Unlucky with #6 ;) :D

As one Redditor points out, the last four Super Bowl winners have all been the opponent when the Eagles started yet another disappointing season at Lincoln Financial Field. The Baltimore Ravens lost to Philadelphia 24-23 in Week 2, yet they were still able to join the New York Giants, Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints (all winners over the Eagles, by the way) in the line of eventual champions.
The Eagles are scheduled to host Dallas, N.Y. Giants, Washington, Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City, San Diego and Arizona in 2013.

Harbaugh later balked at another play in which he believed the Ravens should have been called for offensive pass interference. He also had a major problem with what he perceived to be offensive holding when the Ravens took an intentional safety with 12 seconds left in the game. Punter Sam Koch ran around in the end zone for a few seconds to run down the clock, and Harbaugh didn't like anything about that.

"I still haven't gotten an explanation when they took the safety -- the Ravens can't tackle us and hold us. It's good scheme on their part to hold as many people as they can, but they teach people to basically tackle when you're taking a safety. But not one holding penalty was called. It was very curious, and I never got an explanation on that stuff."
Cause it would have been a safety anyway. An awesomely brilliant call by John Harbaugh to have his players tackle the 49ers.

Never been especially close to my dad, but in the occasions I did see him in the '80's he'd show me tapes of NFL games (believe highlights of one were broadcast every week over here), and rave about Dan Marino even though he was a Giants fan. I loved the Dolphins' uniforms and thus an obsession was born.

Naturally, they've sucked almightily ever since.

Picked Eagles for a few reasons, mainly to do with Palace and watching them on tv when I was getting into NFL.

Think it is different to supporting football teams as Jaz said, no real American football teams that you can properly support and watch over here. Also think that in general NFL fans have various reasons for supporting teams, but very few would ever be just glory hunters. Only Pats have been consistently successful in the last 10 years, but noone is dominant in the same way as the big clubs in the Premiership.

It is slightly strange however having a team to support really helped me get into NFL more though as I went from watching the superbowl and occasional games to watching Eagles games to watching loads of games!

Edenbridge Eagle In Exile 05-02-2013 07:15 AM

Why the Eagles? ..... Well in no particular order..... Randall Cunningham, Buddy Ryan, The Vet, Disliking the Cowgirls and Gunts, The Eagles nickname ;) , and oh my name is Phil!!!

If the Bears can keep Cutler upright, you'd have to fancy them next season, along with the Giants and possibly as an outsider, the Skins. The rest of that lot don't have a hope in hell.

saxoneagle 05-02-2013 12:51 PM

None of those will get near the Superbowl.

jazman 05-02-2013 12:52 PM

It's the Cowboys time ;) :moo:
