Ravens head coach John Harbaugh fielded some questions about Ray Rice during his press conference at preseason camp today, and he decided to invoke "the children," for some reason.

After referring to Rice as a "heck of a guy," he explained how Rice receiving just a two-game suspension and zero jail time for knocking his wife unconscious and then dragging her out of an elevator provides a lesson for kids on the way things "should be."

Quote:

He makes a mistake, alright. He's gonna have to pay a consequence. It's good for kids to understand that it works that way, and that's how it works. That's how it should be.

Rice would have been given a longer suspension if he had done the exact same thing to an opposition player on the field.

Speaks volumes to how serious the NFL takes domestic abuse.... Awful.

Someone obviously has Rice in their keeper league team!

Well, I would suggest to Roger Goodell that Bernard Pierce is a better keeper option than Ray Rice.

Panthers try to sneak sixth round RB Tyler Gaffney onto IR through waivers following a season ending injury, and guess who breaks the 'unwritten rule' of not snapping him up....:D

Hope this one doesn't bite us on the arse!

Should've IR'ed him properly then!

Also did it with Jake Ballard in 2011!

They wanted Gaffney in the 6th round, Panthers got there 2 picked earlier but it puts the Patriots in the situation of being able to let Ridley/Vereen walk at the end of the year and replace like for like with Gaffney and White (who is pulling in rave reviews in camp)

Before seeing the full breakdown, that Andy Dalton deal is mental.

If Andy Dalton wants to quiet critics of his massive deal, he’ll need to wait until the playoffs … when the big blitzes start coming

Timing is a wondrous thing! Today, hours after we published this article, Andy Dalton signed a six-year, $115 million extension with the Bengals. Consider this an argument against that deal.

Absolution 04-08-2014 04:12 PM

I don't think Dalton is nearly as bad as some people like to make out.. but the figures on that contract (initially) is a shocker.

Dalton receives a signing bonus of $12 million and a roster bonus in three days of $5 million. That's a total of $17 million out of the gates. Coupled with his $986,000 base salary (which isn't guaranteed as a legal matter but it is as a practical matter), Dalton will make $18 million in the first year of the deal.

Then, on the third day of the 2015 league year in March, Dalton earns a $4 million roster bonus. He also has a $3 million non-guaranteed base salary in 2015. That's $25 million over two years.

[...]

The rest of the base deal is simple. In addition to annual workout bonuses of $200,000, Dalton has base salaries of $10.5 million in 2016, $13.1 million in 2017, $13.7 million in 2018, $16 million in 2019, and $17.5 million in 2020.
The deal also contains escalators tied to the Bengals' playoff performances. (Cincinnati is 0-3 under Dalton.) Reaching the divisional round of the postseason earns him an additional $1 million for each remaining year; reaching the conference championship, another $500,000; for a Super Bowl win, another $1.5 million.

Hot take coming through: Andy Dalton's not going to win the next six Super Bowls, so $115 million's an imaginary figure. But what is the deal actually worth in real-world numbers? The Bengals essentially have their choice of the following deals. (Numbers are without potential playoff escalators, and include the upcoming final season on Dalton's last contract.)

Two years, $25 million.
Three years, $35.7 million
Four years, $49 million.
Five years, $62.9 million.
Six years, $79.1 million.
Seven years, $96.8 million.
