This will make me sound like a curmudgeonly old bastard, which I am. But I am getting heartily sick of all these people on social media who do one thing and do it well, but think we all want to see endless variations of it.

You have those Irish twins who dress like the Blues Brothers and do synchronised Irish jigs up and down steps and whatnot. Mildly impressive on the first viewing but I don't want to see another 20 attempts at the same thing. My timeline is now getting clogged up by the intensely annoying 'Marsh family' and their earnestly political sea-shanties. Rosie Holt with her fake Tory politician interviews. Even the Michael Spicer thing started to drag after a few goes, there's only so many ways he can spew out an exasperated insult to a dumbass politician.

I think with that sort of stuff just do it once, nail it and then walk away. You've done your bit for posterity

:D:p

... on a more serious note, silence is golden and I think you're spot on re repetition. The accepted but far from acceptable modus operandi online has fundamentally become gaslighting whatever audience posters might have and, even worse, that's pretty much the fundamental way in which AI has been put to use across many Apps and platforms. It's almost as if the online world has become a reflection of advertising manipulations, egocentricity and politics... oh, wait a minute...

I’m all for highlighting the women’s game; think it’s emergence is a fantastic thing; but all feels so force fed and actually unfair on men’s lower league clubs. Notice it on radio sport bulletins and match reports now too where the women’s game takes hierarchy over men’s games outside the Premier League.

Sheff W average 25,000 home gates, yet our sporting media are telling us that a league that averages attendance of 1,000 should take precedence in interest. It’s just weird, annoying and actually really disrespectful to men’s football and their fans outside the Prem.

It is discrimination towards women too. The last paragraph is spot on, the league is being promoted above what it actually is. Just because it is positive discrimination doesn't make it any better. Women's football should be allowed to grow in its own right, if that leads to big attendances and TV audiences then it should get the media coverage that people would want to see. Loads of people watched when England won the Euros and it earned the prime slot on BBC 1 but the WSL doesn't have the same level of interest and has done nothing to earn the coverage it gets.

I guess I'm pretty lucky... I seem to have become "friends" with a Bromley photos group which I'm actually enjoying, and also one for photos of old London.

Not sure how it all came about, but I'm OK with them. I'll admit there are a few other appearing on my timeline I could do without (Everton fans one for example), but I find they go away of their own accord if you ignore them.

churley1988 29-10-2022 02:20 PM

A Palace related one which I bet Saints fans will sing today (and Wolves did the other week); when there’s an injury and everyone is wondering if the player is ok, the away fans start singing “Where’s your Famous Atmosphere?”

Why would it be a raucous atmosphere when there’s a break in play!?

Those XFM recordings/ the Ricky Gervais show with Karl Pilkington and Steven Merchant are gold, but he’s the least amusing member of the trio.

As Bipe mentioned earlier, the Marsh family (who I only became aware of recently) are beyond awful. cf Otto English, Russ in Cheshire, Jim Felton, James O’Brian, Kevin Maguire &c. They give centrism a bad name.

Derek was shit. Extras was OK. I didn’t mind After Life but it was rather self-indulgent. I could live without most of his standup apart from the most recent one which annoyed Owen Jones types. Him, Merchant and Pilkington were screeching smug bellends on the very few times I heard them on XFM especially when they took the piss out of that woman with the massive head.

You really have to go out of your way to learn the rules and nuances to enjoy it. Simplicity is why football, basketball and cricket are so widely played, and why American football will always be a niche sport globally.

To play casually, I’d say so. Never been to India or Pakistan, but I get the impression that small children there pick it up pretty easily, without the overbearing, and arguably overfunded sports programs that get kids into Gridiron in the states.

Don't mistake simple principles which cricket has with itbeing easy to play. With all the natural ball skills in the world you still ned to learn some quite difficult techniques in order to bowl well and sore lots of runs You won't stay in Bat for long or last more than an over or two as bowler without. Try also catching a small hard ball without breaking your fingers

Playing American football (or rounders/softball or football) at park level is an absolute piece of piss. Playing cricket properly however is a bastard. I am no fan of either gridiron or rugby, but the latter seems far more complex to me. Baseball can also f~ck off but that's a different matter.

Have you ever been to a game?

If not, I would say it is worse than watching on TV... just imagine what is going on while the TV is away doing adverts and showing all the replays... the players are standing around and there is nothing happening.

Plus with all the players "pretending" they have the ball during an actual play makes it very hard to follow who actually does have the ball... especially if you are up in the nose bleed section. It all comes across as like watching young kids playing football (soccer) where they all swarm around the ball like bees around a honey pot.

But as a TV sport - I quite like it... well the forth quarter anyway.

Agree with the collage bit. I'm much more inclined to watch a college game.

It hard not to get sucked into the whole collage rivalry thing.

And yes, I guess the whole "technical stuff" is probably what I referred to as not have a clue where the ball is. All the "fakes" going on during a play etc..

(Looks like I've gone all "Trolley"!)

Guy I used to work with told me as we got in his car that he had left his phone on his car roof 4 times and each time it had smashed as he drove off. Chatted and laughed about it and as we pulled off to leave the car park, his mobile slid off the roof, down the rear windscreen and the car behind us ran over it. Numpty.

Each time he claimed on his insurance. Would love to have read his claim forms because there is no way he told them what had really happened.

I am with you regarding some dog breeders.. Having rescued a Cocker Spaniel who was used purely for breeding for 6 years. She arrived in pain petrified of her own shadow and with no idea how to be a dog. 5 months in and a lower bank account she us slowly becoming a dog.
From her accepting treats to walking on a lead to finally laying on her back to let you tickle her stomach. Each step takes time each success means so much.
She still has one op on her ear to go and thats booked. Finally totally out of pain and off tablets hopefully afterwards.
Unfortunately she will though be deaf so right now working on hand signals and words when trainimg.
I know by investigation that the breeders earnt a fortunes close to 100,000 selling her puppies. Yet could not be bothered to give her simple medical care. What infuriates me that nothing can be done that some vets work hand in hand with them and the Kennel Club least said the better.

Yeah usually found with cheap 'Wrapping Foil' rather than the more expensive thick baking / 'chase the dragon' variety.

There's a woman on our local neighborhood bulletin Board/Web site complaining that someone scared one of her kids on Halloween with their display in their front yard... something about a granny in a rocking chair and a fake dog jumping out of a dog house.

I have mixed feelings about this... Is this not what Halloween was meant to be? But also are the mother of the scared kid being somewhat of a Karen?

Bottom line is I find it annoying that they had to complain about what happen on a social media.

P.S. The woman was asking if anyone had a video of the display for what reason is not clear.

At a rough guess I'd say the answer would be a short name for Susan.

Walked into the local DIY "Homebase" equivalent last weekend, so still October (just), to buy a bulb for my extractor fan only to be confronted with Christmas and everything it entails bar roast effin turkey.
Immediate about face. There's another DIY store nearby.

Controversially, people that moan about seeing Christmas stuff in November irritate me. We get it, you think it is too early. Some of us love the build-up and although I don't put my decorations up until December, I like seeing things to buy in preparation.

Events like the World Cup get advertised months in advance and no one batters an eyelid. Haven't you heard? Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year so I'm all for seeing bits in November.

You're right - no one batters an eyelid.

That felt wrong as I typed it. That is one of those things I've said all my life and got it wrong :)

In a strange way, I miss standing outside Allders in Croydon about 45 years ago, waiting for a bus home when traffic ran along North End, going mad listening to the Christmas display on its never-ending loop.

Nothing strange about missing that.

#me, too.

And they can keep it all at the silly prices they were charging. In mid December we might get a few new baubles - that's it. (I am guessing I still don't know my missus after 20 years)

PeterH 03-11-2022 01:48 PM

TBF start of November is fair enough for Christmas or for you Brits after bonfire night. We don't have Thanksgiving.

Christmas stuff in August is beyond the pale, though.

Put a reminder in my calendar for next week to cancel my Dropbox renewal @ $200.

So bought a 3TB hard drive, realised most of my folders were marked online only since the new PC. I am a bit of a data hoarder. So I went through and deleted a load of stuff.

As in permanently as it was going to be weeks to download it all so cut out a load of old business stuff—finally got 1tb of data on my own drive.

Go through all the pages to cancel my sub to be told "we won't delete your data you just won't be able to add any more which will disable syncing WTF. Hand I only Googled it!!

Still cannot get my head around free storage of 2 TB - yet they charge a scaled fee for storage levels but it appears all you are paying for once everything is uploaded is syncing.

Alders, Grants, Whitgift centre and it’s Travelator. Staring in the window of Orange hand dreaming of owning a three button pair of school trousers. The swap shop with air pistols and catapults and all sorts of weird goodies and hours and hours in Beanos

Happy days

What, being a "Karen"?

I suppose it was originally an American thing, but I've seen the term used numerous times on this site so assumed (I must stop doing that) that it has found its way to the UK.

This link might explain it: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-53588201

Maybe there's an element of shops struggling and trying to make the most of it as well as people who potentially want to spread out when they can afford to spend? Sadly we are in times when many families won't be able to give their kids the kind of Christmas that they'd like to.
