Old/elderly relatives who think it’s perfectly fine when they visit your home to immediately start telling your kids off. ‘Ooh, you’re spoilt, put your toys away’, I can’t work out if it’s their way of “bantering” and they think they’re being funny but this kind of thing used to traumatize me when I was little and I always saw those relatives as awful miserable ogres, now I’m seeing exactly the same thing happening now I’m the parent. I thought my wife’s head was going to explode last time and I’m glad there was no bloodshed.

Maybe there’s a gap in the market for education classes for the 80+ community on how to talk to three year olds without traumatising them?

Odd thing is, I'm fine/good in the kitchen with knives etc and cooking in general.

Learnt a fabulous trick for rusted in screws/bolts yesterday. After the WD40 hit the screwdriver or bolt hard with a hammer. Then tighten rather than release for a fraction until you hear the crack of the rust/corrosion. With a bolt you can put a pipe over the spanner for more leverage. I love being shown this kind of stuff. Maybe I should Have posted this in things that make you happy thread.

As far as I am concerned they can do want in their house, but when in mine, I don’t think asking them to put a toy away before getting others out is unreasonable.

I’ve noticed this and I think it’s them trying to help you. They look at it as the child will learn to tidy his/her toys and at the same time make the place neater.

Builders, or plumbers in this case, who put their feet through the ceiling!

The builder who was doing our loft conversion last year fell through the ceiling into the bedroom below and now just had a plumber put his foot through the tiniest gap in the floorboards in the bedroom above my office where an internal wall has been taken down.

I'm fine with accidents happening but it's the fall out from it and extra hassle, ie the ceiling in my office now needs to be patched, plastered and painted. It was a perfect ceiling before and now potentially won't be.

Shot a Kangaroo at my BiLs station that he manages out the back of Goondiwindi. Only got it in the lower back with a rifle with a 30 something or other...it had a big kick. He had to hit it the badly injured lovely creature on the head...never ever again. We were supposed to be hunting feral pigs.

We have a gas boiler on which we took out Breakdown Insurance . As part of the Policy
you have to show evidence of regular servicing in line with manufacturer's recommendations .
Boiler working fine - water and heating not been an issue . Yesterday fella services the
boiler . At the end he is unable to reconnect the gas supply . " It's an old boiler - I don't
carry those bits ' He is unable to return until Monday - so 4 days minimum without
heat & hot water . And there is a cold snap forecast .
I'm going to p*ss in his cup of tea Monday - even if its not the same bloke who turns up ...

Recruitment companies that email you with job details with then forget to put the whole details like working Mon-Friday, then with a big of digging around and finding job on actual company website actually shows working 2 out of 3 saturdays as well.

Add to that companies who you actually make time to go for an actual interview dont even getting back to you. Tossers.

Had 3 today...

First was a job 3 hours away, the second was for a job role I stopped doing a year ago, the third was a 20-30k paycut.

Thanks, but no thanks

The experience i have had with recruitment agencies , I was thinking of going down that route as they are hopeless. At 52, I am looking at something new to do but emailed a couple of companies but they do not want to know. And Rishie wants the older generation back to work, he is dreaming, I have had nothing but negative interaction.
I was looking at apprenticeships but dont think they would want to know.

The irony wasn't lost on me either. There was the big news stories about over 50s dropping out of the workplace or retiring and companies being 'concerned'. The very next day there was a story full of over 50s desperate for work, who couldn't get anything because of age discrimination!

Why is there no 12.30 ko today but a 19.45 one?

I hate

But this is even worse. Whats good about attending football is you can do other things with your weekend, but Saturday night football takes that away, the prime time of the weekend.

People who use their camera phones at football. At the Liverpool game on Saturday there were a couple of blokes who I had never seen before (I'm always in the same spot) taking videos every time the ball came up our end. Why? Watch the bloody game you've paid to attend in person! And if you want to see highlights then they are on YouTube or MOTD, put together by professionals whose video recording skills are considerably better than yours!

Had a woman sat in front of me at the last Man City home game that was doing this. Every time the ball came anywhere near our goal she’d hold her phone up in the air and start filiming, if nothing happened she’d delete the file. Just bizarre and annoying, was contemplating in my head what would happen if I grabbed her phone and flung it away.

Discovering that the $200 the government are giving us to compensate for not having mains gas is being paid to our electric supplier, British Gas, who will credit our account.
So, we still keep paying our fixed direct debit (designed to pay our monthly bill in full-ish) and BG keep the excess on our behalf 'just-in-case' until it is used up.
Multiply that across the country - nice little earner on the interest.
I was going to use the cash to pay for our oil - now it is trapped.

France, thank you.

Having just had the privilege of a weekend scaling Table Mountain and other touristy things in Cape Town, and a further 3 days in Johannesburg, I’ve now moved onto an overnight stay in Nairobi before spending Friday in Dar Es Salaam.

Long week. (Cape Town is amazing, though).

Oh, and it took me 2.5 hrs to get through that ******* queue.

Cheers!

What's the commute like? 6.30am start is suggesting a 5.30am leave the house. And will you really be leaving your desk at 4.30pm every day?

Watch the bloody game you've paid to attend in person! And if you want to see highlights then they are on YouTube or MOTD, put together by professionals whose video recording skills are considerably better than yours!

Not just at football, try going to a concert, loads of twats doing the same there.

Also art galleries and museums and famous public monuments/buildings. It's bonkers.

PeterH 02-03-2023 10:57 PM

There seems to be a need for people to show their friends and family what exciting lives they are leading. No problem at all with the occasional photo of something a bit different, maybe in the form of a strong recommendation to visit. It gets a bit much when people are constantly posting their restaurant meals.

I might start posting up pics of every time I visit mundane places, fast food emporiums, banks, supermarkets, or the view from my toilet seat.

Maz 02-03-2023 11:12 PM

Yes. My pet hate, people who photograph their meals.

I seem to recall art galleries used to not allow cameras. It might have had something to do with using a flash.

About the only one on your list I would say is acceptable is monuments and buildings, especially if a tourist, I mean that is old school.

The amount of people taking selfies at Auschwitz was incredible. I took one photo of *the* gate which I think is allowable.

But many of these people don’t even actually look at what they’re photographing.

Aye... last time I was there I saw someone taking a group shot standing infront of the wall of death. I decided that, in its own way, it's as poignant a reminder of the ludicrously mundane reality of the industrialisation of death that the place represents. It often seems to me that we never really learn anything much... us humans.

The flash ban was always to avoid fading the art work over time but some places probably banned cameras so they could sell their own glossy guide books and literature in the gift shop. Now with everyone having camera phones its probably hard to implement or enforce that rule.

Some places still have flash bans on certain artworks. Sorry about banging on Poland again, but Leonardo’s Lady With an Ermine was the only artwork I remember having one of they.

This was great as it allowed me to spend quite some time on the painting because disappointed tourists popped into the darkened room which just contained this one masterpiece and effed off as soon as they couldn’t take a flash photo.

I read or heard on the radio , not sure of a bloke who proposed to his girl friend in front of the Arbeit Macht Frei. To some it's just another bucket list item.

The thing is - I went to the Mezquita in Cordoba a couple of weeks ago. Extraordinary building, enlightening a story of centuries of migration and conquist, encounter and domination, and I have a camera in my pocket I couldn’t have dreamt of affording, 20 years ago. The play of light at nine in the morning permitted some dramatic shots. Why wouldn’t I take photos?

I think that is a myth. The main purpose of the flash ban, I was told in the Sistine Chapel, is to allow people to enjoy the place without distraction or annoyance.

Levski 03-03-2023 09:37 AM

People now playing music / videos on their phones on public transport without headphones. Intensely annoying.

Makes me laugh when you see people taking selfies with celebs or football players and then rather than looking at and engaging with the person, they just go off looking at their phone screen picture.

CP-RJW 03-03-2023 09:50 AM

There’s supposedly an innate human need for social approval, but I think instagram and the like take it too far. Too many people just can’t enjoy anything nowadays unless they receive a dopamine rush of likes in the process.

What having been the crowd of people inside was a massive distraction. Was more moved by St Peters which was stunning inside and felt more able to move.
Would also add the walk to the Sistine was so special the art was brillant.

I think the fundamental point here is that of people taking selfies at sites which deserve contemplation especially where, for example, it's a site which represents the horrors of one of the worst periods in human history which still reverberates in our culture(s), rather than taking photos at those sites per se.

So, for example, I have many images from Auschwitz-Birkenau, Vatican City, Maya temples etc. but, as a photographer, I compose and post-process the images in an attempt to relay the profound other rather than the superficial self (check my site out from the link below ;)).

If it's not a profound scene, then yes - absolutely anything is game for a photograph for me although, in the same sense, I shoot with a focus on the subject rather than to get attention.

Totally agree. Sistine was impossible to appreciate.

Sidenote. imo the Giotto chapel in Padua is far far more impressive. Perhaps because you can pre-book tickets for an allocated day and time and they never let more than a few people in at any one time, and you get twenty minutes or so. Stunning artwork and only 20 mins or so from Venice.

I don't know. I worry about atrocity photos. We went to the killing fields in Cambodia and I remember the guide saying "and this is the tree where the guards would beat out babies' brains by swinging them against it", and watching dumbfounded as people instantly took photos of it. Why would you want a picture of that tree? Why wouldn't you just want to stop and think?

Right or wrong It was certainly the explanation given by many museums/galleries etc.

Am I right in thinking that, if you get lots of likes, you then get paid some advertising revune that Google or Instagram app gets?

Yep, that's in keeping with my point. Contemplation of the subject is the key but we usually don't have an accurate enough insight into the internal sensibilities or intentions of someone taking such images while, in retrospect, them doing so may even cause deeper contemplation at a later stage. There are also many other good reasons to take such images... documentary and war photography spring to mind but these are specific to the art form of course, rather than mere mundane tourist activity.

We might also consider that just going to a place like this has these dynamics (often cited by people as why they don't visit). I'll be in Vietnam soon but I won't be going to the tunnels and traps because I've seen and contemplated enough human wickedness to know that I won't really learn anything much by seeing what I've experienced vicariously through documentaries in this case. But, YouTube is full of people who would only just waking up to this type of reality, so there's a balance that only an individual can attain... by contemplation, again.

Personally, I'm usually well prepared beforehand when I visit such places.
