Scheduling is easy, innit

6 games (3 home, 3 away) against divisional rivals
4 games (2 home, 2 away) against a conference division
2 games (1 home, 1 away) against the teams in conference who finished same as you last season (if you are 1, you play other first placed teams)
4 games (2 home, 2 away) against a non-conference division (and same "geog" as the conf so if you play NFC West, you'd also play AFC West)

6+4+2+4 = 16 :p

The AFC is borne out of the AFL (a rival league). The champions of each played each other towards the end of the 60s, then they decided to merge.

Currently there are 16 teams in each conference, in 4 divisions of 4 teams. Each division winner gets into the postseason, then the 2 best remainders from each conference (so 6 in total). Top 2 records of the 6 get a bye, 3,4,5,6 playoff in the wildcard round of the playoffs.

In the regular season each team plays their division home and away (6 games), and on a rotation they play another division in their conference (4) and a division in the other conference (4). Each team then plays the other teams in the conference that finished in the same place in their division. eg if you win your division you play the other division winners in your conference (2).
