Oi ! Blue Monday is a classic, and due to lack of technology in their day, the synth had to be re-programmed every time they played the song, as there was no way of saving the info to the synth.

Not lazy, in the slightest :)

Stars on 45 are probably more influential than Kraftwerk.

Why bother? They can't sit still or shut up for more than two minutes. Just download whatever mindless drivel they want to watch onto their i-pads/device of choice and lock them in their rooms. Job done.

Reminds me of the morning I got out of bed after a multi-pint night the evening before and therefore with shall we say a sair heid, shaved (something I no longer do), reached for the aftershave and splosh splosh splosh as usual.

Suddenly it stung like buggery and then I noticed something didn't quite smell right. Looked down and saw that I was holding a hip flask instead of the aftershave bottle.

After reeling off an appropriate medley of naughty words I had to get on the 'bus smelling like a distillery at eight in the morning FFS.

Both just push keys on a machine that makes music. Both still have to write and play the music. Do you not count an electric guitar player as not having talent as well ?

I might have done this one before... but going to a very nice (read expensive) hotel in the middle of the week, and finding parents with kids of school age staying there during a time the kids should still be in school.

Nothing against kids being there, but during a time when schools out or at the weekend. That way I can plan around them. Just read some reviews on Trip Advisor, and people are so oblivious to this, and think it's grand they get cheaper rates and the kids get the pool all to themselves... bastards! Of course they get the pool to themselves... nobody else whats to be around them screaming and yelling so leave!

A few days ago (and for the past month or so) my printer was bugging me to update the "Firmware", so on Sunday I did it, and didn't think anymore about it.

Today I went to print something, and nothing... no communication between the computer and the printer (it's WiFi).

Finally figured out this evening I had to re-enter the WiFi password into the printer.

Not one single warning, or hint that this was required, or message saying it was what was required.

Bloody egg heads! And they wonder why I hate to update software.

I didn't do ANYTHING on the 2nd World War at school - it was ALL Middle Ages. I absolutely love history now but I can absolutely see how people can be very ignorant about huge periods in history, whether it be UK or World history.

I would add that many kids are quite knowledgeable about History these days thanks to the wonderful 'Horrible Histories' books/TV series/theatre productions.

Wow your about the same age as me. We did the Middle ages but the last 2 years were the build up to both WW1 and 2. That’s v odd that you didn’t study WW2 at all!

I’m in my 50s and studied it for at least a year in my History lessons.

My son is a teenager and I reckon he’s had better lessons on it than I did. There are also brilliant resources that the teachers either show in class (eg film clips on their whiteboards) or recommend to their pupils to watch/read as homework.

He’s been on a school trip to France re D Day and I honestly think he knows more about the mission than I learned.

Back in the 60s and 70s the veterans I knew didn’t like to talk about the war. Most felt the real heroes were those who died and they were grateful to be alive really. But events like today’s anniversary are encouraging the veterans to put aside their modesty and to share their stories.

Indeed. I recently got my old school books out of the loft to show my kids. I did mostly Middle Ages & then a little bit about Elizabeth I. Then I had to make choices & I took 2 languages so didn't study either Geog or History past the age of about 12/13. Weirdly, or maybe consequently, I absolutely love Geog & History now. I suspect my schools (in the late 70s/early 80s) shied away from WW1 & WW2 as it may have glorified war. Not saying I agree, just mooting the possibility.

I agree re the teaching methods of today - vastly improved resources at school. Plus, of course, if they want to do any self-research, they have t'internet.

I suspect that History teaching back then might have been a freer choice of the individual school or even teacher, until you reached the GCSE years and the teachers then had to follow the syllabus. And ofcourse it would depend on what type of school you attended.

I say this because I remember that in my first year of Senior School my history teacher taught us the bewildering events of ancient China! I’m keen on History, but oh boy that was a tough year and I can’t remember a single thing she told us.

When my parents eventually questioned the school on this, it turned out this was her personal specialist subject. My goodness her lessons were a struggle.

At least my son’s History lessons re China have been about the revolution, and therefore far more interesting in terms of modern history and politics.

I'm annoyed that I didn't say "stuntman" or something when they filled them in for my kids.
I did accidentally nick the registrar's pen on one occasion. But then he did ask me if Tomás was a Polish name. It was a lovely pen.

It’s no wonder I bunked off as much as I did.
Then my daughter got to study The Viet Nam War for A Levels, I would have aced that.

My son’s currently doing his GCSEs and his history topics have been Weimar, Civil Rights in America (eg MLK), Vietnam war and China (eg Chairman Mao). He’s really enjoyed it, and as parents we’ve slightly been on the journey with him as we’ve watched many relevant documentaries and films together.

Two of his A Levels are going to History and Politics. Those two syllabuses will add up to an interesting mix of medieval to modern history.

Oh and before anyone asks, yes he studied British history (including the Elizabethans, Tudors and the World Wars) prior to the GCSE options. They front load those topics in the early senior school years now to ensure all the pupils have an opportunity to learn about them, not just those who take the subject further.

Warwick Davies and short arses of his ilk.
I don't like their kind.

The inept bbc camera men/women who can’t film the red arrows at the DDay celebrates just zoom about the sky aimlessly. If our gunners had that level of incompetence we would never have been able to celebrate today !

I would add that many kids are quite knowledgeable about History these days thanks to the wonderful 'Horrible Histories' books/TV series/theatre productions.

I can't believe the ignorance of major historical events from my colleagues in their twenties. Mind you they seem to have the same problem with the geography of the UK.

It's been lovely watching my kids hoover up every repeat of HH. I think there were complaints about dumbing down the subject matter at the time, but at least it gets children interested.

^This, I think it must be because I've got to the age that I don't have to try and fit in any more. I've always found it fascinating, but was perhaps a bit scared of admitting it when I was younger. There have been some fantastic BBC documentaries covering the Tudor to Victorian period over the last few years. They seem to go largely under the radar.

Give yourself some credit on this, as your kids are possibly enjoying the history topics because you are too.

It’s v easy for parents to negatively influence kids by labelling history as a waste of time. They then tune out in lessons, especially if they also have a rather dry teacher.

I learnt about WW2 from my dad and him making me watch World at War documentaries etc. School was all the Tudors and Stuarts etc.

PIE "N" MASH 05-06-2019 08:32 PM

Hardly touched on WW1+2 at later school.Learn't when we lived in Hannover in the 70's(old man stationed there)and lets not forget all the black and white classic films when we were young.Seemed to be one on most sundays.

I guess it helps if your parents were around at the time. My dad was evacuated and my grandad was a merchant seaman, took despatches through China and Russia pre WW2, then served as a gunner on corvettes. He died before I was born, but had left behind about a dozen shell casings he'd made into vases and other memorabilia that my nan told me about . She also remembered watching the B of B dogfights above Kent and served Montgomery in her tabaccoists. Great for my brother and me who were obsessed with WW2.

Arguably still the greatest TV documentary series ever made - The World at War - learnt me my amazing grasp of global history 1939-45

Yep, used to remember watching it on a Sunday night, then dreading school the next day.

Pretty much the same, except he was in India and Burma fighting the Japanese, so my education was a bit skewed in that direction.

At school the only thing I remember in regard to history was The French Revolution, and even that is a bit iffy! Had to give up history to take metalwork in about the 3rd year.
