What a great game that turned into.

Shame the Squealers one but at least it was a good game.

Good end to a good season in my book.

I couldn't agree with you more. So much to talk about from the game last night. I'm on a high today after watching that and how weird is that seeing as I don't support either team. I really feel for the Cards though ... Never been such an important time to run down the clock just that little bit more ...

AddiscombeEagle 02-02-2009 01:43 PM

I was thinking that exactly this morning, great TD and all that however in hindsight, they would have been better off running that clock down a bit more.

Still should expect to win, what was the 1:40 or something on the clock. Big Ben did good.

Notice the wink.

I've also called him Ruthlessberger, Worthlessweiner and Ruthlessburglar in the past.

Since the other day you moaned about me not talking about the SB, maybe you should give your accurate report of the game.

From PFT:
Quote:

NFL officials were adamant that Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner clearly fumbled in the closing seconds of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ dramatic victory in Super Bowl XLIII, a stance that Warner and coach Ken Whisenhunt disagreed with vehemently.

Warner thought his arm was coming forward when the football was punched out by Pittsburgh linebacker LaMarr Woodley with five seconds left in the game and wanted an instant replay review from the booth.

“I was really surprised on that one because I was definitely moving my arm forward to throw the ball,” Warner said. “I thought I’d almost gotten the ball off, so yeah, it does surprise you that in that kind of situation — five seconds to go to decide the Super Bowl — you would think it was something they’d do.

“But maybe somebody saw it clearly. I don’t know what they see, and what makes then decide that, but I was actually on the sidelines expecting a review.”

However, NFL vice president of officiating Mike Pereira affirmed the replay official’s decision.

“We confirmed it was a fumble,” Pereira said. “The replay assistant in the replay booth saw it was clearly a fumble. The ball got knocked loose and was rolling in his hand before it started forward. He has to have total control.”

Whisenhunt was looking for a review, too, one that never came.

“I was hoping it would be,” Whisenhunt said. “I knew it was inside two minutes and it was a booth review. Obviousl, I would have liked to seen it replayed because it looked to me that Kurt was throwing the ball.”

For the game, the Cardinals were penalized 11 times for 106 yards.

Of course, even if Warner’s fumble had been ruled an incompletion, the Cardinals were looking at a situation where Warner would have been heaving a Hail Mary pass.
I tend to agree, at first I thought it was incomplete.

As a keen American football fan during my teens, I now always make an effort to watch the final. This year three friends of mine decided to come round and fight shut eye with me. We were all rooting for the cardinals as they were the underdogs and everyone likes an upset. It seemed like the steelers had it in the bag after that 100 yard run just before half-time. Couldn't for the life of me figure out why the cardinals threw the ball when they were so close to the endzone.

It really looked like it wasn't going to be the cardinals day as they gave penalties away left, right and centre. Then the fourth quarter brought a little hope with that superb catch from Ronaldinho's better looking brother. It was so exciting one of my friends who had fallen asleep found himself sitting on the edge of his seat again.

When the cardinals got the football again we were praying that either Ronaldinho's better looking brother or Robocop (the guy with the black visor who seemed the only one to have done any good in the first half) comes into play again. It was the former who saved the day and we were off our seats cheering the sprint straight down the middle of the park.

We thought it was written that the cardinals would be crowned champions. But some great play saw the steelers creep ever closer to the endzone and then that catch! Our only hope was that our own interpretation of the feet having to be grounded would mean the touchdown wouldn't be given but it sadly was.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable affair that met and exceeded last year's nail-biting final. Hope that camera man is okay after Bruce Springsteen's knee power-slide :p

He's got two rings. How many do you have? Maybe you should show a little respect rather than stupid name making up, wink or no wink.

I will when I have time to post in more detail. I'd rather post something which means something and makes sense than a couple of lines of bias tripe :p

Roll on the Pro Bowl.

Nice to see the bias I showed above

As for the comment about rings, that makes sense.

I have 7 years to get 2 rings. I can do it :S:

And as for players not being given nicknames, I take it Big Ben is an awful nickname since he doesn't look like a clock and isn't in the UK.

And the Greatest Show on Turf was never proven either, it could have been someone else or a completely different sport

You are showing obvious conference bias by calling Roethlisberger such petty names as Ruthlessberger, Worthlessweiner and Ruthlessburglar. He's a great QB, one of the top 5 in the league and all you did was make a crass comment about him pre-game which you have yet to rectify and admit you were wrong...

But then coming from a kid who knocks one out over Matt Cassel, I won't hold my breath waiting ;)

saxoneagle 02-02-2009 03:24 PM

I've just noticed something about the Steelers, similar to our own football team.

Palace had this knack of promotions in years that ended in 9 (1969, 1979 and 1989) only broken so far by 1999 (wait for 2009!).

Three of the Steelers Superbowl appearances have been in years ending in 6 - 1976, 1996 and 2006.

Not really sure what I'm trying to show there, just, er, you know, bored... :D

At least 3 major plays decided by video replays, plays called back for personal fouls that on any other day could be considered continuation plays and would have gone unpunished, and holding penalties that get called at the whim of refs/umpires/judges etc. (much like manhandling in the penalty area in the penalty area at football I guess).

It's exciting for the TV, but as a spectator in stand.... you must have to rely so much on the jumbotron to find out what the heck is going on.

(And I've been to 3 NFL games so know what it's like to actually be there - well not a Super Bowl, but Super Bowls are like the FA cup final.... too many pawn sandwich brigade.... could you hear a difference in the crowd noise from normal today?)

On the contrary, it's infinitely more exciting to be at a game than to watch it on telly. And you always know what's going on because refs are mic'd up and the PA announcers describe every play and penalty after it has happened. I've never had to rely on the jumbotrons, though they're handy for replays.

I took some flack for having Big Ben so high up when I originally posted these in the first week of November. Anyone still wanna dispute his position? ;) :D :lux:

I didn't really follow it this year but I was pleased to see the Steelers won the big one. Its not a fashionable place, built around an unfashionable industry but they have a great football team.

pauldrulez 02-02-2009 05:55 PM

a) I'm not apologising over a jokey comment between myself and jj.

Ben, you were right on the Berger.

Hill, Thigpen, Wallace, Schaub and Cassel. Up arrows.

Romo, Favre and Delhomme. Down arrows.

I'll find mine and see what a tit I made of myself.

why would you? It's just a joke comment. I mean come on a slight overeaction.

He was good last night but not amazing. Made a couple great throws and benefits from his size in that (as seen in the first drive) he can run the ball himself well. But he got patted out of the air twice once was an interception and nearly got sacked in the last drive due to indecision. Saying that he gets the ball away well under pressure and is hard to sack due to his size. Overall I'm not disputing that he is a good player, but lets keep some perspective.

pauldrulez 02-02-2009 06:47 PM

You'd think I called him the worst ever.

I mean, the whole point of being a sports fan is that you hate players.

Patriots fans hate Peyton Manning. The funniest think I heard was the Manning face during interviews. As well as when someone said that his head actually looks like a penis.

Tony Homo etc etc.

What is the point in a sport if you cant laugh at it
