There was a Scottish bloke who worked for me years back who was always losing his gloves, leaving them in pubs, on trains, buses etc. One Christmas some wag for his Secret Santa bought him a pair of woollen gloves which were attached to each end of a piece of string which was threaded up one arm, across his back and down the other arm.

On the last day at work he was made to put them on when we all went to the pub that afternoon. He was last seen heading drunkenly towards Euston for his train back to Glasgow wearing his new Christmas gloves.

On his return in the New Year it was noticed that he wasn’t wearing the gloves and someone asked him how he’d managed to lose them.Turned out he was busting for a piss when he got to Euston so he went off to the toilets to relieve himself. He took one of his gloves off to have a piss and proceeded to accidentally piss into the glove that was dangling from his sleeve. :D

Being told the numbers of the teams before the FA Cup draw.
What's the point?
Is it to spare us the excruciating, nail-biting agony of that half a second wait between the grizzled old pro calling out "...will play Number 14 " and the presenter triumphantly announcing
"...Crystal Palace!"?

Personally I prefer those extra microseconds of tension between number and team name, despite the gap barely being long enough to ponder "hmm, number 14. We're normally 14 or 15, this could be us".

And who decides "these are the numbers to look out for"?

Even if they do merit being "looked out for" (which our number seldom does), they might just as well say "these are the teams to look out for".

Rightful place is 12:30 on a Monday, direct from a meeting at the FA headquarters in Lancaster Place.

It's gone totally OTT. I think there were more females presenting on BBC Score than men at the weekend. Women's football is still so much lower profile I really don't think it's anything more than tokenism.

RazorsEdge 09-01-2022 07:51 PM

I am not exactly sure what difference it makes if it is a female presenter or a male. You can always switch to watching paint go dry, if you don’t like the choice of the sex of a presenter

I know quite a few of the males ex-professionals aren't very good, but a couple of the ladies on Saturday were dire. One a player I didn't recognise in the studio could barely string a sentence together and mostly just parroted the presenter. Another at one of the grounds barely seemed to know what was going on and was more interested in the weather. It should always be the best person for the job, it doesn't seem to be what BBC Sports are doing.

I have no objection to female presenters/ pundits, god knows most of the men are bad enough, but don't insult my intelligence by saying they've won that trophy meaning the FA cup when it's a completely different tournament.

Yes, and not televised; far more enthralling listening on radio and hearing relative silence with just shuffling, coughs and the rustle of the balls. Also, they should not give away teams numbers beforehand. I know it makes it more transparent in terms of possible corruption, but much more exciting listening blind as it were.

Some of the most exciting football related moments for me as a kid was listening to the FA Cup draws.

Worksop Palace 09-01-2022 09:20 PM

I couldn’t really care less if they are female or male, but they’ve got to be half decent at their job. Plenty of male pundits and commentators are total shit - Matterface, Savage, Keown to name a few. Some really decent female ones - Laura Woods, Emma Paton, Michelle Owen, Sue Smith are pretty good imo. On the other hand Bianca Westwood is beyond appalling

No way at least he has a certain eloquence and knowledge. Until some of these token pundits came along Owen was the worst. States the obvious, completely biased, no insight at all. He reminds me of the trans pundit Ryan Chelford on W1A. Now we seem to have a plethora of female rubbish. That said there are some good ones. Alex Scott more smarts in her left toe than Owen does in his whole body.

Yes! Yes! Yes!!

Just came on here to post the same thing. It’s crazy. You might as well have had a kid on there who has won the FA youth cup or something like that and aligned the experience with winning the men’s FA Cup. Why is this pretence happening?

I wonder which male presenter will have the balls to actually be the first to say something publicly?

Yes, promote the women’s game - fantastic, but please don’t treat the viewer like idiots by equating the two. Like I’ve said before, it’s like the media have suddenly decided to raise the profile of kids football and promoting it alongside the men’s professional game. And for those that think that comparing the women’s game with youth football is degrading; check out the scores of when top women’s football teams play boys teams. For example, the USA women’s World Cup winning side lost 5-2 to the FC Dallas u15’s academy side.

ExiledStirling 10-01-2022 08:09 AM

Good gear comes from China now, and it's cheap postage. Their Blue Laser pointers are beyond belief. You won't get gear like that out of the UK.

Seriously though... Electric goods are probably best from China... they manufacture so much of the bloody stuff.

oh right yeah. I just automatially assume I need to tweak the filter when I search on Ebay these days as it always comes up with so much rubbish.

...on a similar Ebay note, dunno if its just me but I find it really hard to get bargains on there now, theres a huge amount of stuff that can be bought cheaper off Amazon or whatever. I basically only use ebay for cheap knockoff stuff like USB cables (and even that is a false economy as they usually stop working much sooner than the more expensive branded ones)

Isle of Wight 10-01-2022 01:32 PM

It’s used “odd” stuff I use eBay for. Gets my goat when I see what I want but simply won’t buy as it’s in the USA. For cheap tut that I can wait for I use Wish.

Never used eBay but isn't there a setting to allow it to use your location? (If you're like me you have this switched off for virtually all apps/sites) I would imagine that would prioritize stuff that is closer to your location.

There is. Choose what you are searching for and then use the top right filter. Select 'Item Location' as UK only. You can also choose 'Collection in Person', put your post code in, select 'Max Distance' and then filter by distance.

Murphy's Law...

My wife likes to use a certain cleaner for stainless steel appliances and pots and pans. For at least a month there has been none on the shelves at the supermarket, so thinking I'm doing the right thing I order some off of Amazon paying way over the odds and having to pay shipping. Basically something that cost $3.00 off the shelf cost me $15!

So, the annoying bit... went to the market this morning and low and behold - there was the product on the shelves!

Bunch of bloody comedians on here...

Anyway, the place where my wife goes to get her hair done will still only accept cash, no cards. Used to prior to Covid.

He was bitching to my wife about the fees the credit card companies charge to small businesses for the use of their cards, and was also bitching about the cost of doing business is going up all the time due to Covid.

I believe credit companies charge about 3% per transaction, which on a $100 (my wife sometimes pays more than that for whatever they do) would be $3. Yes the chemicals may have gone up, but not the $20 per person they have put their prices up.

I really suspect the place is stashing the cash and not declaring it as income so as to plead for Covid assistance.

In the meantime schmuck here has to schlep over to the bank and get wads of cash to play this jerks game.

My wife asked today if they would do Pay Pay... flat out said no.

3rd world country!

I'm not sure if I'm annoyed with this or amused at how out of touch she is with the real world.

Imagine being married to that. I don't know how Chiswick puts up with it.

Losing something in your house. Had it Monday, can't find it Tuesday.

Very frustrating (is that the same as annoying?).

Nothing to do with CC transaction charges and all to do with tax fraud.

Tell your wife she needs a new hairdresser.

Was it a "wad of cash" by any chance? Check the mrs, does she look different? Her hair maybe?

Tell your wife she needs a new hairdresser.

I've been telling her this for about 2 years now.

Never met the guy, but I don't like him just based on the things he tells my wife.

Trouble is she likes his work, so I might as well talk to a brick wall...

It was actually a stamp!

F**k off Khan, with your half-baked policy announcements.

Good one that. HH Things you see almost on a daily basis, until you need the feckers. My wife stores things in pretty illogical places as well, and it is usually her screaming blue murder when she can't find it. T'other day it was the leprecuans. Or she perhaps thinks that I am committing psychological domestic abuse.

Hedgehog 20-01-2022 12:33 AM

I can't blame the wife on this one, she wasn't in the house (see hairdresser rant above).

She had me searching the house inside out a few weeks back for a small towel. I found it in her car! Don't ask...

Kent not playing any T20 cricket matches in Beckenham this year and probably anytime in the near future.
