Totally agree, Kavos was such a dump it was untrue. Corfu is lovely though, we hired some scooters and got to see some of it including Corfu Town.

Saw a similar event in Crete - a German kid got a massive kicking for talking to a local girl. Wankers.

Anyway, if that was the sum of my Cuba experience I'd have come away hating it, which wouldn't be at all fair of course since it had nothing to do with Cuba. But tiring of the hotel, we decided to travel by local bus to Havana (avoiding the organised trips the hotel were insistent were the only safe way to do it) and have an explore and found a lovely place to stay for a couple of nights. Of course Havana is an amazing place. We met some lovely Cubans, had a great time and came away from the whole experience thinking Cuba was a great place and all inclusive holidays were not for us.

Word of advice for those who have been to Cuba. Remember, if you then want to visit the US, you will not be able to do so using the ESTA scheme, you have to apply for a visa

Only if you've been to Cuba since Jan 2021.

The visa process (for me this year at least) was a nightmare. As bad as the India visa debacle I had to go through last year. For both, getting an actual appointment is the hardest bit. The appointment wait was around 90 days for my US one.

Was that away from the coast? Still a huge amount of anti German post war resentment/bad feeling about inland. There were terrible atrocities and a lot of families have long memories

I don’t condone violence or aggression generally, but I think the traditions, experiences and history of Crete and it’s population perhaps are beyond the bounds of most Western European, by that I mean not eastern Mediterranean island peoples, comprehension.

So, not sure, batting off a whole peoples - ‘wankers’ - over one incident with, I suspect not one iota of knowledge of Crete (‘Malians’ ’ innit)

I won’t bore with details but do try empathy - not condoning or agreeing or sympathising - but an empathetic and fairly well read knowledge of the Ionian islands, Peloponnese, and the major Hellenic islands.

As a word salad to get a flavour, Crete and it’s life now and in the past, is kinda beyond say, commuting, Dorking, Oyster cards, two for one in the supermarket, accountancy, pubs, cheese balls, telly, individualism, getting away from the family, lager, salaries, mundanities, damp, clouds, grey, passive, repressed.

To help, here are some key words:-

Peasants
Machismo, but…
Matriarchal
Shotguns
Corruption
Tradition
Government oppression
Poverty
Island ways
Germany
Tragedy
Colour
Family
Babies
Loudness
Emotion
Life

And a parting phrase that’s not a word - 1000s years of civilisations rise and fall, whilst ahem elsewhere people lived in mud huts and painted their faces with mud

We were in a small village called Zaros some years ago.
Stopped in a local restaurant for lunch. The place had long trestle tables. Fella came up with our order and that of a German couple at the other end. Ours served politely, theirs bounced down the table with a gruff " enjoy your lunch".

Around 1990 family holidays in the South of France many French still hated the Germans,( didn't help that they were still denying the holocaust) one Scottish family kept getting treated like dirt as the French thought their accent was German.
