The good Friday agreement (Belfast treaty) relinquished ownership decades ago. Apart from that you might have had a point if we were in the 1980s.

England isn't a political entity, with no independent form of governance, as such it cannot own territory, other than as part of the Union, which is a conglomerate of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales.
Attempts to 'own' Northern Ireland or divest ourselves of North Ireland are incredibly problematic. |

The British Government has confirmed that it won’t deliver on it's promise to Sinn Fein to introduce an Irish language act for Northern Ireland at this stage.
The promise by Brandon Lewis last year led to the restoration of the Stormont Assembly following the resignation of Arlene Foster. |

If the DUP now refuse to power share then Lewis could impose the Irish language Bill from Westminster - so it is more that he is withholding the bill temporarily to beat them with. The protocol remaining intact and a power sharing executive are priorities but eventually it will all come |

This is a very significant point. Northern Ireland as an entity was constructed with the primary purpose of enabling Unionists to rule over all other factions. So any scenario where they have to submit to any other party is an existential crisis for Unionism, hence the current attempts to bring back bombings, paramilitary actions, violence against nationalists. And the UK government is steadfastly ignoring all threats. Last edited by Del Fenner; 31-03-2022 at 09:11 AM. |

The DUP turn up, register, then bugger off. They are able to collect their wages now, without working. How can that be right?

Guy on question time in audience vehemently explaining that NI is clearly and historically part of 'Great Britain' is a great example of politics in recent times - it doesn't matter that you're wrong, if you believe it enough.

It is true that some expenses are claimed as Sinn Fein require representation in discussions e.g. peace process, stormont executive, etc but only for out of pocket expenses. No Sinn Fein MP is paid for any Westminster work. To view the link you have to Register or Login |

Do you similarly think Scotland and Wales 'belong to England'?
