Beyond my comprehension why he signed for us. Can see at £4m he was a steal for us but unless Dougie et al said to the contrary he’s not ahead of Richards and fortunately neither Guehi or Anderson have a history of injury or suspension.
Seems like a good egg as well.
Maybe Richards is off ?

Can't imagine us making much, if any, in terms of a profit on Holding. Maybe he wasn't ready to take up the "semi retired" Martin Kelly role

Holding was a no brainer signing for a reported initial fee of £1m. These days you are lucky to get a league 1 player for that money so to get a guy who has played near 100 games in the prem is great business. Obviously Richards is the next taxi on the rank of Andersen or Guehi get injured or sold. Holding fills that 4th centre back slot perfectly as a big upgrade on Tomkins. If we didn’t buy Holding could you imagine Andersen or Guehi getting injured for a period of time & the panic on here that Tomkins would be our 1st centre back option on the bench.

Cheap cover is cheap cover. A couple of injuries and we would all be moaning without him. No team does it on starters alone

Especially important in a season with big international games

Think we will disagree on this one. Any PL team needs 4 starting quality CBs to cover injuries and suspensions. With 3 of ours being regular international squad members the risk is even higher. Tomkins sadly no longer falls into that starting ready category due to age and injury, and O’Brien clearly wasn’t viewed as at that level. Holding steps into that JT role perfectly.

The interesting question is what happens if one of MG or JA leaves. Do we spend big on a ready made replacement or go for someone like Edwards and let Richards step up.

13 goals and 6 assists in the Bundesliga in only 1,880 minutes and 12 goals in 11 games at U21 level all before the 19th birthday suggests there is something there.

Just how good he might be will only be tested when he is playing regular football. He has only played a full game 5 times all last year and interestingly they only won one of them. Think they will loan him out for regular game time and for us, he just needs to be better than Edouard or Mateta.

Yeah those stats suggest he's a bit tasty! You have my permission to put a bid in Dougie!
