West Side Story - An excellent remake, though lacking some of the energy of the original (America and the dance hall scene especially) Spielberg makes a good fist of jt. Stand out numbers being the reworking of Officer Krupke and a stunning duet.between Anita and Maria "A Boy Like That". Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler are very good as Toni and Maria and Ariana deBose is a stand out as Anita. Lovely performance from original cast member Rita Moreno as well.

One downside is Mike Faust as Riff is whiny and has no real presence.

8/10

Me and my good lady have a ten minute rule on films, sometimes applied, alas sometimes not..

In the past week or so, I've watched:

Bird Box, 7/10 very good
The Fog 6/10 bit dated now, but Adrienne Barbeau is good as the DJ

Doolittle, it didn't switch this off, but a pile of wank 1/10
Blade Runner 2049, turned off after Gosling creamed Batista N/A
Some Sherlock holmes guff with Gandalf, dull as fook, lasted 20 minutes N/A
Mortal Engines- **** a doodle do, what cobblers 2/10
Some like it hot 8/10- classic

Crashed on the sofa I accidentally watched Taking Chance today. Kevin Bacon plays a deskbound marine officer escorting home the casket of another dead marine from Iraq. Really moving, beautifully made. No glorification or schmaltz. True story and totally unexpected waterworks on a Wednesday.

The Nightingale. (18)

Not one for Sunday afternoon with the family. Thankfully I watched it on my own. Tempted to switch it off after 15 mins, but watched it to the end.

Puts taking the knee into context if historically correct.

Storm Fear(1955)
A seasonal, snowbound noir with little good cheer. Watchable enough, well acted, especially noir icon Dan Duryea. Starring and directed by Cornel Wilde, there’s a supporting role from Dennis Weaver ( aka McCloud). 6.5/10 ( YouTube)

I have to wonder what was the motivation behind this remake. It's almost a statement of disrespect on the part of Spielberg, who is giving out the message that he can do a better job than the original. Remakes are for directors who are bankrupt of new ideas, in my opinion.

Decided to exercise my brain and finally watched Primer today.
After also watching the 25 minute explainer YouTube vid afterwards I’ve concluded that it’s too clever for me. I may watch it one more time tho to see if more falls into place second time around...

No Time To Die - a bit meh a few nods to old Bond Movies. How they start with a new Bond will be interesting may be a Bobby Ewing moment

Considering some of the messaging and targets in the film, eg the media, the great US public and much more, quite an ironically funny post in some ways

Yes very good. The holocaust that was early 18thC Van Diemans land.

Read also, Robert Hughes The Fatal Shore. Read if you are of sound and open constitution. No cancel culture re details of our forebears settling of early Australia. Including our genocide of Tasmanian indigenous people’s, all dead within 60 years of colonisation.

Happy new year!
