Think he will end up abroad. Maybe America. Would have took him back in a heart beat, but then if not having him back means a new signing or two then am all for it. But don’t want to be left light in defence

Gutted if we lose him and Andros. That's another two first team players we need.

If he wants 2 years then that would be at least a £6m commitment in wages.

Yes, that's the main thing about him. But people were saying we need a senior defender in our ranks - I argue Tomkins will fill that role as well as Cahill and is prob likely to play more games (certainly over the next two years).

Even when he played last season he was (generally) nowhere near as good as the previous year. In part that might be because of the injuries and getting back up to speed, but I suspect age is now really catching up with him. I would have been happy for him to have stayed another year, but not on silly wages, and I don't think he'll be that big a miss.

In a season where we shipped an unbelievable amount of goals.

I wouldn’t be too worried. We need change.

If we could get Tomkins for for 20 games it would be an incredible upgrade on last season.

Good point - he's been a quality pro even though he hasn't played as much. Strange that he was overlooked last season but he's still only 31.

Think we have enough experience in defence, all in all.

Yep, had a few very poor games but improved as he worked his way back in I thought. Don't think he is worth 2 more years though. Certainly not on big wages.

Cahill came because Roy was here. He must also want to play, no good sat on the bench at his age. Moving somewhere to be first choice makes sense.

From the links so far, I would expect Kyle Bartley to come in from WBA if Cahill isn't staying. Would be surprised by another £15-£20m defender.

We certainly shouldn't break the bank and if Gary has a lucrative offer somewhere for his last player payout then good luck to him.

We will miss his presence and leadership in a squad of youth as we seem to be aiming for. Don't confuse age and experience with leadership though. One doesn't automatically mean you have the other.

Ward is a solid professional, great role model but not a presence like gary. Tomkins has authority as does luka etc but in terms players that just command attention Gary has that. Jimmy probably closest after but its a rare trait. With a young manager and squad it really is a big thing to have.

Don't break the bank for cahill but saying we've got other old players isn't the same as an absolute leader in the ranks. Players like that set the tone for every training session etc..

I'd love him to stay with a Marc and perhaps another youngster. Tomkins too. Ferguson, Marc, another cb and Mitchell being phased in by ward, tomkins, Gary and erm.. Mitchell

Not sure where he will end up if the 75k a week wage demand is true. Who will pay that for an experienced 35 year old with a worsening injury record?

did a great job for Palace in his time with us but we do still have Kouyate, kelly, Tomkins for experience and even I am sure Joel Ward could play at CB in an injury crisis

lets get another young centre back instead

I doubt he ends up anywhere other than the Middle East if that demand is real and he sticks to it. I saw something saying Rangers had offered £35k p/w and also said this was more than we had offered as a basic - we had more linked towards appearances. No idea if any of that is true but it feels like a realistic package for both clubs.
