A lot of talk of Oakland liking Geno Smith so you never know. Certainly Smith and Barkley seem to be the only two with any chance of making the First Round.

The Raiders are nuts if they take Geno Smith at 3rd pick. What the Chiefs have done in trading for Alex Smith is astute.

Raiders should use this pick more wisely (I know this is the Raiders but still). They pretty much need improvement everywhere; for me, get one of the high ranked OT's to boost their OL, giving Palmer/Pryor/someone else some kind of protection.

Likelyhood is, this is not a one year fix, so they will likely have a very high pick again next year. Providing the QB class is better (Not sure about this to be honest but guessing there must be better out there coming through), draft one next year. Wasting a first round pick this high on Geno Smith is incredibly risky.

And from a 49ers point of view, looking forward to seeing what we do with so money picks at hand. I do like Tyrann Mathieu; think he is a project but has great value and lots of upside. Plus, he is very handy on punt returns...

Arizona are apparantly all over Barkley; problem with Barkley is his 2011 season was fantastic, when he had Matt Kalil in his Offensive Line. Take Kalil out of the equation in 2012 and you see a different, more inconsistent Barkley. And Arizona's Offensive Line is a train wreck.

Nice move by the Chiefs. What ever happened to the QB from the Brady school of QBs Matt Cassell? Without a trace ...

It does depend which Alex Smith turns up though. If its the one that got the Niners through the first half of last season (was it that many?) then they can build a team around him perhaps ...

I don't know about anyone else but in the draft I'm always disappointed with a d-line or o-line pick whether they are sensible or not. It's the glory picks that everyone looks out for - QB, WR, RB ....

This looks like the weakest draft since I started following the combine in the skills position.

I'm guessing this will be the lowest draft in terms of QB's/WR's/RB's selected in the first round.

I'd put the over/under on QB/RB/WR at 4.5.

Dunta Robinson, John Abraham and Michael Turner have all been released by the Falcons. So you Panthers fans can get excited about Turner coming to your team.

Quote:

We've been hearing for weeks that the Atlanta Falcons were poised to move on from RB Michael Turner this offseason; his contracted salary didn't match up with what his production had been as of late. So it's not surprising to hear that they made the release official on Friday. What was a bit surprising was the word from NFL Insider Adam Schefter that not only Turner, but also DE John Abraham and CB Dunta Robinson have been released. So now what?

According to Brian McIntyre of Yahoo! Sports, the trio of releases clears $18.65 million in cap space. This could mean several things.

First off, this likely clears the way for the Falcons to re-sign some of the important impending free agents in their secondary: fellow CB Brent Grimes and S William Moore. Furthermore, it provides them with some extra space to target some pass-rushers in free agency (to help pick up the slack in a post-Abraham world). We've seen Dwight Freeney and Osi Umenyiora mentioned as possibilities, but there's also younger (and therefore, more expensive) options such as Cliff Avril and Anthony Spencer.

There's also the nuclear option: instead of re-signing Grimes, they could make a move on Darrelle Revis. They've now cleared some extra cap space, and for a team looking to make the next step to the Super Bowl, getting their hands talons on the game's best CB could provide that boost. We saw in 2011 with the Julio Jones trade that they have no problem mortgaging future drafts in exchange for a player that can help immediately. Stay tuned.
Michael Bennett and Michael Johnson are also in the from on the DL. There is no way the Falcons will get Cliff Avril because he's too nutty and Anthony Spencer will be too expensive.

Teams with least room this am: CAR $8 mil over cap; NO $5.5 mil over; WASH $3 mil over; AZ $1.2 mil over; OAK $800k over.

Teams with most cap room this am: CINCY $54 million under; CLEV $48 mil; MIAMI $47 mil; INDY $44.5 mil; PHIL $33.5 mi; TB $32.5 mil.
I bet TB is still on this list of the most cap room once the season starts.

It absolutely beggars belief that Carolina is $8m over the cap and Cincinnati is $54m under. Bonkers!

It’s not as dramatic as the major releases the Atlanta Falcons made Friday morning, but the Carolina Panthers are working toward getting under the salary cap.

They have restructured the contract of safety Haruki Nakamura to free up about $500,000. They also reportedly have restructured the contract of tight end Greg Olsen to free up about $2 million.

The Panthers dropped Nakamura’s cap figure from $1.633 million to $1.115 million. That was accomplished by dropping Nakamura’s base salary from $1.3 million to $715,000. But Nakamura got a $65,000 signing bonus and the Panthers also added a workout bonus of $35,000 to his contract. The new deal also allows Nakamura to earn up to $300,000 more if he meets unspecified playing-time standards. Nakamura had been under contract through 2014, but, under the new deal, he becomes a free agent after the 2013 season.

The Panthers dropped Olsen’s base salary from $3.75 million to $750,000, but gave him a $3 million bonus.

When the Carolina Panthers signed Ron Edwards coming out of the lockout in 2011, the thinking was he’d give the team the run-stuffing defensive tackle it had lacked since Kris Jenkins left after the 2007 season.

It never came even close to working out that way and now Edwards’ time with the team is over. The Panthers announced Friday afternoon that they have released Edwards. The move frees up $2.4 million for a team that’s working to get under the salary cap.

They should have dropped Nakamura's cap figure to $0 and told him to **** off!

I thank my lucky stars for Friday Night Lights. On season four and still hasn't got boring. Absolutely compelling. I won't spoil it for anyone not up to speed.

Joe Flacco and the Baltimore Ravens have agreed to a six-year, $120.6 million contract that makes the quarterback the highest-paid player in NFL history, a source familiar with the deal told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The two sides will work on the contract language this weekend, and Flacco is expected to sign the deal Monday in Baltimore, sources told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen.
Wonder what Matt Ryan will get: 6 years, $107M?

AddiscombeEagle 02-03-2013 09:11 AM

Flacco done, now the important part of trying to keep Ellerbe

It is an amazing show. I watched all of them ages ago but am enjoying watching them all over again. There's an episode in two weeks time that will really pull at the heartstrings!

I'm still watching it, haven't missed an episode yet and the wife loves it as well. They seem to have tackled pretty much everything from Child abuse to racism though, every episode something drastic seems to happen. Loving it though.

jazman 02-03-2013 08:24 PM

What they have done story line wise for this fourth season really kept the interest going. I do wonder where they would go but they have played a blinder.

Clear heads, full hearts, can't lose!

Will Flacco join the ranks of legends who cement their HOF status following a big pay day, leading their team through a golden era almost single handedly.....or join the ranks of those who made the most of securing a bloated contract at precisely the right time, getting overpaid and crippling their team's prospects in the process?

Personally I think he didn't get the recognition he deserved for some time, but the pendulum seems to have swung too far the other way now. I can't see him commanding the kind of respect that say a Manning or a Brady does, and attracting big names perhaps willing to take a bit of a paycut in the hope of getting a ring opposed to getting a big payout at no hopers like the Jets.

I agree with all of what you said!
