Do you care, though?

Look all this is doing is winding up people, who want to chat so let’s just leave it don’t call me foul names and agree to disagree, you keep away from me and I’ll do the same for you. And no I don’t want to be your mate.

I have always done this. Maybe you could say I've been lucky but I've never had the need to make any insurance claims so the money I've saved over the years by not paying insurance will easily mean I'm quids in even if I write off the car tomorrow.

I someimes take travel insurance out if we are travelling to some country where there is a highish risk of picking up something nasty, getting assaulted, or getiing injured in some form of dodgy transport.

Just for the health costs and repatriation fees.

Whether that turns out to be an utter crock when you are bleeding on some hospital floor, who knows. I suppose I kid myself with peace of mind.

I feel fire insurance might come in handy with the ever increasing drought.

Yeah, I get the "peace of mind" bit, but as the original thing if annoyance above exampled, you might (actually this is insurance companies we're talking about - you will most definitely) be fooling yourself.

Fire insurance - would that be possible or would it be voided with some wankery "act of god" clause?

It is me. I search out certain poster who don't do themselves any favours on the BBS. It's one of my hobbies.

I also think it is my duty to help make sure the BBS doesn't become a faceache clone.

You charge around the BBS like a bull(shitter) in a china shop.

You get called out for it. More the fun cause we can imagine the pink rising up your neck.

Every single time.

Make bold statements , for sure. Be prepared to own them when they are critiqued.

Yes it does, for me in my old job to get a parking permit I had to produce my insurance to prove I was covered for commute to work, only then I would be issued.

It is the automatic renewal that catches you out, when they send that email with quotes it looks cheaper than last year and you have to make sure commute to work is included as they normally take it out to make it look cheap but it does not have everything you want

Fully comp does not cover commute to work

Same year as me, plus I was living in Stony Stratford Milton Keynes at the time. Used to drive to work on full comp insurance, especially if rostered on the weekend and would drive to 88 Fenchurch St and park in the Office underground car park.... then go to the Palace game in the arvo, in my 71 Austin Cambridge lol!! .

Do not recall any clause re commuting.... Full comp was full comp, got mine through an insurance broker as well.

How many times did you comprehensively study your insurance policy over those years?

My toaster, for two reasons...

1. A slice of bread doesn't fit in. Who designed and tested this? Surely a basic requirement for a toaster

2. It has a toasting setting from 1-7. 1 is lighted toasted, 2 is fully toasted and everything a fraction above 2 is cremated.

Don't think I ever read it... Doubt if many under 25s ever bother. I did do a rear ender on the New Cross one way system around 1978 in my upgraded Renault 16TS...again on a weekend shift... But this time back to my flat in Peckham.... No insurance issues.

As I said earlier, my policies always said 'Social, Domestic and Pleasure plus travel to one fixed place of work'. But I went through a broker, who I seem to remember way back mid-70s asked me if I would be driving to work; I said 'yes' (didn't everyone drive to work?), so perhaps it was added.

I thought it was just a throwaway question, but maybe not, as it was always specifically part of my policies. I never realised that it had probably been added.

Fen Eagle 16-09-2021 09:35 AM

I'm genuinely feeling this - my toaster has developed a very real and very tangible hatred of crumpets, leaving them either basically untouched or turned into hockey pucks. There is no in between unless I stand guard over it, which feels like far too much effort.

I'm umming and ahhhing over buying one of those fancy Japanese Ballmuda steam toasters to replace it which I'm sure won't be a five minute wonder like the rest of my kitchen gadgets.

Yep that's really irritating, I do this half way toast so number 1 on the burn scale and turn the toast around when it pops up as the bottom half of the toaster is emitting more heat than the top, still not evenly toasted. Might go old school and use the grill!

Direct Line and Churchill (same company so not surprising) include commuting in their Social, Domestic & Pleasure definition, so it's not explicitly stated.

The boffins that design toasters need to go to their local supermarket and buy a few loaves of bread from popular brands to get the measurements

The boffins that design toasters probably do that to be fair, but the Chinese etc don't have quite the same penchant for Mother's Pride sized loaves

Having to deal with incompetent management at work. Managers who got where they are through crawling. Managers who've never had quality training, and really don't get what it means to be Managers. Glory hunters who get rich off other peoples efforts.

In my life I've had very few good managers. My current bos is probably the best ever.

Firefox (again). About 6 months ago after an update all the background for drop down menus went black with white lettering.... I hated it, but after 6 month I'd got used to it.

Yesterday I let it do another update and low and behold the drop down menus have gone back to black letters on a white background.

Now I hate this and want to go back to white on black. Searched the settings inside out (as I did before) and can't find a way to change this.

Why can't these people leave stuff alone FFS!

Yours as well? Even crumpets only require No.4.

And why don't they do a compartment that can take 2 slices + filling so I can do my Cheese and Onion toastie?

They do but they’re a bit bigger and the other way round. Otherwise everything would fall out due to, err, gravity :)

https://www.breville.co.uk/sandwich-makers/

I find they’re not big enough for crumpets and they get stuck when toasting so when late in the morning there is a choice; risk death by using a knife to prod them out or be late? Modern tech solved that one too (turning off the plug also works but weirdly seems more effort than using a tool).

Had a few of those sandwich makers. They are useless. Most only take small loaf size anyway. I meant ones like the sandwich bars have where you lower the sandwich clamped in a wire frame into the toaster. Make great toasties. I want one of those.

Crumpets are fine in my DeLonghi, though.

The dilemma before leaving the house. Will a number 1 suffice or better to wait for a number 2.

Those conveyor belt toasters in hotels are useless too. Minimum of 2 times through whilst everyone queues up behind you, tutting about the smoke after you misjudge the need for a third run

Much maligning of toasters, but has anyone considered the other item in the equation? The bread. Bread with a high water content- the more soft and pliable the higher the water content. This bread will always take longer to toast than a drier bread (or an older soft and pliable slice). Different grains too will toast at different rates.
Another factor is are you using the toaster from cold or has a couple of slices popped out recently? This alone can result in a woefully under toasted slice or equally a burnt husk.

I think you are misjudging the underlying sentiment here with your multiple variables and due consideration.

We all just want our toast and eat it. That we can't is someone else's fault, irrespective of our own input.

That's only because some idiot has changed the speed of the conveyor.

Yours as well? Even crumpets only require No.4.

And why don't they do a compartment that can take 2 slices + filling so I can do my Cheese and Onion toastie?

Our Dualit toaster makes toasted sandwiches vertically. It comes with a cage to put the unmade sandwich in so the filling doesn’t fall out - but doesn’t work well with baked beans.

Adlerhorst 17-09-2021 06:30 AM

My toaster is fine.

I'll settle for a scenario where the slice of bread fits in the toaster

Shouldn’t you buy bread that fits your toaster rather than expecting your toaster to adapt size to fit your bread?

I should have taken a slice of bread with me when I went toaster shopping instead of naively expecting toaster makers to know how big slices of bread are

So complex that it’s hardly worth the trouble. That’s why I prefer a nice bit of hot crumpet in the morning. :)

The independent consider slot size the first consideration when buying a toaster. A bit like buying a slim fit shirt if you are carrying a few lockdown pounds won’t work well.

I think it's more like average adult human purchases clothes advertised as suitable for average adult humans only to discover they were designed for wcb.

stange555 17-09-2021 09:28 AM

kitchen bins. We've got a double bin, left hand side for usual crap, right for recycling. Pedal operated. A couple of months ago, the flimsy plastic "eye" on the inside of the lid snapped off (this is the part that the metal rod that shoots upwards when you tread on the pedal is hooked in to). So now lid doesn't open with the pedal and the only other way to open it is to hook a finger nail under the lid. Yesterday, the right hand one went the same way. Why are things so badly made these days?

Joe85 17-09-2021 09:35 AM

I've had a leak on the boundary of my drive for about 3 months. In that time Thames Water have told me that the leak is there side, dug up the isolation Valve, then told me it was my side, turned up again a few weeks later to dig a whole on my side only to stop halfway through because the leak was from their valve, turned up a few weeks after that, dug up their valve, replaced it and refilled the hole only to discover the leak was on my side.

They're here again today, digging up my drive to repair it. I've no water in the house, the kids have emptied all the cisterns, and i need a massive shit.

I personally still miss toasting a nice chunk of bread on a long-handled fork in front of an open fire, with plenty of butter.

I have a knife.
Cunningly, it has the ability to cut bits off that get in the way ;)
Thay way, you also have a tasty piece of uncooked toast to nibble on whilst waiting.

I can only assume you design toasters for a living

It amazes me that people are prepared to spend ridiculous money on a poncy coffee machine to make something you can get better in a café...but **** all on a toaster.

I can only assume it's the lack of man buns and a pretty pinny that puts you off.
