And if they get to the Superbowl I'd support ANYONE against them.

Ever since the Superbowl where we listened for weeks about TO spouting off about how great he was only to fall flat on his face/ar$e/ego.. that's enough reason to dislike Philly, plus they are the NFL equivalent of Millwall.

saxoneagle 25-09-2008 02:33 PM

Actually, I gained some respect for Philly when they dumped TO. I still don't like them though.

Troy Brown retired.

Not a huge surprise, when the P.C was called a week ago.

Probably didnt fancy another season with the Pats, especially when Bradyless.
A true servant of the Patriots who played on everything. And deserved his Rings.
Could also still do a job on the team IMHO.

Seau will be next, another player retiring without a ring on his finger I would imagine.

Ty Law wont be back due to the big BIG money he wants either so the 3 that were rumoured a month back for the Pats.

Thats the first of my replies for today, lots of comments to quote :D

I just watched the short-cuts highlights package of the Patriots vs. Dolphins game.

I have to be honest, the television highlights you see on programs such as GameDay don't give a true perspective of just how bad the Pats (and especially Cassel) were.

The big difference with Cassel is that he doesn't just seem rushed, but he seems to gun everything. Whether it's a short 10 yard pass or a 40/50 yard pass (did he actually try anything longer than 10 yards? :D), it's all fast-paced. Where that differs from Brady is that Brady a) knows exactly when to go deep and b) seems to throw the ball in such a way that Moss/Welker can pick it off at it's highest point without the threat of it slipping through their fingers. Brady is the best in the business - Cassel is one of the worst.

The other thing is that the highlights on Gameday (or any of the other highlights shown during half-times of televised games) ignored the 3-pointers. Obviously it's because they don't have as big an impact on the scoreline (unless we're talking last minute 3-pointers :hmph: ) but they do show just how poor a team can be in the red-zone. The minute Cassel crossed that 20-yard line, his confidence just seemed to drain completely and he ran out of ideas. Porter did what he said he would do.

Take nothing away from the Dolphins - Pennington looked a better QB than Cassel, collecting yards when they needed them most. I thought the Dolphins had the whole game worked out, they knew exactly what they needed to do and implemented it perfectly. Brown looked like a power-house and I'm sure he'll do well for the Phins.

I was just incredibly surprised by how lapse the Pat's defensive line and defensive play-calling was. It was hilariously bad.

(Sorry if I've caused offence, saxoneagle and Paul, but I call it how I see it :) )

I also agree with the majority of that. Pennington is far superior to Cassel and always seems to prove a point against New England.

Matty has little-to-no pocket presence at all, he doesnt feel confident running with the ball or throwing on the run which is what K O'C is incredibly confident at.

But, he is in the team at the moment to manage the game.

Its supposed to be.. RUN, RUN, SLANT TO WELKER/LONG TO MOSS depending on Field position.

I blame the D who could not deal with it and typically Bruschi, whose job it was to play-call on the field. They looked better with Mayo there alongside Guyton/Crable with Jerod doing alot of the calling in-play but the game was gone there.

I also think that the call on Cassels sack/TD changed the game massively.

7 points instead of an sack followed by INT which means the Phins are chasing the game instead of going up the other end with bluffs, fakes and consistent passing.

The Pats made Pennington look like Peyton Manning, was it 18/20? but I take nothing away from his quality there.

Overall, the Phins deserved and took apart the worst overall performance (bar Hobbs on Special Teams) in a long time, probably since Brady took over.

Now back to my normal news postings.

Starting with some sad news.

Quote:

From Adam Schefters blog Some stories are so sad they can’t even be fathomed. One emerged out of Tampa on Wednesday.

Matthew Tryson Bryant, the infant son of Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant and his wife Melissa, passed away Wednesday morning.

Buccaneers coach Jon Gruden was unsure of details, and details are secondary right now. What mattered was that sadness enveloped Tampa.

“I would just appreciate it if we could give Matt some privacy right now,” Gruden said. “Obviously the details will come later but it’s just a horrible tragedy and I can’t explain it.

“I just ask the fans and the people that know Matt to keep him in their prayers. It will be hard for him to overcome this but we’ve got to do the best we can right now.”
RIP Matthew, football doesn't matter when things like this happen.

Here's an interesting one...

Name your (everbody) top 5 uniforms in the NFL right now...

5. San Diego Chargers White Jersey
4. Seattle Seahawks (Blue)
3. Baltimore Ravens (Purple)
2. Carolina Panthers (Light blue)
1. Cincinatti Bengals (Black with orange tiger stripes)

And worst...

5. Green Bay Packers (White with yellow trousers?)
4. San Fran / Tampa Bay (Red and gold?)
3. NYJ (Green is my favourite colour but their green uniform is putrid)
2. Indinapolis Colts white uniform is so dull!
1. Oakland Raiders, I couldn't decide which one so I'm going with both! There's just nothing about them! One is plain black, the other is plain white!

nookiebear 25-09-2008 11:23 PM

saxoneagle 25-09-2008 11:49 PM

RDSdaEAGLE 25-09-2008 11:54 PM

1. San Diego Chargers Change (White Jersey)
2. San Diego Chargers Retro (Light Blue)
3. San Francisco Change (White, Gold, Red Numbers)
4. Green Bay Packers Home (Green jerseys, Yellow trousers)
5. Denver Broncos Home (All navy, orange stripe down both sides)

And worst...

1. New York Giants Home (Blue shirts, grey trousers)
2. Denver Broncos Change (Orange shirt)
3. NYJ (Green, white stripes)
4. Arizona Cardinals (Any - they all look bland)
5. Steelers Home - (Black, yellow stripes)

Strathclyde Eagle 26-09-2008 12:17 AM

Best:

1) Chargers retro powder blue.
2) Titans predominantly navy home jersey.
3) (tie) Cowboys home and Steelers home, both classics.
5) Bears home.

Worst:

1) Lions alternate black jersey.
2) Bengals alternate orange.
3) Seahawks road white jersey (grey sleeves!).
4) Bears orange alternate.
5) Bills white away (which is still half navy).

Arguably these days the best unis are for the college teams, with of course the exception of Tennessee.

Wrong wrong wrong!

Good:
1: San Diego Home - The shade of navy is just lovely.
2: Cardinals Whites - Quite honestly, aesthetically the nicest uniform in the NFL. Nice piping, nice logo placement. Generally 10/10
3: San Diego Pre 2007 Powder Blues
4: Denver Whites - Tidy, clean. Lovely
5: Buffalo Throwbacks (with helmet too) - Just look like proper uniforms. Not like the rubbish new ones.

Runners Up: Seattle Whites. Tennessee home (powder blue). Philly black alts -fit.

Bad:
1: Dallas Cowboys Uniforms - This sums up better than I ever could. Weirdest uniforms around. And it annoys me. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...5&sportCat=nfl
2: Detroit Home & Away - They just both look rank. And especially with the black lining on the sleeve stripes. Simply rank.
3: Texans Red Alt - This could grow on me, but not yet.
4: Denver Orange Alt - Just what???
5: San Fran Home It's NOT all about the rank drop shadow. These desperately need a makeover.

Thoughts?

With regards to the Denver orange jersey isn't it a symbol of their past? I read they used to wear orange jerseys before they changed to navy in the 90s?

Personally quite like the Lions and Bengals alternate jerseys. Aren't the sleeves on the Seahawks white jersey navy blue, not grey!?

nookiebear 26-09-2008 10:21 AM

Best kits (in no particular order)

Steelers home kit (also loved those yellow retro helmets)
Ravens home kit
Chargers light blue kit (like the white helmet as well)
Oakland Raiders home kit
Miami dolphins home kit

(one more from me - Houston Oilers home kit)

Worst
Cardinals home (awful logo)
Bengals home
Houston Texans
Titans home and away
Patriots retro kit

If you're talking about jerseys not worn any more then the list is:

1) Dolphins mid-90s home (like Elliott I'm not into drop shadows either).
2) Patriots home mid-80s (I liked the red/white/blue shoulder combination).
3) Rams road, 70s-90s (subject of a post here before I think).
4) Oilers home.
5) The white Eagles jerseys of the Randall Cunningham era.

P.S. Ben and Elliott, don't laugh about the fact that the newest friend on my Facebook page is a girl called Chrystal who spells her name with an "h". I'm almost certain she's never worked for Diadora.

Looks a bit too similar to Florida State for my liking.

http://vmedia.rivals.com/images/cont...sanders200.jpg

Doing a search for this I saw a Deion Sanders/Florida State jersey. Tempting to me for a player I liked but who never played for the Fins. Could be tempted by a Barry Sanders Oklahoma State jersey as well.

Then again, the last time I was tempted to go down that route was when I was in Atlanta four years ago and thought about getting a certain Virginia Tech jersey. Looking back I'm glad gave in to that impulse.

If I got a Ronnie Brown Auburn jersey PFiA would never speak to me again, so that rules that out really.

At least the shirts don't fluctuate as much as football shirts here ... is that something that has always been the case as a rule?

Possibly my favourite of the 3 kits available and will be used for the 50th anniversary year I believe.

I have a Troy Brown shirt in that colour. (Or should I say had, since I have no idea where the hell it is)

I like it, no surprise there though.

For those interested,

http://www.patriots.com/homePAGE/

The 2nd link on the media centre is the full Troy Brown retirement announcement, an emotional exit and one that leaves no doubt that it will definitely be the end of his career. The last question is from one of his kids, how he didnt break down and burst into tears I dont know.

A great man, holds the record for receptions that will only be beaten in the next 15 years if Welker has another 2007 season and if the Pats get a new rookie WR that stays loyal to the franchise.

I must find the throwback jersey with his name on it, or buy another one.

saxoneagle 26-09-2008 02:40 PM

That uniform is horrific.

pauldrulez 26-09-2008 02:48 PM

The NFL Schedule rotation ends after the 09 season after running for 8 years and I presume it will be kept on.

Also, this is really for the Pats and Dolphins fans.

We supposedly had the easiest schedule this year with the two Western Divisions on our schedule. Although there are some long trips to the west coast.

Next year are the two Southern divisions
Colts, Titans, Jags, Texans.
Bucs, Falcons, Saints, Panthers.

Along with the two wildcard games which are probably the AFC North and South.

I personally think it will be a very hard year for the Pats with Brady next year.

So, Superbowl 2011 is ours for the taking :D

pauldrulez 26-09-2008 02:49 PM

Well,

I like the shirt with Bradys name on it, it looks better without the horrible trousers

What are you talking about wildcard games???

The schedule is:
Your division (6 games)
Another div in conf (4 games)
Another div out of conf (4 games)
Other teams in conf who finished in same position (2 games) We finished top last year so we played all the top placed teams (Colts, Steelers)

Well, hopefully we'll finish bottom of the east this year and get to play the bottom of the North (Browns? Bengals?) at home and West (Chiefs?) away next year, too.

http://www.tealdragon.net/sports/nflschd.htm

Not sure where "wildcard" comes into anything...

Strathclyde Eagle 26-09-2008 03:44 PM

The home one was white with red trousers.

Odd to see a SB XX pic with Eason actually standing upright. ;)

Fins have a trip to Atlanta next year. Sooooooo tempting from my point of view. If the game takes place in September... no, can't even think about it rationally.

Edit: Pats' 85 home kit:

Interesting reading. Maybe a stoopid question, but why don't they play everyone once? Is it simply to give struggling sides one season a so called easier fixture list the following season?

That was kind of party of the theory, plus to make sure each side played everyone else at least once every 4 years.

In theory, NE should've had a harder schedule this year by having to play all divisional winners in the AFC. In truth, they have one of the weakest schedules due to the bottom half of the AFC West (Oakland and KC) and NFC West (San Fran and StL) being so pooh.

It's all swings and roundabouts...

But, you couldn't play each team - that would be 31 games minimum! They are talking about reducing pre-season and increasing regular season. I like that idea. A 3 match pre-season and a 17 match regular season. No 8-8 crap - you're either a winner or a loser with a 17 game season :D (unless you inexplicably draw one)

I still don't know. They blew the Seahwaks away in week 1 and went to Jax and won. They now have StL and Arz coming up before the bye week. They could be 5-0 going into the bye. Shame Parrish has gone down injured.

pauldrulez 26-09-2008 05:59 PM

I can still see them blowing it somewhere stupid.

Probably the Rams.

But, they have obviously improved and it will probably be whoever has the form at the right time that will win the AFC.

They won't win the AFC - they'll win the East and get a home wildcard matchup. The way it is going, they could even avoid the wildcard matches completely as I don't think any team in the AFc is going to go better than 12-4 - a result which is not outside the Bills reach.

saxoneagle 26-09-2008 06:13 PM

I know, I know, I just said the Bills could go 12-4 and now you all think I'm mental... :D

pauldrulez 26-09-2008 06:21 PM

No, I said the other day that both the Bills and the Broncos have a pretty simple run of games.

I think they are the biggest threat to the Colts, Chargers and the Patriots;)

Come play-off time, I'd back the Colts 100 times out of 100 to beat the Bills, Broncos, Chargers, Steelers... If they aren't in the AFC title match, despite a poor start, I'll eat something more edible than a Brady jersey ;)

pauldrulez 26-09-2008 06:37 PM

The injuries have hit them hard in honesty. And a rest week is a good help for them just like it is for the Pats whereas its crap for the Giants who are on a roll.

I can't remember the last time the Colts were fit. At least this year it is early season and as the season progresses they'll get people back and match fit and they won't be tired from a full season.

They'll peak in January.

Unfortunately.

Another team I'd rather not see win a ring.

pauldrulez 26-09-2008 06:49 PM

Agreed.

Amazingly, I have a feeling that Denver may not concede 30pts this week

If it comes down to Denver, Colts, Chargers and the Steelers in the last 4, I think that it will be close and it will come down to the defense. All 4 can attack either in the air or on the ground. Although Denver are really relying on Cutler as they have no depth below Selvin Young IMO.
The Chargers have Rivers and LT. But if LT has his usual fitness problems, then they have a more than capable replacement in Darren Sproles.
The Steelers have Roethlisberger and Parker and I think that Mendenhall is more than capable and will show that on Monday should Big Bens injuries flare up.
The Colts are the Colts at the end of the day. They call at the line, they have one of the best QBs of all-time and currently the best in the NFL, they also have Addai who has had a poor season but is better than the RB picked above him in the 2006 draft who screams BUST.

Also, I would like to rescind the Matt Cassel to Superbowl 43 dance I have been doing. I have a feeling he is carrying a knock and that it is going to be whacked many times over the next few games. If this happens, it will be nice to see Kev, Gootz and anyone else that feels like throwing the ball. (Hanson and Gostkowski on fake punts/FGs would be nice :D)

For the Broncos - Andre Hall is averaging over 5 yards on the ground and Pittman has 4 TDs to Young's 1. They have plenty of depth.

On D, they also have some great play-makers - DJ Williams, Bailey, Bly, Webster. They aren't as bad on D as they've looked so far.

The Chargers - Sproles is decent but his size isn't conducive to a fulltime role in the NFL. LT goes down, SD miss play-offs, IMO.

I'm not writing any more as it will ruin my thingy I'm going to do on Sunday after the week 4 games :D

pauldrulez 26-09-2008 09:54 PM

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

whoops, thought I was one of the spoilt fans at the Razor on sunday. ;)

I mean, it was only the middle of the 23rd game unbeaten and 14-3 down. Talk about an awful team

pauldrulez 27-09-2008 09:44 AM

Anyway, I was thinking about the NFL since 2000 as I was looking at the 90's decade team.

Who would people have in their 00's All-Decade Team.
O: 2 QBs, 4 RBs, 4 WRs, 2 TEs, 4 Ts, 4 Gs, 2 Cs.
D: 4 Ends, 4 Tackles, 6 LBs, 4 CBs and 4 safeties.
ST: 2 Ps, 2 Ks, 2 PRs, 2 KRs
2 coaches

Add in a Flex player for any position as the final member of the 53 and I think for me its a 3rd QB... who could that be (Cassel ;))

elliott 27-09-2008 03:30 PM

Miami don't technically have an alternate (and haven't for 2 years).

And technically the colours are aqua and coral.

And also the white is also officially the home jersey (aqua is listed as the road jersey).

Hope that helps.

Jets also have a "throwback" jersey. I think it's important to differentiate between alternate and throwback. Pittsburgh also have a throwback.

etc etc.

There is a list of 08-09 jersey lists.

Latvian Eagle 27-09-2008 03:32 PM

Yeah I know the Eagles yellow nad the navy Jets ones are Throwbacks but they are listed on NFL.com as "Alternate".

Didn't realise the Dolphin's don't use the Orange / Coral one anymore.

elliott 27-09-2008 04:33 PM

Yeh. They last wore it in 2004. And the team have pretty much admitted that they'll never wear it again. However, that doesn't stop them still marketing it!

Strathclyde Eagle 27-09-2008 05:07 PM

We're unbeaten in that jersey. :D

(Only 2-0, but still unbeaten.)

I thought the way the Dolphins did it was that the white is worn in home games that start during the day, and the aqua jerseys are worn in games starting at night?

Latvian Eagle 27-09-2008 05:20 PM

I know certain teams do that SE.

Panthers play all home games in September and beginning of October + pre season in WHITE I believe but then revert back to black for the others. There are also two home games a season where we wear the blue jersey.

Last season when we played @ Dallas we wore the blue rather than the black.

elliott 27-09-2008 06:11 PM

Yeh. Miami will only play night games (and also one preseason I think) in aqua.

But Miami are the only team to officially list their home jersey as the white one.

saxoneagle 28-09-2008 04:27 PM

I'm ready for today. The wife is in some strange Florida city and I get the TV to myself :D

Just need to move the laptop into the front room :D

pauldrulez 28-09-2008 05:41 PM

Just a thing about the jerseys.

Belichick chose to wear the white one in the first 2 home games due to the heat and it being absorbed through the blue jersey.

saxoneagle 28-09-2008 06:38 PM
