The Hiking Thread

OK it's not a sport but it's physical and it's probably better here than in GCC. Maybe it'll die but maybe it'll be a place to share adventures, advice and experiences.

I was out in Snowdonia last week for an overnight impromptu backpack with an old work pal, we 'climbed' the Devil's Kitchen and camped overnight in the col between Y Garn and Glyder Fawr. As you know there was a bit of a storm last weekend so instead of staying on the mountain we decided to descend because by the afternoon winds were 70mph sustained gusting to 100mph and we didn't fancy an accident, the gutless ponces we are.

Pen yr Ole Wen and the Carneddau

Glyder Fach

I'm going out on a limb here to at least prove I was there

"Camp One" (of 1)

And just when you think that you've seen it all, just when you think "oh well let's get off the mountain in case we die" we pass this guy on the way up. I'm not kidding, the wind was proper strong! He said to us "I want to feel distressed".......

I'm planning another trip to introduce one of my daughters to the wilderness in a longer term plan to thru-hike the walkers Haute Route Chamonix-Zermatt with her later this year fingers crossed (120 miles).

Maybe I'm too old for posting pictures about proper hiking
I might manage some pics of a stroll somewhere. I think I might have hiked Devil's Kitchen when I was a lad though but not camping overnight up there. Also climbed on Idwal slabs next door.

The photo with the distressed macho guy... seems odd that there appears to be a kid with his school backpack following him.

Maybe it's a depth perception thing.

It's his gf (or mental health carer). It is depth perception but she's a lot lower that bit is a scramble with hand holds required. She did very well to keep up imo.

Nice pics Spindle, great thread idea. I'm in! Do plenty of walking both in lowland, and also (less often recently) hillwalking and mountains - lots of things planned for this year now we're out of restrictions and I'm mostly over a long term ankle injury. Got Peak District lined up for March, Dartmoor and Lakes in May, Scotland, to Cairngorms and Ardnamurchan, in early June, mostly wild camping or in the van. Well overdue! Moving jobs (back to) the Ramblers in the few weeks too. Looking to move into DofE assessment/guiding etc long-term. Qualified as a Lowland Walk Leader from Mountain Training a while back, looking to gain full ML quals in time.

Did the Haute Route about five (edit, 7! Christ!) years ago, great fun. (Well, the second bit from Arolla to Zermatt) Happy to share tips, if needed. Definitely book the huts ahead of time. The Europaweg into Zermatt is stunning. Further edit, another pic from that below. Would certainly recommend the Cicerone guidebooks by the legend sadly recently departed Kev Reynolds To view the link you have to Register or Login

Walked 18 miles in the South Downs at the weekend just gone, near Lewes.

Heading up to Snowdonia this weekend for the first time in about 12 years for a wedding, but hoping to get a few hills in, including Glyder Fach. Forecast doesn't look great.....

Future BBS walk meet prehaps? (If the cyclists can do it.....)

Is anyone on Komoot? To view the link you have to Register or Login

Two of my favourite holidays of all time were hiking holidays - six days doing the Ridgeway and a week in the Swiss Alps based in Lauterbrunnen. Both holidays accompanied by glorious views (particularly in the Alps) and endless amounts of food and alcohol.

The Ridgeway is a good one - haven't done in full yet but certain sections. Did a 50 miles part of the Mid-Wilts Way over three days last year from Hungerford to Westbury which I guess is fairly similar - beautiful chalk downlands and cute villages with nice pubs - what's not to like!

Would love to do all the National Trails at some point in one go. Not very good at starting a project in day sections then finishing (would prefer a full through walk, but time and commitments etc!) but slowly chipping away but have done the NDW, SDW and West Highland Way in full, which I did in 4 very long and tiring days in 2015.

North Downs Way is great for doing in day walk sections, as is most of the South Downs Way. Done the Thames Path (plus extension) from Erith to Pangbourne so far in stages - need to start that again at some point but will have the take the bivvy I suspect. Interesting to follow the progress of the England Coast Path - new sections opening up fairly often now. I seem to specialise sitting at a desk wanting to jack it all in again and go for a long walking - one day!

Tip for anyone, the Pembrokeshire Coast Path, which I did the northern section from St Davids last year (pic below, bit big, sorry!), is stunning and a much quieter alternative to the South West Coast Path (again, only done small sections of).

Outstanding reply. Looks like you are BBS group leader

Definitely will pick your brains on the Haute Route, I've got the Cicirone guide on order for it. There are so many there to tick off, the Tour De Monte Rosa looks great, the TMB, but really appealing is the Alta Via routes in the Dolomites, if I can get my daughter hooked she's also a climber/boulderer so I reckon we'd enjoy some of the via ferrata routes on it.

It was a good gear test after too long, I've realised that I've aged and humping 15kg is no longer reasonable. Since most of my stuff will actually be 3 season anyway I can clear a lot of weight, I bought myself a Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 this weekend, only 1.3kg so saving a couple of kg right there. If I can get under 10kg as a loaded pack I'll be happy.

What did you do for food and accomodation on the Haute Route? Wild camp or the huts? My thoughts are to wild camp with the odd (planned) hut meal. There's a lot of planning needs to go in.

I also intend to carbon offset since I can't really avoid flying, the trains are utter shite and so expensive.

Will check out Kamoot.
