And there the labelling does help us. I suspect that I am resisting the notion that people should be labelled, however ; let them identify where they themselves are on the spectrum, yes, but let's resist the temptation to assign everyone we meet to one of your fifteen (?) genders. I don't know what it achieves.

I dont think Ive ever purposefully assigned someone a gender as an adult. Ill admit that I joined in with hes a fag insults as a child and its something I regret. Passively I might occasionally consider what gender I think someone is, as a random thought but not for any purpose, and certainly not to assign them their gender.

I agree that just because there are labels doesnt mean we should label people. They also werent my labels. They were extracted from the article I posted.

Its annoying if that helps? :)

Presumably, the thread was closed due to too many unsavoury comments. I doubt a mod would close another thread if it was created, as long as people remain respectful, which it was before I went to bed.

Two posters locked horns and I think one called the other a keyboard warrior and said something about meeting at the next match, at which point the other posted up his seat number.

Ah, thank you. It must've been tempting to post the seat number of that one obnoxiously annoying fan who always irritates. Two birds, one stone.

Some new words - gaslighting, for example - add colour and interest to our language.

'Sealioning', by contrast, adds nothing but sadness. As in it's sad to see grown men use kids' argot when better adult words exist. (Which takes us back on-thread).

I dont particularly like the term and wont use it myself having just looked up what it meant, but doesn't it describe a new concept that an already established word does not?

It doesnt seem like kids argot to me reading this as it would require a degree of intelligence to understand it’s application rather than just saying ‘lit’ rather than ‘wizard’ or what ever one said in their day.

Garden hose, especially when wound on a tiny reel.
Has anyone invented one that actually unrolls ?

greybot 27-03-2022 10:47 AM

They need to have rollers with a roof to protect them from the sun otherwise the hose just becomes hard and a nightmare to wind back. I gave up with rolling ours back a long time ago. I just bung it in the shed unravelled now and it's much quicker for getting out and putting away when watering the garden in the summer.

My neighbor asked me to water his flowers recently while they were out of town and they had one of those flexible hoses (not sure the technical term is). I was rather skeptical about it, but it was a revelation.

I will definitely get one myself when my current one takes a dump.

Apparently they are called expandable hoses.

Driving back from Leeds on the M1 on Saturday - an alarming number of drivers holding and using their mobiles - the giveaway being their cars moving about in their lanes unpredictably and their eyes looking downward. Of course, one or two may have been engaged in other distracting activities but I imagine the majority were texting.

I'm 100 percent with this. A song that should only be played at Chelsea and liked by Chelsea fans.

I often notice that here in Edinburgh. I keep meaning to count to get an average but lose interest very quickly; but Id say off the top of my head, it is almost 1 in 15 drivers I notice furtively glancing down at the floor.

Try a Fly Zapper (cost about 15). It looks like a small plastic tennis racket with a grid of electric mesh that electrocutes using the battery in the handle.

It looks naff but works well because flies see a newspaper coming at them whereas they can 'see through' the mesh on the zapper. and so do not see it as a threat. That way you can get it right over them before they move off.

I also dislike fly spray because I have to believe that spraying presumably toxic gunk around an area that you are living and breathing cannot be good for you.

I thought I read somewhere it was the air being displaced in front of the incoming newspaper that alerted the flies to move before they get squished?

That is fly swatters work... the air moves through the mesh rather than being pushed forward.

About 15 years back, I dropped a bag of laundry into my local laundromat. Used to pay the bit extra for them to do it as they'd fold it nicely instead of lobbing it straight into the bag like I'd do.
Nothing fancy, just loads of work shirts, t-shirts etc. I didn't bother going to pick it up for a few days. When I did, it was Martin luther King Day and it was closed. I thought it unusual that a Chinese laundry would honor that day so left it another few days before returning. Still closed; with no sign to tell you why. Inquired next door and was told they had gone out of business. The phone number on the laundry ticket was disconnected.
It was over a year later when I noticed renovations being done on the store. I was introduced to the new owner and told her my sorrowful story about how much some of those Fruit of the looms meant to me. I was brought to the basement and there was my laundry bag along with about 30 other bags.
When she eventually opened the place about a month later she was kind enough to launder it all for free.

You know those people who suddenly become their mother's carer in order to slip in there and get the lion's share of the inheritance? That.

Normally never seen, they basically just sit in their elderly parents' house chatting and having tea made for them.

Not an annoyance, but something I found quite amusing last week.

We had one of our famous live prime time high speed car chases though the streets of Los Angeles last week. The vehicle being chased was a stolen black Mercedes SUV. The guy was driving at very high speeds on freeways and surface streets in rush hour traffic, but something that made me smile was he was indicating his every move... which I found very commendable, as I basically have never seen a Los Angeles Police Department, California Highway Patrol or Los Angeles County Sheriff ever use their turn signal at any time!

I digress...

That is quite a charming way to maximise the fun of playing "chase me, chase me" though. It's miserable if the chasers lose you by accidentally taking a wrong turn

I was looking into leasing a car a few years ago. The guy at the leasing company told me not to get Toyota or everyone would think I was a cab driver!

I had one drunk woman shouting at me that I was late, even after I'd informed her I wasn't an Uber.
Had another swaying moron still asking if I'd take him home anyway.
Happens all the time because I pick one of my kids up from Leicester Square at 1am, after his work shift.

The cracker was a neighbour, who I assumed knew who I was after living in the same street for 30 years, trying to get in when I parked outside our house.

I was sat in our previous car in a service station whilst on route to our holiday. A rust bucket of a BMW driver tried to drive straight into the space next to me (when anyone with half a brain could see it was too tight). He didn't stop even when I shouted at the dick before he hit us . So we went on holiday with concertinas down the driver's side of the car.

It's amazing you were able to tell in advance which way they were headed, given the indicator problem highlighted above

You can generally see the direction a car is heading in, just by looking at it's movement. HTH.

BBC website asking you periodically if you want to sign in "because the experience is better if you do". And only giving you "Yes" or "Maybe Later" as the options. There should be a law under which they have to give you a "No and do not ask me again" option to such questions.

With you on that one.

Actually, calling it a cookie is really annoying - making it sound nice and homey like you're going to get a cup of tea to go with it.

It's a tracker so just call it a bloody tracker!

Amen to that

On the official Palace web site when doing a report on the Academy games they have photos of players but never say who they are.

Now I appreciate if I was a proper Palace fan I should know who they are without needing their names under their picture, but I'm sorry to say I'm apparently not!

Bit of a catch 22 really... if I knew who they were I wouldn't need their names added, but if I don't know who they are I will never know because there is no name under the picture!

Fully on board, totally think its all total claptrap, but, I did work with him once and he was genuinely lovely.

Micr*s*ft a/holes keep telling me to 'complete my set-up'. I have nothing else to connect to let you track me, you b'stards. Where is the 'decline' option?

And no, I still don't want Windows 11. Just piss off!

Great shag though.

For 2 weeks now we’ve had a blue tit attacking himself in our conservatory windows. Amusing for a day or so but terribly annoying now. Not the sharpest tool in the box.

My bank website forced me to change my password about a week back.

I went to get on there today and had forgotten it had been changed. After 3 failed attempts it locked me out, not I have to go through hoops to get it unlocked.

I usually use the app on the phone and use my fingerprint to access, so rarely use the password... bastards.

I use a particularly strange user name for my Chase bank access, and a very poor but very easy to remember password and have always wondered why the bank a) accepted it in the first place and b) have not asked me to change it.
I have always wondered about the username bit.... I cannot imagine anyone linking my username to me so I assume the password bit is moot.
Anyone have any thoughts on this? Am I any safer with a complicated username?

Hedgehog 03-04-2022 11:19 PM

I don't think they care about the username CT. In fact most of mine appear to be my email address. I suppose it doesn't hurt to have a complex one though.

I think I posted on here somewhere last week about my debit card getting cloned. I've watched a few videos as to how they do it. I still find it hard to believe false fronts and overlays are attached to petrol pumps and cash machines so easily in this day and age when everything seems to be videoed.

And I'm still baffled as to how the embedded chip in the cards is supposed to help?

I use a virtual Desktop sometimes for work, and it has recently decided that my keyboard is an AZERTY layout rather than QWERTY. It makes it very difficult to do any typing & coding!

I don't know if this is because our VPN system appears to locate me in Amsterdam according to my IP address, because there's nothing in the settings that looks any different to my main laptop settings

Baffled Bob 2 04-04-2022 02:53 PM

When my work laptop warns me caps lock is on and it absolutely f**king isn't.

Constant company e-mails to provide feedback on ...............

If you can't trust your staff to provide good customer service, then you shouldn't have employed them.

I particularly dislike the "How likely are you to recommend" question.

I am very unlikely to recommend any company, like I will not recommend hotels, restaurants or contractors... rating from 1 to 10 for such a question is never going to happen with me anyway.

It's bad when big brother can take a dislike to your BBS username and shut down your accounts.

AZERTY is usually French (or bits of Belgium) - what Virtual Desktop are you using? It should be easy to change locale settings unless they have tied it down (or it is Shitrix) in which case a ticket to your help desk / IT support should do it :)

PALACEWU 05-04-2022 08:17 AM

This new win probability percentage we get given on the TV, total bollocks, I appreciate I can just ignore it but it ****s me off, the beauty of football is that it's unpredictable.
