Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics

Just thought I'd start a thread for the Tokyo Olympics even though the Rio one is a year away.

Olympic Games: Bridge, chess & tug of war apply for 2020 inclusion

Quote:

  • Tug of war
  • Baseball & softball
  • Bowls
  • Sumo
  • American football
  • Flying disc
  • Underwater sports
  • Roller sports
  • Floorball
  • Korfball
  • Netball
  • Chess
  • Waterski and wakeboard
  • Bowling
  • Karate
  • Wushu
  • Snooker
  • Surfing
  • Sport climbing
  • Polo
  • Air sports
  • Raquetball
  • Squash
  • Orienteering
  • Bridge
  • Dance sport

Twilko 12-06-2015 06:01 PM

Lots of debate about the olympic stadium plans at the moment. Originals plans were for a complicated retractable roof system which they now realise will go way over budget. Spending close to a billion does seem a bit much when the country already has huge debts.

http://m.bbc.com/sport/olympics/32780640

As I missed 2012, I'd like to still be here for this. Although that would mean I'd been living here for 12 years by then which is a little scary.

maestro 12-06-2015 06:13 PM

squash should definately be in there

Less swimming, if one chap can win 7 gold medals then the events are too simular.

I'm guessing that's Karate Kid style point fighting rather than full contact Karate? with boxing moving closer to the pro sport there seems like there could be room for something like K-1 style kickboxing that would allow various Karate and Muay Thai fighters to face each other.

RobertCPFC 24-03-2020 04:11 PM

Postponed until next year.

The major stakeholders in this year's Tokyo Olympics denied on Friday a news report that the Japanese government has privately concluded the games will have to be canceled due to the coronavirus and that the host nation is seeking to host them in 2032, the next available year.

Japan, the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee each issued a denial of a report in British daily The Times.

TOKYO -- The new president of the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee stopped short of saying there would be no foreign fans at this year's Games, but she certainly hinted at it Wednesday after online talks with IOC president Thomas Bach and others.

The Japanese newspaper Mainichi reported Wednesday that the decision had already been made to exclude foreign fans. It cited only unnamed sources "involved in the discussions.''

Funk Butter 12-06-2021 04:03 AM

https://japantoday.com/category/toky...no-fans-at-all

Quote:

The question of allowing any fans into Tokyo Olympic venues is still being debated with a decision unlikely to be announced before the end of the month.

This would be just a few weeks before the Olympics are to open on July 23. Fans from abroad have already been banned in what is shaping up as a largely made-for-television Olympics.

Tokyo and several prefectures are under a state of emergency until June 20. Infections have slowed recently, but the spread of variants is still a concern that could put pressure on already stressed medical facilities.

Dr. Nobuhiko Okabe, director general of the Kawasaki City Institute for Public Health, suggested on Friday he would lean toward few fans. He spoke on a panel put together by the Tokyo Olympic organizing committee.

Who's watching the cycling?
Nothing too exciting so far. A break of eight relatively unknown riders got a 20-minute lead but it's coming down slowly but surely. The Slovenia and Belgium teams are riding at the front of the peloton.
Van Avermaet (after a big shift at the front) and Fraille have been dropped. Thomas and TGH have both crashed. It looks like Pog is riding for Rog.

kabbott 24-07-2021 07:30 AM

The Italians have accelerated and there are splits in the peloton.
Valverde has been dropped.

Oh, this is the Olympics where the BBC have lost all the coverage. Nice.

Yes unfortunately, I think the IOC sold the rights for all Europe to Discovery. I can’t see many people paying £30 to watch it though.

Was skeptical at first (mainly because every skater I've met has been a grade A twat) but skateboarding is an entertaining televised sport. Am looking forward to sports climbing another debut sport as well. Both of them are more of a sport than yachting anyway.

Woke up to the Adam Peaty Gold news which is great. Talking of defending previous Olympic golds currently watching Denmarks second match in the Handball so far, defending theirs. Egypt have actually been pretty good in recent years, have allot of large players and a pretty physical rough house play style but can still mix it up skills wise.

I read an article by a guy that was reporting on a previous Olympics. He was wandering around one day and went to check out the Team Handball. He knew nothing about it previously and was shocked to find out the US had not even qualified and then found out that they had lost every match in qualifying. He wrote something like, "How can the USA be so bad at a game that involves running, jumping and throwing?"

bubbs11 26-07-2021 10:08 AM

Quite an emotional watch.

Funk Butter 26-07-2021 10:54 AM

I don't understand these rugby rules. When a guy gets tackled, what determines whether the defense can grab the ball and when they have to just let it sit there? It seems random.

Just watching the ROC (Russian Olympic Committee) win a swimming event. Amusing to see them collect their medal and stand to attention to Tchaikovsky’s piano concerto no.1, instead of the Russian national anthem.

If the U.K. were ever disqualified, I wonder what would be played for the UKOC? Bucks Fizz ‘Making your mind up’?

Just watched the BMX on iplayer, lots of fun, but each rider has 3 semi final races so you can skip to the final at the 1hr mark. The men’s final was good, the women’s final even better. Well done to the Kye White and Beth Schriever!

Due to the funding only covering the male riders (presumably based on past performance), Beth Schriever had to crowd fund in order to get the money to travel to competitions. A fantastic effort to now be Olympic champion.

Aside from the issues over broadcast rights, the BBC Sport website isn't doing a great job of providing coverage - their whole website seems stuck in 2003.
