Not an annoyance at all, but a celebration.

On my BBS set up, this thread has reached 1000 pages and 50,000 posts.

That's an awful lot of skin for irksome things to get under.

Vrs 123 pages of things that make you happy. We really are a miserable lot :)

Now they are saying I have only returned one of the items... I seem to be hitting a dead end every road I take to get this sorted.

Very frustrating... I might have to just eat it. (not literally)

In fairness, I gave this another go this afternoon, and after fighting with a Bot for every decreasing circles it put me onto a human.

A rather sweet Indian sounding young lady, that I guess could have been anywhere in the world, helped me, and sorted out the issue... well says she did, we will see.

I appreciate Amazon probably gets about a million calls an hour to customer service, so they have to weed out as much as they can, but my God is it frustrating.

Or that is, always has been, and always will be the nature of the world.

Grunts like us will always be playing 10/1 odds.

TBF, borrowing from Maidstoned, 900 pages on here are dedicated to HH getting into technical difficulties. And he worked for or with NASA which isn't very comforting.
Also TBF, I am an English teacher who often makes elementary spelling mistakes, but I do have that little devil wcb on my shoulder to keep me in my place.

My count is generally commenting on things that annoy other posters.

'Sniping from the Sidelines' seems the current buzzword bingo entry on here.

I have very few annoyances.

My latest annoyance is West Ham fans singing ‘I sold my car, to Lucas Paqueta’

For me, a recipe for a good football chant should be a) a catchy, singable song b) replacement of words with a football related thing which scans well c) maintaining the rhyme of the original song, where applicable.

The Lucas Paqueta chant has lots of the ingredients, but fails on the final part of the recipe d) IT SHOULD MAKE SOME SENSE. Just because they’ve taken it from a car advert, they don’t have to stick with those words. Have the sold their car to Lucas? No. So why are they singing that they have. They could have sung ‘he’s the best by far’, which is a bit shit, but at least shows some effort and isn’t singing about an imaginary automobile transaction.

They could put David Moyes’ name in the song ‘Two Little Boys’….’David Moyes had two little toys, each had a wooden horse’ but that too MAKES NO BLOODY SENSE, so they wouldn’t sing that. So why the bloody car advert song? Terrible.

Note to self: if David Moyes does ever go down the nonce path, ‘David Moyes had two little boys’ would be an excellent chant. And an apt tribute to the songs disgraced author.

Because we had our youngest two kids later in life, with our youngest being born when my wife was 41 it's meant that we've been child-rearing for most of our married lives. Anyway finally, like finally, my youngest moved out about a week at age 24.

Meantime my second youngest has been living with us whilst her and her partner have a house built, so we've got them here for the next year at least. They've gone away for a holiday, we are alone in our place at last. Which means we can wear, say, and do what we like without any feedback, positive or negative from our offspring, a very rare thing for us....As we've been child rearing since 1983.

Anyway, we were supposedly going to a local gig tonight, got tickets the lot. This morning my missus gets an emergency call from my 2nd oldest daughter re having to child care our only grandchild... So one of the few nights we can spend together on our lonesome is thwarted again.

Not only that, the 2nd oldest daughter is coming to our place, with our Grandson on Sunday for two days.... So much for the first few days of being together on our own in decades. My youngest daughter comes back on Wednesday. We got one night alone in our own home for the first time in about 40 years!!

F me dead.

We have to leave our place to get time to ourselves... Gotta say it absolutely pisses me off. Especially as I have a hankering to walk about my place without clothes... just from the bathroom to the bedroom for xsakes!!

This is who we were supposed to see. Well I'll be going now with my friends, minus the missus. Brunswick Ballroom tonight.

We moved to the coast several years back. Just now my wife spends 30% of her time helping my daughter out in Santiago with the grandkids. And that doesn't include the time they spend here.

At one point they recruited someone from Man Utd Publicity Team to write their articles, so no surprise really. It's also all about the clicks for them too these days.

Orgasmic stuff for them!

I've met full time campervan traveller women here, that have openly admitted they did that to get away from grandparent duty, or they would be doing it full time they reckoned. How common that is I dont know, but it's definitely a thing.

I have certainly read stories of UK and US women absolutely refusing to be used as 'carer' grandmothers. To the indignation of the parents - the story usually goes along the lines of 'but we both work, how could you be so selfish'.

Somehow, I think a certain couple of got their perspective all wrong there.

In other similar cases, the couples have that arrangement but begrudge paying for it.

big bad John 09-06-2023 04:36 PM

During the crack epidemic in New York in the 80's and early 90's, it was fairly common for grandparents in the most affected areas, to solely bring up the grand kids. The fathers in most cases were either missing or in jail. Mum was out shooting up in the local galleries; unable to care for her children.

When you move house and find the previous owners have tried to take care of the wooden window frames with a lick of paint but have been unable to not paint the glass as well which looks awful and sloppy.

We once used an absolute cowboy of a decorator to paint a downstairs bathroom just before Christmas. Made such a shit job I had to redo it myself afterwards, but out of many, many ****ups he made in a room of 5 ft x 3 ft, gloss painting the window shut so it couldn't reopen was probably one of the worst.

TBF this has probably little to do with my life going forward...but...

from various NY threads. The inflationary change to the size of tips. A few years back a new ceiling of 15% seemed to be established. That ceiling moved to 20% with a sense of idignation if you didn't pay it. Now the 20% is the norm with 25% being suggested as perhaps a recommended tip.

And possibly in addition to a service charge - what's that for, laying the table?

Where does that stop?

This has started to come in on the card machines here.

This part seems to confirm what I said.

'A traditional tip pre-Covid was around 15%, with 20% tips reserved for outstanding service. But the Forbes survey shows 42% of people start tipping from 16% to more than 25% on a bill if they pay digitally. '

Yeah, life is costlier. But that is relected in the higher cost of restaurant bills. Those receiving tips at 15% should be getting more money from the higher cost of restautant meals.

Unless the post pandemic landscape has allowed restaurant owners to reduce the basic pay or the basic pay hasn't gone up in line with inflation.

.

Just before Co-vid the minimum wage went up in New York to something like 16 bucks an hour. The owners upped the price of food accordingly and the hours of workers went down. Most waiters will tell you they made more money before the wage increase. You'd be surprized how many restaurants in the heart of town now close at 9pm. The owners don't want to pay workers to work until 2am, plus with the crime at night many people are not taking subways and don't want to be out that late anymore. Hundreds of restaurants and bars have shuttered since the beginning of Co-vid and what we have now is what is being called, "Aggressive tipping." You order a bottle of water and some young aspiring actor (who's filling in time before his big break] working as a server has a feckin IPad in your face asking you how much you want to tip.

from various NY threads.

Where does that stop.

The menus with the service charge included, are known in the industry in NY as the 'English menu" It is them guaranteeing they get an 18% gratuity. It is meant to cover the customer for the tip. I do remember last year though being in a restaurant in New Hampshire and having something like 4% added, on top of suggested tip, for "kitchen Administration fees."

Is that US tipping culture the same in Hawaii?

Hawaii is outrageously expensive these days. I'm glad our visits were 20 odd years ago.

Funny you say that, I was only getting annoyed at this last week.

Kid across the street just got a new car, and it "beeps" or "honks" every time he locks or unlocks it.

I think I need to go across and tell him there is a setting where you can turn it off. Mine was doing it when I first got it.

Never quite sure what the point of it is.

It annoys me when people, for effect, put a number in brackets. I read it fine the first time.

This is a low level annoyance.

The vidiprinter put the football scores on screen and any large score would be written in text in brackets after, e.g. Palace 8 (Eight) - 0 Charlton

Unfortunately we've found we need to do this with our Vivaro based-campervan.
It has an alarm system and and internal sonar, but the sonar kept setting it off if there was anything flying around in the cab, like a bug etc, so a second press on the alarm disabled the sonar, but it also beeps. Sorry.

Note, no way to permanently disable the sonar - obviously.

It simply confirms that the car is locked. Some cars do it by folding the mirrors, and others by flashing indicators (which you may not see), and some audibly.

If you came across the street and asked me to turn it off, I'd add you to the list of annoying things on this thread.

If you donít know your car is locked by prettying the remote a few times, then you shouldnít be driving.

Or you could just try the handle to see if it's locked/unlocked.

Having said that I must disclose my car, as I suspect many are these days, only needs the "key" to be in the vicinity, i.e. in my pocket. When you pull the handle it senses you are trying to open the door and unlocks it.

I use the code on the touch pad on the door jam to lock the car when I get out... the annoying thing is, if you yank on the handle to make sure it is locked it will unlock again as you have the key in your pocket!

I found the best way is to listen for the door locking. Although I'm getting a bit deaf, so far I don't need the car's horn beeping to tell me it is locked.

Maz 11-06-2023 11:05 PM

It's not about knowing whether or not your car is locked. It's about thinking two minutes later "did I lock my car?".

I'm sure HH understands.

I don't know if this is an urban myth but a mechanic I know says so many people park up in their front garden then go inside and sling their keys on the table near the window. This is picked up by the sensors and you've got an unlocked car for the night. Many thieves are aware of this and just go around trying door handles.
