Never knew that Millwall were called Athletic. Looking at the First Division, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs, Everton and Villa are in almost identical positions as the ones they currently occupy. The more things change.

Bit odd Grimsby in Division 3 there, everyone else was from the South.

Good spot. The new division was made up of members of the old Southern league. I doubt if Grimsby would have been in that. I assume they got relegated from the second and that made them eligible for the Third. Must have cost them a fortune in travel.

100 years on, it’s interesting to note that some clubs have fallen by the wayside, if you note that Bradford (Park Avenue) were bottom of Division One, never to return.

Leeds United were actually in their first full season, having replaced the disbanded Leeds City, who were slung out of the League (Division Two) for financial misdemeanours - Port Vale actually took over Leeds City’s fixtures in the previous 1919/20 season.

South Shields moved to Gateshead in 1930 and also changed their name to suit their new location - probably worth noting that Peterborough United replaced them in the League in 1960 after they failed to gain re-election.

Merthyr Town, who had been Palace’s first ever Football League opponents, only lasted to 1930 before being voted out.

Merthyr were replaced by the even shorter lived Thames FC, who only lasted a couple of seasons before being liquidated and they in turn were replaced by Aldershot in 1932. Aldershot were liquidated in 1990 after several years of financial crisis too.

Sadly, Bury have only recently been liquidated, clubs such as Notts County, Stockport County, who all had a proud history in the game, have been out of League football for several years.

Name changes for Rotherham County, who in 1925 merged with non-league neighbours Rotherham Town, to become Rotherham United and Clapton Orient, who in 1946 became Leyton Orient, having moved the short distance from Clapton in 1937.

Palace’s last fixture in the 1920/21 season was at Southend United. Earlier in the season, Palace supporters invaded the pitch at the Nest following a 3-2 defeat, to rough up a few Southend players that they felt had deliberately injured Palace players - the Nest at Selhurst was subsequently closed for one match, with Palace’s home game v Exeter having to be staged at Southampton.

Sadly, Southend have only just lost their place in the Football League, 100 years later, along with Grimsby, who have already ventured into the National League, Grimsby moved to the Third Division (North) which was only formed in 1921, making Palace the first ever Division Three Champions, as the Northern Section took an extra year to be constituted.

Not that surprizing. Had a decent footballing history and won the title as recently as 1960 and were runners up a couple of years later.

.
Also a name change for Swansea Town who didn't become Swansea City until the late 60's.

Interesting to see in the Non-League results under the Division 1 table in the first clip, Tufnell Park v Nunhead in the Isthmian League. Nunhead went out of business in 1949 but were based within a couple of miles of Dulwich Hamlet and not much further from Millwall presumably. I'm not sure if we ever played them.

As far as I am aware there are three occasions of the first team playing Nunhead - all away.

April 1909 Friendly won 4-2, April 1911 Friendly won 6-2, and a London Challenge Cup 1st Round October 1921 Won 4-1

The other fixture shown is Ilford v Leytonstone. These two clubs merged in 1979 and by 1988 Leytonstone & Ilford merged with Walthamstow Avenue. All three clubs were former winners of the FA Amateur Cup and the Isthmian League several times each. The new club became was renamed as Redbridge Forest who in 1992 merged with Dagenham, who were somewhat junior to Ilford, Leytonstone and Walthamstow, but had won the FA Trophy and this final merger became Dagenham & Redbridge.

That’s basically all the top East London non-league clubs all merged into one!

Charlton were very much a junior club between forming in 1905 and 1913, when, probably not by coincidence, Arsenal moved from nearby Woolwich to Highbury.

Charlton played in various junior leagues in Lewisham, Woolwich and even over the river in Barking.

They did not become a professional club until 1920 and here is an intetesting article showing what the idea was behind the move:

They played for just one season (1920/21) in the Kent League (which Palace’s Reserves had won a few years earlier), before joining the Football League in 1921, basically as a result of Palace moving up into the Second Division and Grimsby moving to the Third Division North.

Looking at the other founder member of div 3 you would have to say that we have actually overachieved compared to most
