Cracking Seahawks win. Slightly fortunate witht he referee's call at the end that could have gone either way but a great clutch kick. Come on you Hawks
|
I switched to commentary of that game once the Giants game was in the bag and with the score at 28-27 - what a finish!!!
|
Gotta love the fact that the Jets beat those pesky Dolphins.
Granted I nearly had heart failure as the fish came back from 3-20 to 17-20 in no time. My free $10 bet on the Jets to win the Superbowl at 100/1 lives a little longer!!! :-) |

I was watching the game on the PC and to be honest as a Seahawks fan it was dreadful. I lost the picture at 21-7 to the Rams and so just followed the rest of the game on the ESPN game log and in a Seahawk chat room. Must of been great to watch the end of it.
The look on Holmgrens face as the winning kick goes over is great. (try to catch it on ESPN blitz if you get the chance.) |

Did anyone see Cardinals - Bears MNF? What a game. Cardinals played like they are 5:0, Matt Leinart was great, deefence forced 6 turnovers in 3 quaters and were up by 20 points. CArds had 4 chances to put the game away, and they blew it up every time, amazing. They had a chance for a 40 yard field goal to win it and... ah, you know how it ended. Tipical Cardinals, that's why they are loosers. Last week they missed field goal for the overtime, now for the win.... I'm so frustrated...
|
Always worth a read Kolja:
http://www.deadspin.com/sports/arizona%20cardinals/ Grim, you know you're destined to finish 9-7 and just miss the play-offs. ;) Hey-ho, we get another high draft pick in a year where the player pool is pretty weak. |

Great link! |
Yikes, that Denny Green video is pretty scary. I think someone should make Alex Ferguson make some remarks about Neil Rackers, just to see if it is possible to push him totally over the edge.
|
Can anyone confirm what the situation was when we took the FG attempt?
From what I saw (3am with no sound on a dodgy screen), it looked like we had 33 seconds left and a time out! Why the hell didn't we play two more plays and get into field goal range properly? |
|
Cheers.
|
Redskins off to the 5-0 Colts today - i fear the worst :( :)
|
TB go 21 zip up, McNabb throws a 52 yard pass for TD to level things with 30 seconds left, then TB....
Matt Bryant kicked a 62-yard field goal  with 0 secs left... TB win 23-21 |
Yikes! That's incredible.
Dolphins doing the usual, after weeks of semi-heroic defence the offense decides to awaken (slightly), only for the defence to utterly capitulate. 1-6 coming up (0-7 against the spread). |
••••••• shambles.
My friend is a die hard cheesehead, he laughed lots. I've never looked so forward to a bye week. (And I got called for holding 3 times in my match today!!!) On the plus side, next weeks show (on Sky) will feature a few clips from Sheffield Uni. The Miami dolphins cheeries (believe it when you see it!) are coming and we're going to be on telly. I'll be in my white CC fins jersey |
Even The Raiders won!
Possibly the worst ever team to play in the NFL in my 25 years here. |
you're forgetting about the early 90s Pats Bob, and of course the 80s Bucs.
What is going on with the Dolphins and the Jets? How can they be so much worse/better than advertised? |
Hi guys, just started to get into the NFL, but I don't have a team as yet, any suggestions?
Not that it's a necessity, but my favourite colour is green. :p I've narrowed it down to 1 of these 3 teams... Seattle Seahawks (I like their uniform, simple as), Carolina Panthers (cool name, cool uniform!), Philadelphia Eagles (play in greenish and called the Eagles!). :p |
I like Carolina, as I think Steve Smith is brilliant, they have had a good few years, underdogs who done very very well, quite small fish in a big pond, a bit like Palace. Seattle are good, but not that good anymore, you would be glory hunting, Phili, well if you want mediocore with a few good wins along the way then follow them.
|
1 point to Carolina...
Anyone else want to stake their point... I'll give this until the end of the day, and see which team gets the most. |
Btw Seattle I suppose are still very good, but im posting the above after they lost at home for the 1st time in 3 seasons last night, and they were beaten very comfortably.
|
Yeah I saw the game vs the Vikings.
|
Think the half-time tea in the Skins dressing room was obviously drugged :(
How amazing was that Steelers v Falcons game? |
Go for the eagles any day!
|
Good god! Oakland won!
Does that make the fins as bad as Oakland now? |
As I'm new to all this I've been through the Carolina roster and noted all the "positions" but I don't know what half of them mean. I know QB is Quarter Back and is the playmaker type role. And I presume K is the kicker. But what do the others mean, and what is their role within the team...
C CB DE DT FB G K LB P QB RB S T TE WR Cheers guys. |
Center - Offensive line, Snapper of the ball, blocks for QB
Cornerback - Defensive player, stops the passes and runs. Opposite of a wide receiver. Defensive End- A D lineman. Runs around the outside and sacks the QB Defensive tackle - Fat man on the D line. Blocks the holes, makes sacks Full Back - One of the offensive running backs. Guard - Offensive line, blocks for the QB K - Kicker Linebacker - Tackler on defense Punter - Open field kicks from hand Quarter back Running back - Runs with the ball Safety - Like a CB. T - ??? TE - An offensive lineman who can catch the ball WR - Receiver. Catches the ball. I play center |
T = Tackle - offensive lineman. Blocks DE for QB
|
Cheers Elliott. What's a sack?
|

This can happen on any given play but a defensive co-ordinator may call a play called a "blitz". This is where at least 5 defensive players are assigned to get the QB. Re your other point, I support San Fran. They were one of the best teams during the 80's and early 90's. The greatest coach ever (Bill Walsh) pioneered the "West Coast Offence" which involved the QB throwing predominantly short passes to his receivers. A little bit like "Total Football" from the Dutch I think. Well after all great empires they have bitten the dust big time for various reasons. They finished last two seasons ago and 6th last last year. They are currently in a big rebuilding period. The offence is taking shape, the D sucks big time! Currently shipping the most amount of points per game. They are an interesting team to watch for these two reasons. You can see most of their games on Fox TV via TVU player (which you can download for free). Hope this helps. Go Niners! :lux: |
Well I think I've narrowed it down to two teams now...
Philadelphia Eagles - They play in green, and are called the Eagles. Carolina Panthers - Their kits are hella cool, their name is cool too. Both seem like they're not overly good teams, but not overly bad either. They're kinda 50/50 at the mo poss Panthers just leading. |
Philadelphia are actually a pretty strong team, should make the playoffs at least.

Deadspin post of the day on Donovan McNabb throwing up in Tampa:
"McNabb's lunch was the only thing he threw up yesterday that wasn't returned for a TD by Ronde Barber." :D |

|
GO PANTHERS!!!
Found out yesterday that Bill Goldberg played for them. :o Didn't even know that! |
Just a couple of fleshings out:
Full Back - One of the offensive running backs. Generally more of a blocking back who "leads" the running back through the line. Carries the ball far less, generally on short, hard yardage situations. Usually physically bigger than the RB. Guard - Offensive line, blocks for the QB. Also an eligible receiver on nominated plays, though these are rare and unusual. Linebacker - Tackler on defense. Divides in MLB (middle linebacker) and OLB (outside linebacker). The MLB is generally the defensive quarterback. He has to read the play and react accordingly (cover or stuff the run). The OLBs are generally more aggressive, but also cover, stuff, and blitz. Safety - NOT like a CB. There are two of them. SS is strong safety, mainly a coverage position, often picking up the tight end, and FS is free safety who generally needs to read the game and react accordingly. The safety's often blitz in appropriate situations. TE - An exterior offensive lineman or interior wide receiver. A hybrid position populated by players who can both block and catch the ball Also worth knowing: 3/4 a defense with 3 defensive linemen; two DEs (defensive ends) and on NT (nose tackle) plus four linebackers, two interior and two outside. 4/3 a (more common) defense with two DEs, two DTs and three LBs, one middle and two outside. Nickel defense (or just nickel). Sacrifice one of the front seven for an additional defensive back. Dime defense (or just dime). Ditto, but two. Lastly, two very common calls: Illegal motion: No one is allowed to move before the ball is snapped once the formation is set and, Illegal man downfield: Usually an offensive lineman who has ventured too far beyond the line of scrimmage. Hope that helps. I play center |
Quote:
I've only seen someone report as eligible once and then he was not a down-lineman. Illegal man downfield is not particularly frequent. I've only seen it once. Hilariously, one time last season from guard I pulled on a passing play. This led to me being ridiculously downfield. I actually lead blocked for the WR who ran in the TD! Madness! |
You see holding far more than illegal man downfield. Any time you see a flag in the offensive backfield it is almost certainly offensive holding.
|
Or a false start
|
Are there certain players who cna't go forward then?
|
Quote:
Quote:
It gets even more confusing on punts. Only two players can be downfield prior to the actual kick. |
On pass plays, the entire line (of 5 men) has to stay behind the L.O.S until the ball has been thrown (incidently, if the pass doesn't cross the line of scrimmage, they don't have to be). If they go forward it is "Illegal man downfield"
On punt, 2 people can run forward on the snap of the ball, but everyone else must wait for the kick before they can proceed. When I finish my degree, I'm writing to the NFL to officially apply for the draft as a longsnapper. Going to make tapes and give my stats etc. I'm desperate for a written reply back! |
Fascinating sport from what I know so far, all about tactics at the end of the day. Some of the hits these guys take is immense. Not sure I could handle the pain!
|
Quote:
It happens sometimes on goalline situations when you don't have any wide recievers. |
Do you have to report as eligible?
Do you line up as a guard or someone in the backfield? |

I'm off to see the 49ers and Vikings in San Fran in 2 weeks time. Will be my second game of the season after I saw Reggie's debut for the Saints in Cleveland.
For anyone with access, watch the College Football on Saturdays - way more exciting than NFL... although the past few weeks has been crazy with last minute big plays - 62 yard field goal? You're having a laugh :D |
Quote:
Taylor doesn't need to report as eligible (wearing 99). It's assumed. Only 50-79 need to report. JT frequently comes in on goal line (TE I think) |
Quote:
Should be a BCS Bowl team with their programme but they'll be lucky to be ranked in the top 5 come the season end. Quinn isn't even in the same league as Young and Leinart. What are your opinions on Colt McCoy? He looks like he's going to fit into Young's shoes quite nicely... |
Quote:
So there is a reasoning behind the numbering? I always thought there was but then when you look at the TE's round the league their numbers seem to vary so much (Shockey is 80, which is what a WR would usually be). Could never see a particular, fixed pattern. |
Quote:
More important question - if he's practising against the Dolphins OL every day how come they never learn anything? Honestly, I think you could put JT against the entire Fins OL and they wouldn't be able to block him. Article on numbering - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_Num...niform_numbers - not sure it is altogether correct, as it doesn't explain why Kellen Winslow Jr wears 11 when he's a tight end. |
Jim Otto 00.
My mate Dan has petitioned BCAFL to let him wear 00 |

|
But you can't do that in any college football (or NFLE)
|
I don't know for sure... but I assume the rules are the rules... and you can do it whenever you want... it's part of the game....
|
Shock of the season... Bill Simmons didn't use his bye week covering against a poor team in regard to the Dolphins.
|
The Bears are 24-0 up on the 49ers and it is still the first quarter.
|
40-0 after the 1st half
|
Sorry 41-0
|
Was there any footage from Sheffield today?
Basically we had Coors, Sky and some fins cheeries (real!) If you saw anyone quite fat wearing a super sexy Chris Chambers shirt, it was my. I think I was swearing at my coach and calling Nick Halling a wanker on telly. Great night |
I won a signed calender and squad roster thing

At least when I left for work at halftime... I didn't miss anything! |
Panthers lost 35-14 against Dallas.
|
All going tits up for the Seahawks now. Least we have the Raiders next monday, so i hope to see at least a win!
|
Well, I'm going to see the 49er's on Sunday against the Vikings... hopefully they'll roll over and die again! Not because I like the Vikings, just because the 49ers are so bad it's funny.
Have they played the Raiders yet? |
To be fair i think the 49ers are actually better than the Raiders!
|
There are quite a few teams on 2-5 records but even the Cardinals 1-7 sh*ts all over them all :D
Looks like after having a fairly early pick this year (10th?) they might be able to get an early one next year... which begs the question - given they took Leinart last year, who would they take this time round? Quinn would be pointless (a rookie and a 2nd year QB) so maybe they will take the route similar to this years first pick and go for a lineman. Talking of rookies, anyone notice Reggie Bush threw a pass yesterday? An interception... :D |
Redskins had a good result yesterday :D
Gotta love that offensive display from Oakland against the Steelers :D 50-odd yards passing and 50 rushing, and they still beat them :) That's what I love about NFL over our beloved 'soccer' - anyone really can beat the best (well, maybe not the 49ers) |
I'm English but I probably watch at least 4 or 5 "football" matches a week here what with the midweek college stuff (big match this Thursday for anyone that cares), the Saturday college stuff (USC lost for the first time in 27 regular season games this weekend) and then Sunday and Monday NFL.
My girlfriend, an American, hates football but will watch it if the University of Texas are on (apparently, Vince Young is awesome and Reggie Bush cheated to win the Heisman and also sucks c*ck). :D |
Surely the packers season is now turned around:D Giants looking strong in a poor NFC East.
|
Well, I made it (to Chicago) and I can report direct from Soldier that it was a blissful afternoon...not much of a football game, mind. No worry leaving a bit early to get a flight back (to Boston.) Caught some of the Boys game on TV too last night, they were impressive. I have to say that Romo has poise...frankly, I thought he might get eaten alive.
As you can imagine, no one here (Boston) is doing much today with the Pats on MNF tonight. As a Bears fan, I can only hope they stuff the Vikings. And then home, to the mess that awaits at Selhurst :-) |
Well, the Vikings did get stuffed...!
|
Indeed. I fell asleep in the second half, but the Pats were impressive for as long as I watched. Next week (Pats vs. Colts) is going to be a can't miss game. Let's hope it's on Sky.
|
Pats have got a tough month - playing both undefeated sides at the start and the end. Fortunately, they're both in Foxboro so I'd back the Pats to win at least one.
The two games mid-month aren't very easy either... November should be a good month. |
I bet Tony has a smile on his face at the moment
|
Watching the game at the moment, Dolphins looking good. Shame really as i have lumped on the bears today!
|
Also, Harrington is looking classy at the moment.
|
Jason Taylor doing the business as per usual.
Olindo Mare, as usual, isn't. :bash: |
Elliott's bit on TV now
|
Bit of a wobble towards the end of the half, reckon the bears will step up now and take over 2nd half.
|
Redskins are making a fight of it this week :)
|
NFL.com's Gamecenter really sucks. According to them it is still half-time at Soldier Field, while instead Finheaven.com users are saying about Wes Welker's first ever offensive TD. :lux:
Welker and Taylor go to the top of the queue for when I get an aqua jersey to go with my white one. |
I've got to bath my daughter. If the lead stays at 11 or increases she might be in the water longer than Gooders was during the Southend game.

* saying nothing *

Jason Taylor really is some kind of player. He does this kind of thing week-in, week-out. |
Go Skins :) :)
I think Washington are the Palace of the NFL |
Great pressure kick from the Skins kicker there to win.

you can't beat a good old blocked field goal

Reading the play-by-play of that Washington-Dallas game sounds mad at the end. Nice to see Vanderchoke still keeping up his record with games on the line.
|
All over in Chicago. :lux:
|
It was a mental end to a cracking game :)
Now let's see if the Skins can go on the kind of run they did last season and make the play-offs :) |
Miami winning in Chi Town is craaaaaazy
